Tonys does fantastic work at reasonable prices. Will always recommend them

Didn't Finish the job and what was done was poor workmanship and I had to pay in full to get it back
I got an estimate to do a complete paint job on my 1984 C10 p/u truck. I brought it in on 4/16/2018 and as per contract to be completed by 4/30/2018. I supplied all new door& window rubbers back bupper tail lights window parts bolts and then some. The first week it sat and noting was done. They started taking the truck apart and not much else was done. The Third week some pink primer was applied and put outside. I asked Allen P the Manager how things were going he said he was running behind. I told him that I wasn't rushing him.Latter that week I saw that they painted the new tail gate and it had specks in it. The Painter told me that his helper done it out side the spray booth and he would redo it. I asked Allen what was the schedule, He said that the next week was going to be sunny and he was going to have the whole crew on it. I stopped in that week and only some of the body was paineted and was peeling were they had put tape on the new paint. What I saw was they didn't prep the body at all. I questioned them and they said they did. This dragged on. Now I'm concerned. Allien had told me the guy that took the truck apart was fired and they were not sure how to put it back together. I suggested to Allen that I had the Supplier book with diagrams and I would bring it in and I did but it still dragged on. I saw it was going the wrong way with bad paint job and nobody was helping to finish it. There's more to the story.Bottom line I was told to pick up my truck unfinished and I had to pay for it in full $4558.00 and I did on May 25 2018. I took it home in parts. I put some of the parts on it but found that it had two colors. I Contacted *** and explained the problems and after that he said that I got a good paint job and I should be happy with that and he wasn't going to repaint it. So I took it to *** cars to see what he can do to finish it. He said to repaint it he would have to strip it down due to not prepped correctly. The dash - back bupper - right door - tail gate - steering column windows all had to be removed and installed correctly and buff out the paint on the whole truck. I have spent $1700 so far and he still has some touch ups to do.

Desired Outcome

I feel that Tony's Collision Center should pay me for the Extra work that needed to be done to finish it as per there Contract. It should fall between $2000 to $2500

Defiore Enterprises Response • Jul 23, 2018

See Attached:

This is a response from Allen P Shop Manager @ Tony's Collision Center.

As per the complaint from Mr., we completed the job per the estimate as stated on the
original quote. Mr. did in fact order new rubber window gaskets and moldings, but I never
indicated that I would install them per the estimate. As a good gesture I did have my technicians
attempt to install, but seeing how the molding and gaskets were new and my technicians were
pressed for time by Mr., I informed them to just work on what we were getting paid to do per
the estimate. If time allowed, we could try to install the other parts that Mr. had requested to
be installed beyond the written estimate. I spoke with Mr. and informed him that the job was
taking longer than had been anticipated. He was ok with that at the time. However, due to Mr.
*** constant presence and verbal disruptions my technicians refused to work with or around
him. He consistently would come to the shop and enter the Employee-only designated work areas
to attempt to oversee the job. After this, at one point Mr. did request if he could lend a hand
to speed up the reassembly process, and reluctantly I agreed. Shortly after that brief period my
technicians once again came to me and told me that it was difcult to get anything accomplished
with Mr. standing over them and questioning their work. He used offensive and abrasive
language with my staff, and he was there as our guest. He also continued to critique work that my
professional, trained technicians were in the process of completing, and Mr. is not a trained
collision expert. I feel as a manager that it is my duty to work with my customers and to convey to
them the repair process, which I made every effort to do with Mr. In closing, I feel that Mr.
*** is trying his best to paint myself and our collision shop unjustly in a poor light. Mr.
also knew going into this that we are not a restoration shop, we are a collision shop. I had this
conversation with him
when he brought his vehicle in for the estimate. Simply put, we repair vehicles; we do not restore
them. Restoration, which is now what Mr. is claiming he was looking for with this job, was
not the contract, as this is a timely procedure which requires more work than was in the written
and agreed upon in the estimate. As for the time frame that it took us to complete his vehicle, he
told me several times that he was in no hurry. I did inform him thatl had several large time-
consuming jobs ahead of his, and he said he understood. Part of the reason that this job took
longer was because Mr. supplied all parts for this repair. Our shop did not order any parts.
Unfortunately, some of the parts he supplied did not t correctly or were missing essential
components to allow the job to move forward quickly. The job ended when Mr. continued to
add more requests to the job, including wheel work. We went ahead and did the extra work,
without adding any extra time or labor charges to the estimate. We did this in good faith because
thejob had taken longer than we had originally quoted. Shortly thereafter, Mr. came to the
shop and demanded that his vehicle be worked on immediately. A few hours later, he called and
became verbally offensive on the phone with me as I tried to explain what was left to nish on the
job (all of which were extra add-ons and not part of the estimate). After trying to resolve the issue
and being berated and attacked verbally throughout the conversation, I informed Mr. that,
'
because we had completed all work that was in the original contract, I would need him to come
and pick up his vehicle - and submit payment in full.

Customer Response • Jul 27, 2018

(The consumer indicated he/she DID NOT accept the response from the business.)
The parts I ordered were to replace the old parts that they took off to do the paint job and should have been put back on. The company I ordered these parts from, specializes in truck parts and comes with new screws, nuts and bolts. It was a good thing, because the old parts and screws were all put together in boxes throughout the shop. It should have made it easier to reinstall. I would come in one or two times a week and went to Allen's office. Then he would walk me around the shop to show me the progress on my truck. I would be there 10-15 minutes. There were times Allen was not in the shop and I would go into the shop looking for him. He never told me to stay out of the shop except the last day when I was picking up the truck. Yes, I did ask questions mostly when I saw things that didn't look right. No, I'm not trained to work in a body shop but, I have done body work on Model T's and I just painted some parts for my 1925 T bucket with the same paint and color.
When I first brought the truck to get a price, Allen shared with me that he was going to team up with *** to start doing more older cars. He never told me that they were a collision shop, not a restoration shop. If you look at the pictures attached, you will see the truck was in great shape with the original paint and I was looking for a complete paint job not a restoration. The interior was going to be done elsewhere and Allen had told me that his shop had a big job in front of me and he would have it done before I brought my truck in at the date he gave me. Yes he did have the tires mounted which was not part of the contract, but when they were trying to put the windows in, one of the wing windows broke. Allen called me to see if I would order a new one in clear and have it shipped as soon as possible and he would pay for it. I did, at $92.70 and never got credit. It was also the wrong color. It should have been green tint and I had to buy the right one for $39.95, after I got the truck back. I think we should call that a wash. As far as the missing parts, this is false. The only parts missing was the tailgate bolts and the young man trying to put the truck together, had told me that he used those bolts to put the doors on cause he couldn't find the old ones. Yes I volunteered to come in and help. I was asked by Allen on the last week, if I would come in and I did for a few hours. I installed the wheel well trim and cleaned the motor compartment. It was the young man and myself. There was no harsh words. I bought him lunch and he had told me he lived with his mother and the well pump went out. I found a pump guy for half the price he was quoted and I offered to loan him $950.00 so they can have running water again. Also, I gave him the old bumper off my truck.
That last week, Allen told me he was going to finish the truck. I came in that Friday morning, A.M. Allen, along with the young man, were trying to put the windows in and having problems. I went to the auto parts and hardware to find bolts for the tailgate. When I got back, no one was working on the truck. I asked the young man because he was working on another car. Yes, Allen is correct. I lost it and I wish I could take it back. I'm sorry for that.
This truck was supposed to be a fun project. Unfortunately, it hasn't been. I'm 66 years old and can't take this pressure. I do feel good that the company finishing the truck is doing a great job. So in closing, I need to move forward. To do so, I would like to close this case. Thanks
