[redacted] presented to our hospital on 2/17/18 with her kitty Precious who had been losing weight. She previously had been a client of [redacted] Hospital, but left because “they had misdiagnosed one of her animals” according to the client. We performed basic blood work to determine if a...

medical cause for the weight loss could be determined. Blood work showed an over active thyroid. Hyperthyroidism in cats causes weight loss. In the case of Precious, it was thought that she had atypical hyperthyroidism which occurs in 5% of cats due to her poor appetite. Mrs [redacted] was concerned about Precious' teeth, but the client was told that a dental procedure would require that the thyroid be controlled before anesthesia. An information packet on hyperthyroidism was given to the client and important sections regarding treatment and potential side effects were highlighted. Precious was started on a medication called [redacted] and ordered in a transdermal preparation as the client was unable to give pills. The client was told to recheck the thyroid level in 1 month to see if the level had normalized. The client was asked to weigh Precious weekly and report any continued weight loss. Precious was last seen at our office on 3/9/18 and a recheck of her weight showed a weight gain of half a pound. The teeth were examined and it was determined to wait on teeth cleaning due to no obvious problems at that time and to a concern over anesthesia unless absolutely necessary. Mrs [redacted] requested a second opinion and our office always encourages second opinions. Blood testing at [redacted] Hospital on 3/31/18 showed a normal thyroid level as a result of [redacted] treatment. The money that Mrs [redacted] spent at our hospital was for determining a cause for weight loss and result in subsequent resolution of that problem. As a dental procedure would not be able to be done until thyroid stabilization, Mrs [redacted] has not spent any money on her cat that was not necessary. An apology was not given as there is nothing to apologize for. As our hospital values the welfare of pets over money, I am gladly refunding Mrs [redacted]'s request. I hope it will help Precious, as to date, she is still not right after seeing two other veterinary offices.
