Be careful when dealing with Dental Grants of Canada.
They promise you more than 20% off your dental charge, but "forget" to mention that it does not apply to lab. treatment. Even though they have given me a quote IN WRITING which does also cover lab fees. When the dentist told me that Dental Grants will NOT cover anything related to lab fee I tried to contact Dental Grants Canada, but they have never returned my calls or messages ever since.

My conclusion is that they are far from being transparent and don't care that much about their potential customers.

I was very excited at first to hear that I would have some financial help with my dental situation. I received numerous texts and email reminding me of my appoint. I thought this was very strange but I left it at that. Then when I arrived at my appointment, no one was there to meet me from Dental Grants of Canada so I continued on with my appoint. The dentist appeared to be pleasant enough at first but my thoughts soon changed. He completely criticized my dentist as well and the other dentist who gave me a quote. I was shocked that the would speak of his colleges in this way.
After a time of him starring at my x-rays, he then informed me to go to the desk while he worked on a plan.
The plan he came up with was 16 thousand dollars and was not what I had discussed with him.
Then finally someone named Vivian came over and introduced herself. Vivian from Canadian Dental Grants has her office right in the dentists office. I feel this is a *** and the grant they give you is already fixed in the price. Very disappointed that I got taken in this way. I still had to pay a consult fee to the dentist ..Dentistry on 7th..Dr ***. Every other dentist I have contacted does not charge a consult fee. They also suggested I go for a cat scan for 300 dollars so they could better evaluate my teeth!!
***. No one once mentioned to me that CDG had their office in the same office as the dentist they recommended.

Dental Grants Of Canada Response • Oct 09, 2019

Dear Jennifer,

We are here to advocate for you and will do our best to address your concerns as follows:

Unfortunately, we were not present with you and the dentist during your examination so cannot comment on what the dentist said about any other dentist; however, those kinds of concerns are best addressed in a private forum as there may be confidential reasons for the dentist's comments.

I must assure you that we do not share space with any dentist in our program. (there are over 70) Conversely, each dentist permits us to use a consultation room so we can speak with you in confidence to discuss your treatment plan and the amount of your grant. Naturally, nobody would like us to discuss their personal matters in the public reception area. We appreciate that the dentist makes his consultation room available to us, but it is just for the day when we are there to meet with applicants like you in order to review treatment plans and allocate grants.

The amount of the dental grant percentage is always known in advance, (up front) and dentists do not inflate their fees in order to 'absorb the grant'. The grant component is a true savings and is deducted from the cost of the treatment plan. Perhaps you thought that the cost of the treatment plan given by the dentist already included the grant reduction, however it probably did not. Either way, we assure you that the quote for the fees set out in your treatment plan must be within the guidelines set out by the Ontario Fee Guide. To that end, we would be happy to review each fee item and show you the corresponding fee code in the Ontario Fee Guide. You are also more than welcome to get a competing quote from 2 other dentists for the exact same kind of work. We will review the quotes and make sure that you only pay the lowest amount. (And then of course we will deduct the grant percentage to make it even lower thereby providing you with the outcome you were expecting).

You are correct in saying that most dentists provide a free 'consultation', however you received an 'exam' which likely also included x-rays. Exams are not consultations (they are exams) which are needed in order for the dentist to provide a treatment plan. (A dentist cannot provide a treatment plan without an exam and x-rays in order to know the health of your mouth) If the dentist required a cat scan, then it is likely that your exam or x-rays showed that you may not have enough bone tissue to support the kind of dental work you are contemplating and therefore further analysis is needed. The cat scan is done at a different location and the cost of the cat scan goes to the lab and not us or the dentist.

We hope this addresses some of your concerns and would like to hear back from you when you have competing quotes from other dentists of your choosing. We'd truly like to have the opportunity to dispel any misconceptions you may have and of course, to help you achieve the smile you want at a genuinely lower cost.

Please reach out to us at your earliest convenience so we can help you: ***@dentalgrants.org

Thank you
