The patient was scheduled to see one of our physicians as a new patient.  He had numerous skin tags that he wanted removed.  The physician informed him that removal of skin tags is considered cosmetic by insurance companies and is not covered.  If he wanted them removed, it would be...

an out of pocket expense.  The patient declined and was charged for a new patient encounter.  This was an appointment time that was in the doctors schedule and he was seen and diagnosed.  I attempted to explain that to the patient when he called, but he was unhappy with my explanation.  He had signed forms stating that he would be responsible for all charges regardless of insurance coverage.  We always try our best to provide our patients with the best possible care.

Complaint: [redacted]I am rejecting this response because:
Just as I tried to explain before, when I called to make an appointment, it was to have the skin tags removed. This had nothing to do with insurance coverage. If I were told (when I called to make the appointment), that no procedure was going to be performed on the first visit, and that visit was only for me to talk with a Dr., I would have a choice. No one informed me that no procedure was going to be performed. I am not happy because I feel that as a consumer, I should have been informed of this. When I spoke with the office manager, I explained this to her. I has nothing to do with the insurance, but everything to do with being informed. This is good practice to inform your customers.
I found out that no procedure was going to be performed when I was sitting in front of the Dr., and I removed my shirt. The Dr. looked at it, and told me I had several skin tags. Than told me to put my shirt back on and make another appointment. Then I get an invoice for $125.00.
Imagine this - you take your car to the tire shop because you have a flat tire. The person looks at your time, tells you it is flat, then charge you $125.00. The same principle is true in this case. If the person tells you ahead of time of the charge to just look at your tire, you have a choice. In my case, the choice was not given to me because by the time I found out of the charge, it was too late. This is not good business!
Sincerely,[redacted]
