Desert Jewel Gypsy Horses Reviews (4)

I was a headache for them, always late on my payments etc they sold me my horse at about a month old on payments until weaning I was late by months at one point which gave them every right to resell him, but they didn't even though once he got a little older people were really interested and they could have aol him for more than I got him Instead they worked with me to get caught up I recived my gypsy from them and he was very sweet due to the attention and great care they gave as a baby We love our guy and if I could I would buy another from them in the future

Woman who does all the customer interaction is very rude. I purchased a horse from them that was supposed to be register able and the Dam was not registered! Still trying to get a hair sample of the dam from the new owner since Desert Jewel sold her. Hopefully I will be able to register my horse I paid $7k for.

+1

I purchased a Gypsy Horse from Desert Jewel in 2007. She is a wonderful, great quality mare and DJ met all my expectations. The mare came with a free breeding with the DJ stud of my choice, which I did use -- no problems and had a beautiful healthy foal.

Just as a comment, registration of Gypsies is a whole different thing from the registration process with other breeds of horses. This is because until the 1990's, these horses weren't even in the US -- they were bred by true Gypsies living in the United Kingdom. There was no registry there, either -- they kept the pedigrees in their head! They named their horses names such as "Grandfather" or "Bob's Mare". Look at the history of these horses and you will see. There was no UK registry for Gypsy Horses until the last few years when the Gypsy breeders started selling them for big bucks and US buyers wanted a "registered" horse.

When Gypsy Horses started being imported to the US, several people started up their own Gypsy registries and there was a lot of bickering about which was the "real" registry. (One of the big registries was started by the Gypsy Gold Farm, which was one of the first to import and sell in the US.) A lot of the early Gypsy Horse owners didn't think it was right for the major seller of Gypsy Horses also ran the registry. Other registries were started up. Many early Gypsy Horse buyers decided to stay out of the fray and didn't pick any registry. And NONE of the horses imported to the US were registered when they got here.

Desert Jewel was one of the earlier importers of the breed. All I can say is people need to understand about registration for Gypsy Horses. If you don't get registration papers when you buy it (and most people who have had these horses for a while didn't), you can send hair in the one of the big equine genetics labs and get the info to register them. So if Desert Jewel said it was registerable, then I'm sure it is. I just hate seeing a good company get a bad name for this issue.
