Review: I contracted Designer doors on May *, 2013 to design and install a custom made door to replace the existing front door on my four family dwelling at [redacted] in Brooklyn. The existing door was measured by the [redacted], who stated he could make a replacement steel door with a lighter but stronger steel. He stated he would have to get it made oversea because steel door craftsmanship was no longer readily available in the U.S. , which meant he would need 75-90 days between contract and delivery. I signed a contract for a custom steel door at $5,988 and I paid $2,996 upon the contract signing. The door was not installed within 90 days as agreed because the owner kept reporting shipping delays. I was not notified of the door arrival until 7 months after I signed the contract and it was not installed in March *, 2014.
After the installation, I notice that the door did not get installed in the same location of the removed door. It was installed 5 inches forward of the removed door and encroached the first landing step making a short (7") unsafe step/landing before the entry door. This new placement of the door created a unsightly interior doorway that was capped with wood trim to extend the door jam. Another thing I noticed was he installed a locking system that required a key to exit the door. Meaning anyone that did not have a key could not exiting the premises. I immediately called him to complain. He was argumentative but promised to have the lock changed in a few days. Since that time he resisted changing the locking system because of one imaged reason or the other. In the meantime I have to leave the front door open at all times to ensure tenant safety in case emergency egress is necessary.
Designer Doors did send a repairmen to cut the steel saddle down to alleviate the encroachment on the first step/landing outside the door. The cutting of the steel saddle damaged (saw holes) the bottom of the steel door frame.Desired Settlement: Refund of all monies and compensation to have the door removed.
