Dillon's Mobile Repair Reviews (1)

Review: My truck was not running well. I took it to [redacted]'s Auto Repair and told the owner, [redacted], do not do any repair without authorization first. Being a good mechanic, [redacted] knew what was wrong just by trying to start my truck. I left my truck to be repaired. While going to work the next day I stopped by the shop to see how it was going. [redacted] explained it was my timing and that he did some extra diagnostic work because, "that is how I am". [redacted] explained that he would not charge me for the extra work he performed and I agreed. Later that day I got a call from [redacted] telling me my truck was done. Not only did [redacted] change his mind and charge me $100 dollars more than he quoted me because he needs to "recoup some of his time", he also told me that my muffler was "blown-up". I told [redacted] that my muffler was fine when I dropped my truck off and that I was a bit confused. We didn't discuss it any further. [redacted] also told me that he notices I needed a new water pump. I told him that I did not want him to perform the work. That ended the conversation. The next day I went to pick up my truck. Sure enough the muffler was blown wide open. I went and paid my bill in full in hopes to have a clean break. [redacted]'s Auto Repair is new in our small community and I thought I would give [redacted] honest feedback to help him strengthen his future business. First and foremost I told [redacted] that he went above and beyond as a mechanic. I then told him that, as a businessman, he made a bad call. I told him that performing work without my authorization, then charging me for it was not okay. I could no longer bring my vehicles to him for repair. [redacted] seemed to handle my criticism well at first. As he processed my invoice he seemed to become more and more agitated. [redacted] went as far as to say he no longer wanted my business. We finished our business and I left. When I started my truck it confirmed my suspicions. The damage to my muffler happened at [redacted]'s. I called the next morning to tell him so.Desired Settlement: I would like [redacted]'s Auto Repair to pay for the replacement cost of the muffler.

Response:

[redacted]'s Auto Repair ###-###-#### Thank you for the opportunity to address the complaint of Mr. [redacted] tha-was-assigned # [redacted]. In mid Feb. Mr. [redacted] drove in his 1994 Chevy 1(.1500 Pickup truck with a severe engine misfire, barely running. Mr. [redacted] requested a diagnosis of the problem. The various components of the diagnostic process are as follows: 1. Pressure and delivery volume of the fuel system. 2. Timing component test and distributor function. 3. Visual observation of valve train components and rocker arms. Item 3 is required to verify that a sticking valve is not a factor in the run problem as the vehicle was backfiring into the intake and exhaust severely. In addition, the vehicle needs to be operated or at least "turned over" to complete the diagnostic process. During the exploratory work performed I became aware the valve cover gaskets had failed, in the :Rs assembly process. In mr..ny roces the valve cover gaskets (which are made of rubber) will be suitable for reassembly. However, under normal wear and tear the gasket can fail. At the discretion of the technician, the gaskets may get replaced. Mr [redacted]s vehicle needed valve cover gaskets as they were leaking due to being completely severed. Per Mr. [redacted]s Request they were saved. It is note worthy, that only after the repair was made, was I able to observe the vehicles exhaust, sound volume level. It is not unusual for a customer to hear sound changes that the technician doesn't observe. It came to my attention that the truck had an exhaust/muffler problem. It was evident that a backfire had caused the muffler to fail. Mufflers are not manufactured with the expectation that they will last the life of the vehicle. Many factors effect the longevity of a muffler, including muffler age, product quality, vehicle application (i.e. 4wd), and driving habits of the operator. Normal usage make a muffler subject to failure. It seems evident that between the time that Mr. [redacted]'s cross fire situation started and the time the repair was completed, the vehicle suffered a back fire that caused the muffler to fail. This failure does not, in my opinion, constitute negligence on behalf of my repair facility. Rather, it is a symptom of the mechanical problem the vehicle came in with. I cannot say if the muffler failure occun-ed when the vehicle was being diagnosed for the run problem. All repair facilities use certain criteria to determine what vehicles will be received to repair. Many factors such as work load, year make and model of vehicle, the experience of the technicians available at the time, even customer loyalty are factored in when scheduling repairs. Every effort was made to hold down the cost of Mr. [redacted]'s repair. A traditional phone call was made to Mr. [redacted] to inform him of the recommended repairs. During this conversation with [redacted] gave the authorization to complete the repair. In Mr.[redacted]'s opening statements he makes the erroneous assumption that the diagnosis was compiled,"just by trying to start my truck". Furthermore, what Mr.[redacted] perceived as agitation was actually reluctant resolve that Mr.[redacted]'s vehicles would no longer be considered for future repairs. It is with reluctance that I feel duty bound, as the owner, to tell people immediately when this decision has been determined. Simply stated, Mr. [redacted] did not grasp how much effort was extended on his behalf At no time did Mr. [redacted] request that my facility should pay for his muffler, prior to this time. The itemized total on Mt [redacted]'s bill reflects Two Hours labor charged. One is for a repair of the valve cover gaskets that had to be replaced because of gasket failure. The other is for installing a replacement distributor and setting ignition timing to spec. My regret in this situation is that I didn't ascertain the proper verb-age to convey to Mr.[redacted] that the repair took much longer then what was charged. What I charged for was only the labor rates for the repairs required, not the time spent on the job. As for the request for my shop to pay for the muffler: respectfully denied.
