Review: KWH rate in December was $0.098900, just got bill for January KWH rate is now $0.219000 this is a 120% increase. Called Discount Power, automated message stating that due to higher cost of natural gas prices you will see a increase cost in your rate. Stayed on phone, [redacted] got on phone. I explained to her the above and all she said was that natural gas prices went up. I said 120%, she responded she didn't know so I asked to speak to someone else and thank you for your time. I got an answering machine to [redacted], I left a message to call me back.No response yet!Desired Settlement: Reduce the KWH rate and provide a credit on my currant statement!

While we cannot promise savings versus the utility company every single month, Discount Power’s goal is to show a savings versus the utility over a period of time. Mr. [redacted] enrolled in January 2013, and Discount Power became his supplier effective that same month. As the Discount Power Terms and Conditions of Electric Service explain, when a customer has a variable rate plan, the variable rate can fluctuate based on changes in the wholesale power market. We understand the frustration with the recent increase in the variable rate. Unfortunately, due to unusually high wholesale costs this winter, our variable rate did increase, as the rates are based on current market conditions. The fluctuations of the wholesale power market can affect suppliers differently, contributing to the variance in rates from one supplier to another. Our current rates are available each month through the Connecticut Public Utilities Regulatory Authority website ([redacted]) so that our customers can stay up-to-date on our rates and how they compare to other suppliers, at their own convenience. Mr. [redacted]’s service through Discount Power ended effective January 13, 2014. Mr. [redacted] was contacted on March 6, 2014 and spoke with a Customer Care Representative who offered to re-rate Mr. [redacted]’s supply charge for his December 11, 2013 – January 13, 2014 billing cycle for which his utility company, [redacted], reported 3,849kWh of usage. This resulted in a refund offer of $130.87. As there is no way for Discount Power to provide a credit on a consolidated utility bill, as Mr. [redacted] requested in his complaint, this refund is being issued via check. As of March 7, 2014 this refund is being processed and a check will be issued to Mr. [redacted] as soon as possible.

Review: I have been a customer of Discount Power for a year and was signed up to a fixed rate of around 8.59 cents per kWh. In my most recent bill this rate doubled to .219 cents per kWh which is over an 100% increase. This increased my bill an enormous amount and called several companies involved to resolve this issue. [redacted] told me that this rate is not normal and should be further investigated. Upon calling Discount Power I was unable to get through to a person to talk to and I will be trying again tomorrow. I have already called several times with no response. With a fixed rate this kind of fluctuation should not occur. Even if I had a variable rate, this increase is absurd and also came without any notification from the company. It does not match the price advertised online and does not match what I agreed to pay in a fixed rate.Desired Settlement: Discount Power needs to refund the difference in price immediately and revise the current rate of .219 cents/kWh as it is unreasonable and not what I agreed to pay when I signed up with Discount Power.

This complaint was in reference to an account under the name [redacted]; Discount Power also received a complaint from Mr. [redacted]. Please see the response to Mr. [redacted] below. In addition, when drafting Mr. [redacted]'s complaint we neglected to address his statement that he attempted to contact Discount Power several times, and as Ms. [redacted] referenced the same issue, we have included a response to that below. We hope that Ms. [redacted] will share our apologies regarding that issue with Mr. [redacted]. While we cannot promise savings versus the utility company every single month, Discount Power’s goal is to show a savings versus the utility over a period of time. Mr. [redacted] enrolled in September 2011, and Discount Power became his supplier effective that same month. The fluctuations of the wholesale power market can affect suppliers differently, contributing to the variance in rates from one supplier to anothis. Our current rates are available each month through the Connecticut Public Utilities Regulatory Authority website ([redacted]) so that our customers can stay up-to-date on our rates and how they compare to othis suppliers, at their own convenience. We sincerely apologize for the difficulty Mr. [redacted] and Ms. [redacted] had in reaching a Customer Service Representative when they attempted to contact us. There was one particular day when our phone lines were down due to a power outage in our office complex, and as the outage was unexpected, we were not able to implement a pre-recorded message advising of this issue. Due to the increase in our variable rate, we also experienced an extremely high call volume at certain points this winter, which did result in exorbitant hold times for some customers. We did the best that we could to get to every caller as quickly as possible. Discount Power received a drop request from Mr. [redacted]’s utility company, [redacted], which advised that his service through Discount Power would end effective February 14, 2014. Mr. [redacted] was contacted on March 7, 2014 and spoke with a Customer Care Representative who offered to re-rate Mr. [redacted]’s supply charge for his December 13, 2013 – January 15, 2014 billing cycle. This resulted in a refund offer of $57.57 to be issued via mailed check. As of March 7, 2014 this refund is being processed and a check will be mailed to Mr. [redacted] as soon as possible.

Review: Discount Power offered me a Generation Service Charge of $.0795for the month of December 2013 with no contract. The next month they charged me $.1999 which is more than 2-1/12 time the original rate. This was a bate and switch advertising tactic on their part. I can get the .0795 rate from a number of suppliers and on a fix term contract. This is not appropiate.Desired Settlement: I would like a credit for the excess they charged over the original rate.

While we cannot promise savings versus the utility company every single month, Discount Power’s goal is to show a savings versus the utility over a period of time. I have reviewed the response made by the business in reference to complaint ID [redacted], and find that this resolution is the best that I could do, but far from what what I expected.

Sincerely,

Review: I have been with this company since 2010 with no apparent issues with pricing. However, I received a bill today for one month's electricity which climbed from $.0989 per KWH to $.219 per KWH. This is outrageous and feel the company should rectify the situation by a refund. When I received my bill today, I immediately checked the [redacted] website which stated that the current rate for Discount Power was $.0899. How can this company advertise such a low rate and charge a long time customer this outrageous rate? I am sick over this and am sure many others have experienced the same action by this company.Desired Settlement: I want to be reimbursed for the difference between the $.899 advertised price and the price charged of $.219 for 719 KWH. I calculate it to be $92.82.

This customer was on Discount Power's variable rate, and due to the high wholesale rates this winter, Discount Power's variable rates increased. The rate that the customer noticed online was an introductory rate for new customers only, and given the timing of when a new customer would have started flowing with DPI, they would start flowing in a month that has a wholesale cost lower than that of January. This customer has been with DPI since 2010, and unfortunately we did have to dramatically increase our prices to cover the extreme wholesale costs this winter, but this clearly states that this is the first time this has occurred.

Review: Earlier this year 2015 I was misled by Discount Power (to whom I never gave my telephone number or permission to call me) who assured me they were working on behalf of [redacted] in lowering my rate of electricity supplied that will be increasing to 15.04cents and in order for me to decrease that rate I would have to agree with by joining a State energy savings program with a generation charge of a fixed rate of 13.5cents. I am now finding out that this company has no affiliation with [redacted] at all and I am being charged 3.5cents more by them than what [redacted] is charging now. I am appaled at how they lied and tricked me into believing that I was making a savings and now my electrictiy bill has doubled due to the untruth that Discount Power has delevired. I was assured by Discount Power that 1) I would get a $100.00 sign on certificate which I have not received as of today, 2)that this is a free program with no fees yet they are now telling me I have to pay $200.00 to cancel their services which I am not financially able to pay. 3)I was told to cancel before 1year would be $100.00 or free after six months if I call tor recalculate the rate.Desired Settlement: I would like to discontinue use of services with Discount Power with no charges for cancelling the agreement. Due to the fact that 1) they are NOT cheaper than [redacted], 2) I was manipulated by them into and agreement that is not what they said.

Revdex.com, Attached please find the Welcome Letters and the independent Third Party Verification ("TPV") recording of Ms. [redacted] agreeing to enroll with Discount Power, Inc. ("DPI") on 2/23/2015. She enrolled for 12 months at a rate of $0.135 kWh with a $100 early termination fee if terminated prior to the end of the term but after the rescission period. The [redacted] rate at the time was $0.1497 kWh plus distribution charges, etc. She was mailed a copy of her Terms of Service, her Disclosure Label and her Welcome Letters all clearly confirming what had been told to her by the telemarketer for her review and reference and yet she chose not to rescind her enrollment but to enjoy the rate that was lower than the Utility company until this past month, when she noticed the [redacted] rates in ** dropped below DPI's. Coincidence...? The fact is the customer chose to complain because she would now like to receive the lower [redacted] rate after agreeing to a 12 month term for which DPI has already purchased the electricity and would not be able to recoup its expenditure without the early termination fee of $100 (not $200 as the customer states in the complaint). As to the customer's contention that she did not receive her $100 dining certificate, the Welcome Letters (attached) clearly state that the customer must go to [redacted] in order to receive the certificate, which according to our records, the customer has not done. DPI will waive the early termination fee for this customer despite not being required to do so. Discount Power, Inc.

Review: WE were contacted by telephone with an offer by Discount Power inc to reduce our generation rate. The service began with a lower generation rate ,that moved up to a rate much higher than the original offer. It climed From around 7.50 to 15.52.c/k Wh This is more than double of their original offer. I consider this a deceptive business practice that should be abolished.Desired Settlement: We feel the company should compensate it customers for the difference between the original offer and the rates that were charged without notifying us of the increase. To make matters worst it can take up to two billing cycles to opt out of their service. There is no reason the service can not be canceled within one month at the most.We live in a world of immediate electronic communication. No one should have to accept a promise of saving and then getting a bill for double the original quote.

Third party suppliers, like Discount Power, do not have control over when a customer’s service begins or ends; this is determined by the customer’s utility company. Discount Power issued notification to Mr. [redacted]’s utility company, [redacted], immediately upon receiving this request from Mr. [redacted], as is policy. Mr. [redacted]’s utility company then determines what date that drop can become effective. Discount Power was notified by [redacted] that Mr. [redacted]’s service through Discount Power would end effective at the end of the billing cycle that was underway, January 17, 2014. Mr. [redacted]’s variable rate for his first two months of Discount Power was 0.0699. Following those two billing cycles, rates in the wholesale energy market began to increase, and his rate fluctuated between 0.0850 and 0.0999 for his next nine billing cycles. Mr. [redacted]’s variable rate, as a result of the drastic increase in wholesale energy market costs, did increase further for his last two billing cycles with Discount Power as his supplier. However, Mr. [redacted]’s rates for both of those billing cycles were below Discount Power’s cost for that supply. As a result, Discount Power is unfortunately not able to offer Mr. [redacted] a refund for this usage.

Thank you for the opportunity to respond. The Auddinos have been customers of Discount Power, Inc. ("DPI") since 2010 and have enjoyed ratesl below the utility during that period. DPI issued check number 5935 on 2/19/15 for $61.86 for an inadvertent rate change, immediately refunding the customer back to the $.0995 kWh rate. Mrs. Auddino called several times about the check not having been received prior to 2/19/15, and she was told, each time, checks are issued once a month and that her patience was greatly appreciated. On 2/27/15, the customer called saying she still did not receive the check. On 3/4/15, DPI issued a second check at the customers request. Upon receipt of the second check, the customer acknowledged that the first check dated 2/19/15 had already been received and that DPI should cancel the second check. The weather during that period may have played a part in the delay since postal personnel had difficulty delivering because of record snowfall; however, DPI is happy to state that the $61.86 is safely in the [redacted] account and that the [redacted] still receive their electric supply from DPI as of this date. Review: I contacted Discount Power on February 7,2014 because I wanted to switch my supplier back to [redacted]. My rate had gone up to $0.159900. I had to speak to a man,[redacted], because I was a member of [redacted] and he handled anyone who was in a credit union. He said they could not switch back until another reading was done, so it would be the billing the end of March. He also told me he would switch my rate back down to the initial rate for now. When I received my bill in the beginning of March, my rate was not reduced. I called to talk to [redacted], but they said he was off. I spoke to another gentleman and he said that it was all set, I would be switched back to [redacted] with my next bill. I received my bill today and it is still showing Discount Power as my supplier. They are very difficult to get a hold of on the phone. When I tried in the past they were closed before their stated time of 5pm. I am going to try writing a letter to tell them I want to be switched back to [redacted] and also complain to my credit union who had sent out letters recommending them. Any assistance you can give me will be much appreciated. Thank you. [redacted]Desired Settlement: Help me get my electric supplier back to [redacted].

Subject: Regarding complaint # [redacted]

My complaint against Direct Power has been resolved. I received a phone message, as well as an e-mail from them that they contacted [redacted] and changed my provider to them and credited my account for the change in rate they had promised me. I received a corrected bill from [redacted] today showing the credit and that they are now provider again. Thank you very much for your action. [redacted]

Review: I had an agreement with Discount Power for the supply of power through [redacted] distribution system at a discounted rate for a specific time period. At the end of this time period, it went to a variable rate. I was shocked to see this rate had become 0.219000/kwh, which is considerably more than double [redacted]'s rate of 0.9235/kwh. This resulted in a January electric bill of $840.18 for 2898.00kwh for my condo. As a retired person, living on a fixed income and having an all electric home, this is unreasonable. While I can understand that Discount Power would have to raise their rates, similar to the amount [redacted] has had to raise their rates, I find it unconscionable to almost triple their rate without giving notice to their consumers. I called Discount Power about the situaion, but was told that they had no responsibility to inform me of raises in rates.Desired Settlement: Reduced billing for the supply of electricity to my home for the January billing and any months beyond to the [redacted] current rate until A change in supplier become effective.

Our variable rates have been coming down since our high January prices. Discount Power's goal is to show value to our customers, and we expect to provide value to them in the long run.

He said that their rates were historically lower for the last 5 years than [redacted]. He used false and deceptive marketing practices including aggressive telephone solicitations. Review: Switched to discount power when promised a lower rate. Rate of kilowatt per hour doubled the first month, then tripled the second month. Review: I was contacted a few months ago by Discount Power and told I could save money over the year by switching to them as my electricity supplier. The rate I was given was .06. After two months of service; without any notice; the rate increases 350% to .21. I used less electicity in January then in December and my bill increased $115. I switched because I was told I would have savings over the course of a year. These are unethical business practices; and the possibility of something like this happening was in no way explained to me over the phone. I have called Discount Power was told there was nothing they could do.Desired Settlement: I would like my rate on my current bill to be readjusted back to .06 or to a fair market rate which most other suppliers are advertising at .09.

Review: If you could, never deal with Discount Power.I was driven hard by a sales man on phone to join floating rate program by Discount Power, with starting rate of 6.99 cents/KW. Sounds a good rate, correct? In second month, Discount Power charged me 14 cents/KW. The rate is doubled. I immediately know Discount power is a shame business. How can your energy cost doubled in just one month? Of course, their cost is not doubled. But Discount Power is free to charge you any rate they want. So I immediately transfered out from Discount Power. But, Wait. When you do power transfer, it takes at least one bill cycle to transact your transfer. In the 3rd month, Discount Power charged me 22 cents/KW. It is tripled within two month! Hallelujah! You can get out of it. But they already robbed you for two months! I suspect that most of the victims of Discount Power are those seniors and less educated consumers (more likely poor families). I don't think Discount Power is a electric power generator (anyone can tell me?). They just hire a bunch of cheap India salesmen to call you and rob you. This business is allowed by the government to be created to rob those seniors and poor families! Other than that, anybody can tell me what other values this business can create for our society?! It does make the owner of Discount Power rich and richer! Why this can happen? Because those rich men can tell government that free markets do not need regulation! Is electric power a free market?! Anybody remember [redacted] and how it robbed California people?!Desired Settlement: I would like to see Discount Power refund the extremely high charges to all those poor families, not just refund to me. How much ammount? The difference between the charged rate and the current Discount Power's advertised rate, times the KWs consumed. In my case, It should be 870*(0.219-0.089) dollar for this month. I have to find out how much electricity I used last month.

Discount Power received a drop request from Mr. **’s utility company, [redacted], on January 22, 2014 which advised that his service through Discount Power would end effective February 21, 2014. As the utility company determines when a customer’s service can begin and end with a third party supplier, Discount Power was not able to control this date. Mr. ** was contacted on March 7, 2014 and spoke with a Customer Care Representative who offered to re-rate Mr. **’s supply charge for his December 20, 2013 – January 22, 2014 and January 22, 2014 – February 21, 2014 billing cycles. This resulted in a refund offer of $53.01 to be issued via mailed check. As of March 7, 2014 this refund is being processed and a check will be mailed to Mr. ** as soon as possible.

I am rejecting this response because:

It did not tell me how that $53 refund is calculated.

The whole response is a standard paragraph by its lawyer. It did not tell us what the rate Discount Power charged me and what fair market rate should be at the time. I expect the refund equals to (PriceByDiscount Power - PriceInFairMarket)* amountOfElectricity.

Sincerely,

Review: I'm being charged almost 22 cents per KWH for Generation Service Charge whereas [redacted] is charging less than 9.3 cents per KWH.I signed with Discount Power because I was promised a "discount" from standard electric company rates for GSC.Desired Settlement: I either want them to honor the "Discount" in the name Discount Power and refund the difference in the GSC; or let me continue again with [redacted] with no penalty for quitting their not-so-discount service.

This customer is on Discount Power's variable rate. Due to the high wholesale rates this winter, Discount Power's variable rates increased. Our variable rates have been coming down since our high January prices. Discount Power has no cancellation fees on this product, so the customer is not penalized for going back to the utility for generation service.

Review: A few months ago I got in insert in the envelope from the condominium management which recommended to switch a current electrical supplier to "Discount power inc " which offers lower rates. I followed their advice and signed myself up. Slight variation in rates first months were within reasonable limits but December bill brought a rate of $.1999 per kWh. A 2.02 times increase within a single month. My bill came up $998.73. I still cant believe it .Since I get bills electronically I called them the very next day after December reading asking for an explanation. I got no explanation why they doubled the rates and why they called themselves "discount power".I asked them to let me pay the bill according to the previous month rate. They didn't let me. The representative didn't let me speak to any other person in the company. I [redacted] cannot afford such electric expense which covers mostly the heat - that means just surviving unusual severe weather this year. Of source I switched to [redacted].Desired Settlement: I would like to pay the December meter reading using the rates before the increase which was 0.09800 per kW or the December rates of my current supplier [redacted]

Review: I have used Discount Power for our energy source since January 2010 to present day, within this time they have only increased their kwh rate month to month by plus or minus 2 cents. However this year they deemed is necessary to make a 10 cent jump for January 2014 without any notice. we payed .0998 cents per kwh in December of 2013 and as of January they increase the rate to .199 cents per kwh. My wife and I live on a modest retirement income, this resulted in a January energy bill of $765.10 which was not in our budget and is causing considerable stress. I checked with other power suppliers and they remain within .09 to .10 cents. I see no valid reason for this increase.Desired Settlement: Charge us a reasonable competitive rate.

While we cannot promise savings versus the utility company every single month, Discount Power’s goal is to show a savings versus the utility over a period of time. Mr. [redacted] enrolled in February of 2010 and Discount Power became his supplier effective in March 2010. Our current rates are available each month through the Connecticut Public Utilities Regulatory Authority website [redacted] so that our customers can stay up-to-date on our rates and how they compare to other suppliers, at their own convenience. A Customer Service attempted to contact Mr. [redacted] on March 7, March 10 and March 11, 2014 and left messages for Mr. [redacted] to offer him a re-rate for his December 4, 2015 – January 6, 2014 usage at a rate equivalent to Discount Power’s cost for that supply. We have unfortunately been unable to reach Mr. [redacted] and have not heard back from him. Despite our inability to speak with Mr. [redacted], his usage for that billing cycle has been re-rated and a refund check for $41.80 is being processed. As of March 14, 2014 this refund is being processed and a check will be mailed to Mr. [redacted] as soon as possible.

This customer was also sent by mail the terms and conditions for the product that clearly state that the price is variable and can change monthly.

Ms. [redacted], Thank you for the opportunity to respond. Attached please find the [redacted] recording of [redacted] assenting to service With Discount Power, Inc. (“DPI”) in May, 2014. [redacted], The customer called on 4/2/15 and requested he be dropped. Discount Power, Inc. ("DPI") immediately placed a drop on his account which takes place on his next meter read date of 5/11/15. The date is determined by his utility, [redacted] Power, not DPI. [redacted]

Review: I am a customer of [redacted] for my delivery service. I also have direct energy as my electrical supplier. my last bill was $322.12 My current bill is $538.68. Discount powers portion is $391.40 .There rate more than doubled from the month prior. Apparently I have a variable rate which I was unaware of. They claim on there website that the rate can vary according to current market conditions. I just called [redacted] and they told me there rate is less than 10 cents, and they have had multiple complaints today because of this. Discount powers rate they charged me is 22 cents. I wasnt forewarned the rate would more than double. [redacted] who is usually on the high side is less than 1/2. It doesnt seem to me that discount power is following market conditions. Its more like they are abusing the rates. Is there anything I can do? Is this legal? I have already signed on with another company but it may take up to 2 months to change over. Please advise me what I can do. Times are hard enough without a company raping the public like this. Thanks [redacted]Desired Settlement: I understand they can raise there rates but this seems a little over the top and isnt in keeping with the other companies.

Response:

This customer enrolled with Discount Power on our variable rate with a cap price, and the cap price was in effect through the beginning of 2013. When this customer enrolled, terms and conditions were sent validating the product they were being supplied on. Up until this winter, Discount Power's rates did not vary much, which led many customers to incorrectly believe they were on a fixed price product. Discount Power's variable rates follow the wholesale market, and if a customer want to have a rate where they can get price protection we offer that also.
