Wednesday Dec14, a driver for *** *** *** *** came into our location driving a Chevrolet Uplander wheelchair service vehicle with a passenger side rear flat tire. The flat tire was a studded snow tire that had been
driven on without air for too long. This kind of damage creates an issue causing the tire to become unsafe and unable to be repaired.
After inspection of the tires on the vehicle, we informed the driver that we could do nothing to fix the flat tire and the other snow tires were missing studs, some studs were falling out, and other studs were driven down flat. Our technician took the driver into the bays and had her inspect the tires with him
Two options were given to the driver after the inspection: 1) install spare on the vehicle so customer can drive back to where the county has the vehicle serviced, 2) replace the worn out studded snow tires with new fully studded snow tires
Driver contacted her county fleet and had the full replacement authorized. She expressed concern of safety for her senior citizen passengers that she would be transporting. Dec14th, was a winter storm day for the Portland Oregon Metro area. Including many vehicles being abandoned on roads due to severely unsafe weather and driving conditions. This vehicle had to pick up passengers in these conditions and travel with the passengers
We were given full authorization at the time of the service to install new snow tires that were in way better condition for the weather system that moved in. The driver took the tires that we removed from the vehicle. As to the mechanic shop that is stating the old tires had sufficient tread remaining would be a true statement but the safety of the tires pertaining to the studs was no longer sufficient. Once the studs are missing/worn/falling out the studded snow tire loses its ability to be a functioning traction device for inclement weather

*** *** came into our location Saturday May 14, 2016, in the afternoon and presented an issue of pulling
when driving. Our technicians inspected the vehicle and found that a tire had separated. The last known installation of the tire was done January as per customer request at time of service to install that P235/75R-SXT tire. Mr*** supplied a copy of the invoice for SXT tire purchase which has the price per tire at $
On 05/14/the SXT tire had a tread reading of 6-8/32nds remaining on tire. We put together an adjustment for the tire at an 8/32nds tread reading to better Mr***'s proration amount and result in a less out-of-pocket outcome for the customer. This 8/32nds tread reading provided a 50% proration off of the original tire purchase in of $giving Mr*** $credit towards a replacement tire purchase (as per our Les Schwab Warranty). Instead of any charge to the customer, we offered to locate a matching used tire (matching used tire meaning: same size, make/model, and tread remaining) and install on vehicle free of charge as a satisfaction warranty which the customer declined. Mr*** is claiming that he is entitled to a 100% free of charge new tire and as per warranty stipulations he does not fall under the 100% free replacement
Les Schwab Warranty:
If a Covered Tire is eligible for Tire Protection, fails to conform to the limited warranty for tread life, or fails due to defects in manufacture or materials, Les Schwab will provide at its election one of the following exclusive remedies:
A) If a Covered Tire eligible for Tire Protection incurs non-repairable damage during the first 25% of tread wear, Les Schwab will replace it free of charge. After the first 25% of tread wear, Les Schwab will provide a pro-rata adjustment consistent with section (C)
B) If a Covered Tire wears to a tread depth of 2/32nds before the mileage indicated in the limited warranty for tread life, Les Schwab will make a pro-rata adjustment based on the original purchase price, excluding Federal Excise Tax, multiplied by the pro-rata adjustment. The pro-rata adjustment is 100% less miles of service divided by the mileage indicated in the limited warranty for tread life
C) If a Covered Tire fails due to defects in its manufacture or materials during the first 25% of tread wear, Les Schwab will replace it free of charge. After the first 25% of tread wear, Les Schwab will make a pro-rata adjustment based on the original purchase price, excluding Federal Excise Tax, multiplied by the pro-rata adjustment. The pro-rata adjustment is the percentage of remaining tread down to 2/32nds. Except as set forth in section (B), a tire worn down to 2/32nds tread depth is not a Covered Tire
D) you may elect to receive an adjustment in the form of cash or a credit applied to the purchase of new tires at any Les Schwab Tire Center

Complaint: ***I am rejecting this response because:

Store Manager Richard H*** first accused me of having a tire that Les Schwab did not carry, saying that I was lying, and that he would not replace it without my paperwork.? He has been argumentative with me in the past, and even ‘joked’ that he likes to argue with me.? This is not good customer service in my opinion

MrH*** clearly told me when I came into his store on Saturday, May 2016; that an older tire such as this is commonly faulty.? That an older tire can often delaminate or wear more quickly.? He stated this while he was under the assumption that he was not going to have to honor a warranty, as he was accusing me of having a non-Les Schwab tire
?
I brought in the paperwork the same afternoon, and he still refused to honor the warranty and replace the tire.? He now switched his argument to being about tread depth instead of our original discussion about mileage

He stated verbally with his tread gauge in hand that the tire had 8/32nd’s of tread depth.? He verified the tread depth twice
Then he placed in writing (Work Order #***) that the tire had to 8-32nds tread depth
He is now stating that the tire has 6-8/32nds of tread depth, to further try and devalue my tire

I appreciate that Les Schwab is a business, and that businesses want to make money; but employees being should not be acceptable and is not in the nature of the excellent customer service that has kept me a loyal Les Schwab customer for years

I purchased this tire originally in
I have purchased seven (7) new Wild Country 235/75R-tires from Les Schwab since then, because they discontinued carrying the WildCat tires.? At each time of purchase, the staff at Les Schwab convinced me that I should not rotate this tire onto my vehicle, and that I should give them more money for new tires.? There were seven other times when Les Schwab could have saved me money, and rotated the tire into use.? In January 2016, I finally refused to keep buying new tires, when I was told by Les Schwab that I had a perfectly good tire that could be rotated in.? Les Schwab installed the unused WildCat P235/75R-tire.? MrH*** even remarked on there still being rubber ‘hairs’ on it

After only 2,miles (or 6.5% of expected wear) the tire has tread separation
The other four tires that I purchased at the same time had 49,miles of wear, before they were replaced, putting the effective life of this tire at only 5% of its expected wear
Well under the 25% warranted for free replacement

It is my understanding that according to the U.SDepartment of Transportation (DOT) National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's (NHTSA) Uniform Tire Quality Grade Standards (UTQG) that defects in the design or manufacturing of tires may cause tread separationSometimes, errors in the chemical portion of the manufacturing process cause the tread and steel belting not to bond correctlyWhen this occurs, the manufacturer is liable for repairs

In January 2016, when Les Schwab installed this tire, I was not aware that as rubber ages, it loses elasticity, hardens and can become brittleThe reinforcing cords inside a tire can also deteriorate and lose strengthThis increases the risk of a sudden tire failure the older a tire getsAfter six years, the risk of failure goes up sharplyBecause of this, many safety experts say tires that are more than six years old have expired and should be replaced regardless of how much tread is left on the tires

Les Schwab, with their tire expertise, is fully aware of this
As such, they should not have recklessly endangered me by installing a fifteen (15) year old tire
And, this is why I am not willing to accept a “matching used tire meaning: same size, make/model, and tread remaining” as it is not considered to be safe

The results of tread separation can be catastrophicTread belt separations frequently cause tire blowoutsEven when the tire does not lose pressure the driver often loses control of the vehicle when the tread and belt separate from the carcass of the tire resulting in vehicle loss of control and rollovers that have resulted in thousands of serious injuries and fatalities

Les Schwab has been selling me on Wild Country 235/75R-tires since 2008.? I would like for them to honor their word, and replace my faulty WildCat P235/75R-tire with a new Wild Country 235/75R-tires; as they have told me time and again, that is the proper replacement tire.Sincerely,*** ***
