District Locksmith Reviews (1)

Review: On Sunday, June 29, 2014, I was locked out of my apartment in Washington, D.C. When I called the management of my complex, the [redacted], I was told there would be a surcharge of $150.00 to open the door since it was a weekend claim. I decided I could find the service for cheaper from a private company and told the [redacted] I would be back in touch if I was unable to find someone else. I called District Locksmith for an estimate, and the receptionist told me that residential lockout services usually ran around $50.00. This was about the price I expected, considering $45.00 was the starting cost of the service on the website.

The technician arrived at the [redacted] about 35 minutes later, and we proceeded to my apartment to look at the lock. He told me the lock was a “mechanism lock” and that it would cost $349.00 to open. I audibly laughed. I explained to him I was a student and that I did not have $349.00 to pay for the service. I also told him the figure seemed high considering the [redacted] had offered to open it for less than half of the cost. We talked more about the lock, and the technician asked me which way I turned my key to open the door; I told him to the left. He then asked if the deadbolt was engaged on the door. I told him I didn’t believe the door had a deadbolt. He explained that if the deadbolt was not engaged, he might be able to use a different, simpler technique to open the door that would not carry the $349.00 charge. However, there was no promise that this technique would work.

In less than five minutes, the technician was able to open the door with this “newly realized” operation since the deadbolt was not engaged. You can imagine how excited I was; I could finally return my Sunday afternoon to normalcy from a nervous panic. The excitement did not last long. The technician soon told me that the charge would in fact be $349.00. I was floored. I recapped our entire previous conversation to him, even reiterating the point I had been explicit in saying I did not have $349.00 to pay for the service the initially. Furthermore, why would I agree to pay for a service that was double the quote I had received from the [redacted]?

I called District Locksmith immediately after the transaction, 11:33am, to express my frustration with the situation. The operator apologized profusely and told me a manager would call me back at his earliest convenience to work something out. When I didn’t receive a call, I phoned again and spoke with the receptionist, Ariel (9:33pm). Again, I was unable to speak with a manager.

District Locksmith has violated the terms and conditions provided on their website stating the “representatives on the phone will assess your lock needs, and provide a more accurate estimate. This is to prevent any misunderstanding, and expedite quality service to you, for when our technician arrives at your location.” In my experience with District Locksmith, there was a great misunderstanding. Not only am I disappointed in the lack of protocol for establishing a price at the beginning of a visit, a promise made on the website: “exact price estimates for all lock work requested”, I’m disappointed in the general demeanor and lack of professionalism from the technician. This unfortunate event is further insulted by the fact the District Locksmith website states: “We are a company based on working with our customers, not against.” I am appalled and feel scammed. I sincerely hope District Locksmith will take appropriate measures to rectify this visit.Desired Settlement: I sincerely hope District Locksmith will take appropriate measures to rectify this visit. If not by providing me the rate I was originally quoted on the phone and listed on their website, at least by providing me with the rate I was given by the [redacted] and that I explicitly stated to technician I could have the service completed for, $150.00. This billing adjustment should be reflected as a refund to my credit card in the appropriate amount.
