Time to Retire Anesthesiologist
I was admitted on 5/21/24 for a cardiac ablation due to Paroxysmal atrial fibrillation and atrial flutter. Although the ablation itself was successful the intubation itself was a mess. My understanding was that I was wheeled into the OR around 0700 and was not handed over to my surgical cardiologist till around 11am. The reason that I was given was that I was supposedly difficult to intubate. (Let me say that I have been intubated a couple times before and one in an emergency setting and Not once did the anesthesiologist ever have difficulty.) I came out of the procedure with an inability to swallow, talk and severe swelling to the jaw and neck line. There was blood everywhere. I found clumps of blood in the back of my head , both my arms were all bloody and my hands and nails were also full of blood. When I asked what happened my cardiologist chuckled and said "oh it was a bloody mess" they had a hard time intubating. Well he wound up extending my stay due to my pain level, inability to eat, drink or swallow and severe swelling to my jaw and neck. He started me on sterroids to bring the swelling down. He also had the anesthesiologist come see and all he did was tell me that the swelling would go away. I also had a hospital come take a picture of my BUTT because I had been laying in bed? The first night my son asked my menu to be switched to a liquid diet since I couldn't eat, chew much less swallow and was told to just ask dietary to change me meal because my dr was gone for the day and they'd have to call him to make changes to my chart. I was severely congested so charged nurse attempted to suction. First attempt was through my throat and that was epic fail. Second she went through the nose, I told her to stop both times due to pain and she only stopped when she drew blood. I wanted out! I forced myself to swallow pudding and took a few sips of water. This was enough for the nurse to tell my dr in the morning that I had managed to eat! I was discharged on 5/23/24 . On 5/29/24 I was taken to the Valley Baptist Micro Hospital located in Weslaco. I was admitted under acute neck pain, Post-operative complication, Retropharyngeal abscess ,dizziness and headache. Diagnosis at discharge to Valley Baptist in Harlingen was as follows;Comoplex fluid collection in right neck,5.2x3.7 cm concerning for hematoma vs abscess, with mild midline of proximal trachea! (per CT 5/29/24) s/p difficult intubation 5/21/24
Sepsis, SIRS 2/4 secondary to above, resolved
I spent a week at valley baptist and would never return to DHR nor would I ever recommend them to anyone! Attached are some photos taken and I do have an audio recording of my cardiac surgeon explaining what happen prior to procedure. Did I also mention that I woke up TWICE during the attempt to intubate and prep me! THAT is altogether another long tale and one I don't like to relive if possible. I was also left with a lisp that I work hard at erradicating!**Apparently I can only upload 1 photo! FIX THIS DHR!
