Doggrell Painting Inc Reviews (1)

Review: I am contacting the Revdex.com to file a complaint against Doggrell Painting. Doggrell Painting was contracted to prep and paint a dwelling for $7,740. Mr. Doggrell's contract specified "thorough preparation". Other than pressure washing which left paint chips scattered, there was little preparation. Mr. Doggrell insisted that there was no sanding in the contract until I had him read the contract where sanding is mentioned twice. Even so, Mr. Doggrell refused to have obvious problem areas sanded unless he was paid more.Desired Settlement: I am requesting a refund of $2,500 of the $7,740 paid.

Doggrell Painting, Inc. complaint [redacted]

I think it’s important to mention that this is the only complaint (to my knowledge) to the Revdex.com in over twenty five years. I feel we have a good reputation, and that is not by accident. We really strive to serve our customers conscientiously with quality service.

Two statements in this complaint are simply untrue. First, we actually went well beyond the contract regarding how much preparation was done. Second, it is not true that I said there was no sanding in the contract. Upon inspection of the job, I saw that we did scrape and sand off the loose paint with a few exceptions. There were two spots where a little more scraping was required and a gap that needed caulking. These took a few minutes to correct, which we did. The real problem is that he wanted us to include a lot of work that was not in the contract.

We completed this job in July 2012. This complaint was made over two years later. Perhaps he did not read the contract or the Exterior Preparation sheet. Or perhaps in the passage of time he does not remember what they said. Following are quotes from them.

In the first paragraph of the contract, it says that we will:

“Scrape and sand as needed to remove loose, peeling paint to a tight edge.”

Then, later in the first paragraph of the contract it says:

“Please see the Exterior Preparation sheet enclosed for more details.”

In the Exterior Preparation sheet, sanding is described in greater detail. At the top of this sheet, it says in large print: “Please read – Important”. Here I quote from it:

“Our Standard Preparation for Peeling Paint

Using sharp carbide scrapers, we will thoroughly scrape off peeling paint. After we scrape off the peeling paint there will be edges, but the edges will be holding, not lifting. The thicker the layers of paint that are scraped off, the rougher the edges will be.

Then we will scuff-sand the problem areas so the new paint will adhere well. Scuff sanding also smoothes the edges a little, but the edges will still be visible where the peeling paint was scraped off. A quality primer will be applied to any bare wood.

This is the level of preparation that is included unless stated differently in your estimate. Most people choose this level of preparation.”

We scraped and scuff sanded to take off the peeling paint to where the edges were tight. This did smooth the edges a little, but as stated we did not include sanding the edges of the old paint smooth. Again, the above statement says: “After we scrape off the peeling paint there will be edges”. Since there were older layers of paint that were thick on the house – where scraping was done, as stated, the edges were rough. Scuff sanding is done to scuff (roughen) the problem areas so the new paint will stick. Scuffing it only smoothes it a little. The rough edges are still visible.

The next section in the Exterior Preparation sheet addresses smoothing these edges:

“Exterior Spackling and Feather Sanding

We can perform two types of additional preparation that help to smooth the edges. We can apply exterior spackling, or we can “feather sand” the edges (sand the edges to make them smoother).”

Then skipping to the next paragraph in this section:

“The greater the degree of smoothness you desire, the more labor is required, and therefore the cost is higher.”

Then later in the Exterior Preparation sheet:

“Exterior spackling, feather sanding, and stripping are only included if stated in your contract.”

These statements show the level of preparation that was included and what was not included. Smoothing the edges of the old paint were not included.

I spoke with him about all this at the job site. Regardless, the customer wanted us to sand the edges of the old paint smoother in a lot of areas. I told him that the contract says that smoothing is not included and would cost extra, but he insisted on us doing it anyway. He said that he would not pay us anything until we did it. Since I wanted to be paid for our work, I agreed to do it. To go the extra mile, we also sanded smoother a few other areas that he did not ask us to. Our painters did extra sanding that same day that I met with him. Then the job supervisor and another painter returned the following day (for a full day) to do more extra sanding at no charge. We went beyond the contract and even beyond the extra sanding that he wanted. When they were done, he told the men that it was good. We mailed them the bill and they paid it.

One could literally sand for weeks to smooth rough edges on an older house, and still not have it all smooth. But this was not what was agreed on in the contract. However, at a considerable cost to us, we gave him the extra sanding he demanded for free, and more. Two years later he claims that we did not do sanding and wants money from us. This is not a right or fair request. I am sending a copy of the contract to the Revdex.com.
