DONOTPAY Reviews (%countItem)

This business automatically signs you up to take money out of your checking account, but claims it will not start the subscription until you file your first case. This did not happen and the company started to withdrawal $3/month without my permission or filing my first claim. Very much using false advertising to get checking account information.

Hi,

The refund is being processed and should take 1-10 business days to reflect on your bank statement.

Best,

Stacy

Revdex.com:

I have reviewed the response made by the business in reference to complaint ID, and find that this resolution is satisfactory to me. I do believe they are signing people up and charging them which is contradictory to their terms of agreement.

Sincerely

The founder of DoNotPay went on Good Morning America and said that they were offering a free service for people to file for unemployment during the Covid-19 pandemic. I got the app and applied. After waiting about 2 months, I found out I was not able to apply and they app would not say why. It only sent me to a portal that did not exist. Then I noticed that they had taken $3.00 out of my banking account monthly, on 4/17/2020, 5/18/2020, and 6/18/2020. I had not authorized the to take money out of my account. I had not signed up for a subscription of any sorts. I went on the app to try to contact someone and all they have is a robot that gives you options for questions and answers. You cannot type anything. There is no phone number and no email address. There is no way to cancel anything on the app and there is no way to take your bank account off.

I wanted to try this app and when I did I was immediately charged $3 . I have wrote several times to do not pay support and tech support to fix my address and no one replies . It says it will be fixed in 24 hours. It has been over a week and my address is still wrong. I had a letter drafted from the app to a company and can't even send it because my address is incorrect. I live in a small town and the way your app is set up the address section goes to a search bar; my address comes up wrong.

Hello there,

We use google maps as default to save your address and location which we cannot manually fix. I have as a courtesy, refunded the charge that was made to you.

Please let us know if there are other problems.

Best,

James

I initially signed up for DoNotPay after seeing them on my local news. I needed help getting unemployment benefits from IL, due to the COVID-19 shutdowns. DoNotPay said they would charge $3 a month for their services and you could cancel anytime, to which I agreed. The service they were to provide was to get a hold of IL unemployment for me, so I didn't have to remain on hold, and then they would provide a call back. This never happened. After weeks of trying, I finally got a hold of unemployment myself. I have attempted to get a refund from DoNotPay, following their directions and also cancel my account with them. They have continued to deduct $3 from my checking account every month for something I've repeatedly asked them to cancel. They have never responded to any communications I have sent and have so far, collected a total of $9 from my checking account.

Dear whom it may concern,

We apologize for not realizing you wanted to cancel your account. Subscription with us can be easily cancelled by going to the "Help" Menu on the upper right corner.

However, we have refunded the amount of $9 to you and cancelled your subscription.

Best,

DoNotPay Team

Upon sign up, this app requires a bank account or credit card number. The app is free to download. There is no disclosure anywhere that the user will ever be charged nor what amount. The user is immediately charged $3, and then $3 monthly thereafter. The only way to cancel service is to email the company. There is no way within the app or website to cancel. The app charges customers without consent. There are many complaints on the app store about this lack of disclosure and lack of agreement to pay.

On sign up, the "why do you need my bank" pop-up provides irrelevant information, solely stating: "We do not store any password or personal transactions and have no access to your account details. Our systems use 256-bit SSL encryption and the connection is handled via Plaid, a company that powers your favorite financial apps."

This is especially predatory as the app is downloaded for free and the company gives alternative reasons for requesting the bank account and credit card.

Within the terms of use, alternative reasons, all NOT related to subscription fee are given, further misleading customers:
"DoNotPay requires ACH bank account access or payment details for three reasons:
To send you any money reclaimed from corporations and governments.
To process any payments made in the app.
To process any external government/corporation fees to help you complete your task. For example, if you ask DoNotPay to pay your parking ticket for you, it will debit the cost of paying the parking ticket from your connected account. DoNotPay will always secure permission in writing from you before debiting any external fees."

I emailed the company and the founder, requesting proof of the disclaimer or any agreement upon signup that the user agrees to be charged $3. My request was ignored, and to date, the company has NOT made it clear anywhere in the signup process or on the website or app store that the user is charged $3 a month unless they opt-out by emailing the company. The only reference to paid services is in their terms of use which does not specify any specific amount and simply, and makes all payments seem merely potential, not providing proper notice nor consent for any charge: "DoNotPay may offer Services to be paid for on a recurring basis." There is nowhere on signup that it is disclosed the user is signing up for paid Subscription Services. The terms of use are not sufficient. This is an unfair and deceptive trade practice.

Hi there, we have an easy way to cancel the subscription by going to settings-->Help-->Manage My account. There, you can talk to our chatbot which will cancel the subscription.

In addition, if there is good reason, we cancel and refund the charges once the user emails us at [email protected].

I saw a story on the news featuring donotpay.com. I was trying to get my unemployment at the time, and the story said this company could possibly help if there was an issue. I visited the website and I created an account. I did not end up using the service, and yet my bank account was debited. I attempted to log into my account to cancel whatever I may have inadvertently signed up for. I am unable to sign into my account to resolve this issue. I searched for a way to contact the company. I found an email address and I sent them a very clear message that I wanted my account canceled, and that I wanted debits to stop from my account. I received a reply that they would get back to me within 24 hours. When they did not get back to me within 24 hours I sent another message reiterating my desire to cancel anything I may have signed up for and for them to cease any and all debits from my bank account. I have received no response and I still cannot sign in to resolve this issue. I feel this is very sneaky way of getting people's information and charging them for services that were not rendered. And then to make it impossible to get ahold of them to fix the problem is not right.

Hi there,

We have gone ahead and refunded your $3. Please be advised that signing up for our service costs money and due to privacy issues with Apple iOS devices, we do not know how much you use it.

Let us know if you have any other issues at [email protected]

Best regards,

DoNotPay Team

This company states in their terms of service specifically to email them to cancel. I have the emails to prove that I have emailed them multiple times to cancel and they continue to charge me over and over and over. for months I have be charged against my consent and I cant get them to stop charging me. they wont respond to my emails and I do not have a way other than email to contact them. I have reported this to my bank as a fraudulent charge.
