ZERO STARS. Worst experience I have ever had with a repair company. I was charged almost 400.00 to replace a 12.00 pressure gauge. Most of that expense was for the technician to drive around town looking for a replacement part. The RIGHT thing for him to have done would have been to leave my home, order the part, and then come back and fix it - thereby saving me hundreds of dollars of 'labor' charges. I was never given an estimate, options, invoice, or anything of the sort. Just a business card with a dollar amount written on it that I was expected to pay. SO UNPROFESSIONAL. They got my email wrong so I never received an invoice and had to track one down myself. On a subsequent appointment to finish the job they texted me to let me know that the tech would be coming an hour earlier than had been originally planned, at 11am. I cancelled an appointment I had and waited...UNTIL 1PM - TWO HOURS AFTER OUR RESCHEDULED TIME. Apparently the dispatcher had 'forgotten' to let me know he would be late. When I disputed the excessive charges and tried to share my side they acted like everything was my fault and could have literally cared less. This company is all about maximizing their bottom line and cares nothing for the customer. Beware!!!

Doug's Repair has continually violates the CC&R's of the Island Park Village. The latest is parking a flatbed trailer on one full side of the street. Other violations: pumping a sump pump directly on the street flooding the street and creating a mosquito bog, creating a fire hazard for over 2 months with slash to name a few. Most disorganized, sloppy, littered, and unsafe construction site I've seen in almost 50 years in the construction industry. If the site and CC&R violations indicate the quality of their work good luck to the customers.

I had moved out of my home and it was being sold to a family during which time a hail storm in the area damaged several roofs in our neighborhood. The new family asked if I would make a claim on my insurance since the home was still in my name at the time of the storm, even though I was not living there. We did so, in April of 2017. Apparently, the repairs were done in May 2017 to qualify for the repairs being done within one year of the damage.

Doug's Repair Salesman Brandon B drove the *** neighborhood in Rexburg pointing out roof damage and making sales to people who were not aware of the damage to their roofs. He drummed up a lot of business, including the owners of my previous home. I was there the day the insurance inspector came to view the roof, which one month prior to the storm was in perfect condition as it was inspected for sale. There was some damage and the inspector suggested some repairs. Interestingly enough, Brandon was there. He started making all sorts of promises of "I will only charge you what the insurance will pay, we use the same system to calculate materials and labor. You won't pay anything out of pocket." In the next breath, he tells them, "I can add vents to your roof and I can change this slope so that the snow does not build up, etc."

6 months later, we finally get a bill. I had paid $7983 at this point and held the final payment for two months before he produced a bill of $9489.
However, my insurance tells me he has continually requested more money, up to $15,022. The roof cost was estimated at $7543. That is double!!! I questioned the family and they admitted that he (as a personal friend) told them he would inflate all his costs to cover all the upgrades to their home and my insurance would pay $100! He is telling the family that we owe him more money - even $1500 more than HIS BILL.

The family admitted to agreeing to these dishonest acts. They also said he is driving a brand new pick-up truck.

Doug's Construction & Repair Response

My name is Josh M, I am an owner of Doug’s Repair. First of all I want to say that I have never had a complaint about me letting customers keep their money longer. I wish that more customers would complain about that. I do apologize if this aspect has frustrated you as it has also frustrated me and has been a growing pain of ours. We are working to make sure our billing is prompt. Part of the reason why it has taken so long is that we were under the impression that we were going to do more work than the roof. It has been made clear that we aren’t doing more work and we then moved forward with billing.

I want to cover all of the points that have been brought up.

I would dispute that the inspector suggested “some repairs” as your adjuster who you are referring to as your inspector totaled your entire roof. This is why we replaced your entire roof, that is not “some repairs” as stated by you, that is your entire roof.

There was damage that was done to the house beyond the roof, which is why the $15,022 was requested. I don’t understand why anyone would be mad that we are trying to get their insurance to pay for more things that are related to the storm damage. We never said that we would inflate the cost to cover all of the upgrades. We did however discuss finding all storm related damages to the property. This gives the homeowner the opportunity to receive all of the money that the insurance company should pay related to the homeowners ACV (Actual Cash Value). This does not mean that Doug’s Repair is requesting to be paid the ACV amount for the work that hasn’t been done from the homeowner, or the RCV (Replacement Cash Value) for the work that hasn’t been done from the insurance company. It would be considered insurance fraud if we were trying to receive RCV for work not completed.

We stand behind the fact that we will only charge what the insurance will pay. We have had a conversation with ***s ***’s insurance company over the phone, and that phone call is recorded, in which they told us they paid $9131.95 for the roof. We had already agreed to drop it to that amount with the current homeowner before the complaint was written.

We use Xactimate, which is the same program that ***’s insurance company uses. You can call them and confirm that. This allows us to have the same pricing as them because we can download pricing lists for that month that they also have. The only discrepancies in price would be quantities of materials and code requirements that the insurance company is unaware of. This is why the insurance company agreed to increase their numbers for the roof to $9131.95 from 7543.91.

The one thing that we don’t do, is tell people we will pay their deductible. That is something that we make very clear on every job that we go to because that is actually committing insurance fraud. We are not expecting a deductible to come to us we are expecting the amount of $9131.95 to be paid to us, which is the amount that the insurance agreed to pay for the roof.

The garage repair was taken care around two weeks after we heard about it and has been taken care of over a week before this complaint was written.

The complete replacement of your roof, not “repairs” of your home were not done in the rain. It was started and then half way through it rained without our control. Luckily our roofers are skilled enough that they worked as fast as possible to let there only be one leak that was 2ftx2ft in the garage. Once again the damage to the sheetrock was taken care of over a week before this complaint was written.

We have talked to the current homeowners and are going to send them a copy of this complaint. They are extremely upset that any of this has been said about them and that ***s *** is implicating them by misconstruing and being dishonest about what they talked about concerning this situation.

The things that have been written by *** in this complaint are considered slander towards the current homeowners, Brandon B, and Doug’s Repair and we will be having our attorney review them.

Customer Response

Complaint: ***

I am rejecting this response because:

This is not a resolution. This is combative and threatening and unprofessional.

I have been reasonable and fair this entire process. I am not trying to be slanderous nor am I just trying to ruin business. I really feel some dishonest acts have taken place and hoped for a better response than the condescending reply I received from the owner's son.

First of all, I have sold the home. I did not need to take out a claim on my insurance. The roof was in perfect condition in April when a home inspection was done by the owner's request in preparation for purchasing the home. I have the report. The damage caused by the hail storm was unknown to me because it was not living in the home at the time. Nor were any of my neighbors who did live in their homes aware there was any damage until it was solicited by your business. Several have said they are not sure they would have done it if they could go back. That they would have gotten second opinions or done business with someone else. It was not a good experience for many, not just me.

I could have said "No" to filing a claim. I did not owe this family anything. In fact, the closing of our house did not go well and I got taken in some closing costs that were also not honest and I should have probably let them pay out of pocket to fix their roof. But I felt it was the right thing to do, regardless of the history. I am not vindictive and I try to do the right thing.

There is no reason for me to protect this family. But I submitted that as part of the remedy that their garage be fixed. This is because just last Friday the owner said she was still holding on to some of the money because the roof was only primed rather than fixed and not done to their satisfaction. I didn't need to take up their banner in this cause, but I think it is the right thing to do as part of the remedy. They can work that out. She has the money.

We have been asking for a bill since September. I have multiple texts from her that he is promising to bring it. I know you are trying to defend your poor billing by saying that "no one has ever complained about keeping their money longer". This is money that was dispensed by insurance and has been held waiting for a bill for two months.

My conversations with the insurance were that the total $15,022 was for the roof only. We have never had anything about the siding. And I also have multiple texts from the owner as well as in person where she disclosed to me that Brandon did indeed tell them they would inflate costs to cover the additional renovations to the roof.

I am not arguing that the entire roof was re-shingled. I know there was damage to the siding on the west side and some window seals. However, the new slope over the entry and the vents have been added. Who paid for them? The family has not paid any money out of pocket yet and are very unhappy they have been asked to, because they said they were told it would all be covered. We recently had a claim in my mother-in-law's home from some flooding in the master bath which destroyed the newly remodeled downstairs in two rooms and bathroom. While they had it open, we opted for new pipes in a 50 year old house. We also decided that we needed to carpet the other two bedrooms while we were getting hers done. We paid for all of that out of pocket. When you choose to make upgrades that are not part of the original bid, you pay for it. The family admitted that Brandon promised them that he would "inflate the prices on the roof to cover the siding and windows". I have several texts from the family that "all because he is being greedy". I don't see why they are unhappy with me. I don't need to expose them, but I do have evidence of them always pointing the finger at his dishonest practices in this deal. I have been forthright with the family. They have everything I have from the insurance. I have added up the numbers for them. I have bent over backward to take care of them and now they are talking out both sides of their mouths in an effort to protect the dishonest deal with a friend. I wish you would just take responsibility that he (as a family friend) told this couple that he would do a great deal for them and my insurance would cover it. I am still willing to cover the cost of the siding being replaced. I will pay another company the amount agreed to by the insurance. I told the family to get some bids and I will approve it and pay it. I am not trying to keep anything from their home repair that they are justified in getting. I have been very open and honest with my insurance. They have been confused at all the requests for more money, as have I.

In our mother-in-law's case the entire thing was done in two months. Payment up front for about half of the cost. We had a few contractors and did much of the labor ourselves. Submitted pictures and receipts and were paid out the depreciated value. Done! If only your business functioned in a timely and honest way - I would not have questioned the repeated calls, letters, etc. from my insurance wondering if I had approved for new particle board to be put on the entire roof because your shingles were not sticking. I didn't know it was a problem. I asked the owner and they said that was not done. It was not on the bill. The home is practically new. And don't you have a better remedy than replacing ALL the boards just because your glue is not working? It seemed fishy. It has proven to be fishy . . . .and dishonest.

You have been paid the amount agreed to (save what the family still has in their possession pending the garage repair). There is not deductible owed you. If the family chooses to fix the siding, I will work with them on that. I hope you will be a little more solution oriented and not try and defend bad practices by trying to make me look uninformed.

I am fine with you showing your attorney. I have not said or done anything that is unjustified or exaggerated. I have all the evidence I need. I am not afraid of that threat and personally feel that you are a poor problem solver for suggesting it.

Thank you for your time.

Sincerely,
