Dear [redacted]:
Thank you for your letter of November 19, bringing to my attention a complaint you recently received (ID#[redacted]). It took me by surprise since this patient did not contact me prior to lodging a complaint with you. Of course, we want to do what we can to resolve this problem. In such a case, our normal course is to schedule the patient for a no-charge recheck. While I dispute his claim that he was rushed through the examination, it is still possible that a change in the Rx may be needed. It is also possible that he did not heed my warning that it would take time to adapt to the new Rx, since there was a large change in the prescription in one eye.
I feel that additional clarification of this case is necessary, however. Pearle Vision and its parent company, [redacted] conduct a program called Gift of Sight, which provides free eye exams and new glasses to people in need in our community. As part of this program, donated my time to provide this patient with a free eye examination, and Pearle Vision provided him with a free pair of glasses. He paid nothing for either the exam or the glasses, so therefore, his claim of a purchase price of $219.00 is without merit.
If the patient calls for an appointment, I will be happy to recheck the prescription at no charge. I have spoken to the store manager at Pearle, and he has generously offered to also remake the lenses at no charge if a significant change in the Rx is found. On the other hand, if the prescription turns out to be correct, our only remaining remedy will be to offer him the same as we would to any other customer. He may return the glasses, and I will advise that he see another doctor for a second opinion. Since he paid nothing for the Services or materials, however, it should be obvious that we will be unable to issue any refund. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to call me.
With Kindest Regards,Donald P. Groetzinger, O.D.
