I did speak personally with this guestHe was very upset, and did not show me his bill, so I was not sure of the exact change shortedI explained that this was a common practice throughout the industry, not just in SteamboatWe do not train our severs to round, however servers do not
always carry change with them and at times do round, expecting any change shorted to be taken out of a tip the guest may choose to leave for themThis was not acceptable to himI asked if the sever returned his change when requestedHe told me she gave him $1, which I now know is $over what he was owed. He then let me know he would not be tipping her anything for her serviceI apologized and let him know I was glad she took care of this for himHe then let me know he was a local who sent many people to our location and that he would no longer be supporting our business. After he left I spoke with his server as well as the rest of our staff, many of whom overheard his voiced concernOur entire staff agreed that this was a common practice throughout SteamboatThis situation has been brought to the attention of our entire management team, who are in the process of determining if this is a practice we would like to alterMy husband, co-owner, and I watched the cameras to determine if this was a guest either of us were familiar with so we could reach out should we decide to make a change to our policy Neither of us recognized him as someone who had been to our restaurant in the pastUnfortunately, I do not feel there was anything that could have been done to please this guestAn apology was given by myself as well as his server, and the change requested was returned
