Initial Business Response /* (1000, 7, 2015/08/04) */
Dear *** & ***,
When I had originally received an email from *** explaining the situation with the gate I let him know it was to have the post/gate settle and to have to adjust the latch slightlyI explained how to do this
if he wanted to do so, otherwise we would take care of it for him*** did email me the next spring asking for me to have a look at the post and latch because the post had cracked, unfortunately I did not make it to his house right away due to an extremely busy season and working long hoursWhen I did stop by to look at the latch and post I adjusted the latch and tried the gate 30-timesIt opened and closed properly with no issuesUnfortunately all wood and especially wood posts do crack as they dry outThe post did crack on the gate side where the gate latch screws were fastened, but not because of the screws, the post cracked because it dried out as it does naturallyThe crack will not split the post in half, several other of the posts have cracked or will crack in time, causing no damage besides being unsightly to some people if you look closelyI removed the post latch and fastened it into an area of the post that has not cracked and resolved the issue with the gateI emailed *** letting him know I had done this and if he did have any other issues with the gate opening and closing to let me know and I could adjust the latch again for himAs well in the email I explained how to adjust the latch if neededWe use top quality materials in all of our fence and deck buildsThe latch is the best thumb latch for fences, every gate latch will need to be adjusted in time as the ground or posts settlesThe post does not need to be replacedEvery wood post will crack once it driesUnfortunately by coincidence this post cracked exactly where the latch was fastenedWith moving the post latch the gate issue was resolved
Initial Consumer Rebuttal /* (3000, 9, 2015/08/07) */
(The consumer indicated he/she DID NOT accept the response from the business.)
This is a new fence and with the major cracking and movement of the latches original position the workmanship looks very poorThe gate does work now, however I feel that the life span of the gate and fence will be greatly decreasedAs well as a new latch will likely have to be installed in the future for no other reason than it is not as secure as I would like itFrom the correspondence with Dun Rite, I expect no further action on their behalf
Final Business Response /* (4000, 14, 2015/09/02) */
Yes this is 100% caused by natural drying of the wood, though unsightly to some, the structural integrity of the post and fence is not compromised due to the post naturally crackingI will send you pictures of other 6xposts that have cracked due to the wood naturally drying to show that is is a very common occurrenceAs the customer stated the post and gate are functioning properly, he just wants them replaced because he believes the post has been compromised and the latch I believe he does not like
