I am writing in reference to Case ID# ***.The customer paid for lunch at the Dupont Italian Kitchen with his *** *** credit cardThe bill for his meal came to $The server ran the credit card for that amountShe gave the slip to the customer to sign and, if he chose, to add a
tipThe credit card slip showed the actual bill amount of $70.50.The customer then checked his cell phone and said that his *** *** account showed a pending amount that was 20% more than the bill for his meal (about, as I recall, $84.60)The customer was upset and demanded to speak with the manager.I went to the customer's table and explained that the amount showing in his account was "pending" but not chargedHe would only be charged the amount he wrote on his credit card slip - in other words, $plus whatever amount he opted to add for the server's tipMy understanding, at the time, was that this was a feature added by *** *** when customers purchased services where tips are added (salons, restaurants, taxis, etc)I explained again that the amount he was reading from his cell phone was "only an authorization" and not the actual amount he would be charged by *** *** - in essence, the 20% additional authorization was a safeguard against the customer unwittingly exceeding his credit limit with a tip over the amount of the bill. Please see attached response for additional information
Complaint: ***
I am rejecting this response because:I am rejecting the response based on the factsAs I had stated in person, this is the ONLY restaurant where there was an additional 20% pending charge with *** ***If this is a policy from *** *** as he purports it to be, then what would explain the fact that NO OTHER restaurant where I had used *** *** incurred this chargeTherefore, I reject his explanation
Regards,

I am writing in reference to Case ID#***.I am sorry that the customer is still not happy with our response. As far as the customer's concerns, we want him to know that the WHAT HE HAS REFERRED TO AS CHARGES were only AN AUTHORIZATIONIf he had added a 25% tip on his credit card slip, he would not have noticed on his cell phone a new authorization. This is what I did not know and have learnedI did not know that *** Company had installed a program that allows our Point of Sale system to authorize an additional 20% over the amount of the billThis feature is used to protect restaurants, salons, and hotels for tipping and other expenses they may occurAs a matter of course, when a consumer rents a car from a rental agency a higher amount is authorized than is ultimately chargedIf our customer would like to confirm that this is a feature *** installs automatically, I encourage him to speak with the company about "*** **." Their phone number is ***. The only thing that we could do, and have done is to disable a 20% AUTHORIZATION featureI hope that this explanation will be adequate for the customer and addresses his concerns
