Review: My bridal set was made by Pete B[redacted] at Dutcher Brothers in Philadelphia. Im divorced and was considering selling my ring set. I brought it back to the jeweler who made it and asked if he could give me an estimate for resale, and if he would be interested in buying it. We spoke a few days later once hed examined it, and he told me that it would be worth about $9,000. I told him that I thought that was too low. His alternative suggestion was to have a colleague bring it to New York City where it may be more saleable. The ring set consisted of an engagement ring with a center marquise (1.5 carat) and a trillion on either side (.75 carats each), set in platinum, and a platinum band made to fit the engagement ring setting. I left the set with Mr. B[redacted] to bring to New York. He told me again that he could only get about $9,500 for the set. He said a marquise isnt very popular or desirable and that a trillion was chipped (I was aware of the chip and had brought the ring to him years ago to reset the trillion, which was popping out of its setting). He told me the trillions were worthless since they could no longer be sold as a good set. Again, I told him that that was too low of a price and that Id rather keep the set. I let him know that Id be back in to pick it up, along with some rings Id had re-sized. When I talked to him the day I was to pick up everything, he told me that hed sold them and he asked me to bring the GIA certificate. He said Id told him to sell them and thats what hed done. I let him know that Id said at least two times that that wasnt enough for me to want to sell the rings. He said hed see what he could do about finding out who they were sold to.I went to his store and he insisted that hed sold them, and that there was no way to get them back. I told him several times to find out who hed sold them to, but he said that wasnt possible. He had no idea who theyd been sold to. He then told me that hed disassembled the engagement ring to sell off the center stone someone had already started cutting it down. None of it sounded like the truth since he kept adding to the story and never made an attempt to contact anyone (his colleague or the buyer), I wondered if he still had everything.I wasnt going to take his money, but he insisted that he didnt have the rings - Id have no rings and nothing in exchange for them. I did take the $9,000. I did not give him permission to sell the set and I gave nothing in writing to authorize the sale. I still have the original diamond certificate for the center stone Mr. B[redacted] made a copy when I dropped off my rings. I called the GIA lab to find out if the stone could be traced by its barcode. I was told that that could only be done if it had been stolen. This was so underhanded and unprofessional.I have a written appraisal (prior to bringing the set to Mr. B[redacted]) for the engagement ring only was documented at $43,500, consisting of the engagement ring and the wedding band. As proof, the GIA certification and appraisal both note that the center diamond was a marquis stone, 1.51 carats, VS1 clarity, and color D. The appraisal includes the trillion diamonds at 1.5 carats, but I do not have a GIA certificate for those only the center stone was brought to Mr. B[redacted] to be set. He added the trillions, made the setting, and made the wedding band to fit.Desired Settlement: Based on value
