This letter is in response to the above numbered complaint filed by [redacted] with your Bureau.  He seems to be confused by the principles of our product warranty.    [redacted] purchased a long block engine to be built by an individual or other shop, which in turn...

brought the job to us to do. I am unsure as to how many companies or individuals are involved in this transaction, as I spoke to no less than three during the time I was attempting to build the engine for [redacted]. Initially, I did not even have [redacted]’s name, but did get his old motor delivered to my shop in the back of a personal truck of an employee of another boat shop in our area.  Once I was able to identify and connect with [redacted], he approved my estimate to build a long block for him. Upon completion of what we had discussed, it became apparent [redacted] did not have any of the accompanying parts, such as gaskets that were necessary to have him a running motor.  I asked him to bring me the associated parts that were necessary to have a completed long block assembly. After our numerous requests that he bring us the intake manifold, the oil pan, front and rear covers, and valve covers, and telling him he must purchase a new oil pump and gaskets from us (so we could close the motor up) in order to receive our normal warranty on the build. He never brought any of these parts. NO ONE CAN OFFER A WARRANTY ON A MOTOR THEY WERE NOT ABLE TO COMPLETE. Once [redacted] explained how many individuals were working on his boat and motor, and he expressed the desire to have others complete what was started in our shop, I realized he expected me to only do part of his rebuild, but wanted me to warranty the entire build as if I had completed the entire job and was responsible for its successful operation.   I told [redacted] he had to have a certain set of gaskets to install what we had done to what he still had in the boat (to my knowledge) and that I could in no way warranty the work of others.  I was not informed of how many professional mechanics were involved and how many hobbyist-type mechanics were involved in the build. I completed what was arranged with our shop. I ordered him the necessary gaskets to align and seal it to the accompanying parts in his boat.  [redacted] was required to pay cash after he became threatening and insulting at my shop.  My 35+ year history with customers has taught me this type of behavior many times leads to a cancelled check or disputed credit card charge. [redacted] received everything he paid for at my shop and should check with the last mechanic he used to assemble everything in his boat for what kind of warranty he could expect to have on the completed engine.  This situation became accusatory and revealed his request to not be as he originally represented it to us.   [redacted]
