EcoStar Remodeling Reviews (1)

Review: EcoStar replaced our roof in Nov 12. As we store things in the attic, I asked if we should put tarps down up while the roof was being replaced. Was told by owner no - his crew would clean up. That didn't happen and the attic was a mess! Have had EcoStar back four times for problems since they put the new roof on. 1) Gutter guards shoved up under shingles so end of shingles were curled up. 2) Huge gaps on inside of attic near peak - shingles clearly visible (not fixed - was told "it could have been done better but it's ok by EcoStar owner) 3)Severe condensation in attic from bathroom venting up in attic - had never had a problem before in the ten years my husband and I owned the house until EcoStar replaced the roof. 4) EcoStar came out, spilt venting apart hoses apart, duck taped the part they split hoses off from and stuck them up near new vent opening. Problem of condensation is worse, they cut the hole way to large and too close to the end of the plywood weakining the plywood, and split the plywood sheet almost in half with nails. 5) Plywood around venting pipe up from basement and first floor bathroom cut extremely close to edges of plywood and looks like workers had just started the hole with a saw then kicked it out - wood is badly splintered and the hole is way to large.

After the second floor venting issue, which is the fourth time EcoStar responded for problems, I let the owner know immediately via text message before his workers had even pulled away from our home that the repair was not well done. We never heard anything back in any way shape or form. My husband and I then contacted another contractor who came out and looked at the problem areas and gave us an estimate of what it would cost to fix the situation right. He also informed us that if anyone went up ont he roof for any reason (clean gutters, etc) if they stepped on the wood in the problem areas, they'd come through extrmely easy which would subject us to a possible lawsuit.

At first, EcoStar was willing to pay for us to have another contractor come to properly repair the roof but then balked. The owner stated he would have his crew come back and do repairs but we no longer trust or have faith in EcoStar. He also cited Paragraph 10 of the contract I signed which states "Any and all expenses incurred by buyer(s), as the result of hiring another contractor or other person to correct such defects shall be the sole responsibility of the buyer(s). We have had them back four (4) times - isn't that enough to justify hiring a new contractor when the work done by EcoStar continues to be shoddy? We have all email traffic between EcoStar and us trying to resolve this matter in an amicable fashion. I also saved the text message and have pictures of all but the gutter guard situation that I can provide if required.Desired Settlement: Would like them to pay for what it is going to cost us to have another insurance company recommended contractor come out to properly repair EcoStar's shoddy workmanship (have estimate from new contractors that I did forward to EcoStar).

Response:

1. This person has a roof that meets all building codes and manufacturers specifications.

2 Running her existing bathroom exhaust vents through the roof was not part of her contract. We had no obligation to do this and we even did so at no charge to her.

3. We agreed to run the vents for her at no charge in order to accomodate her.

4. She has not had us out 4 times for this problem.

5. Had she asked us to run these vents at the time we installed her new roof, we could have done it more neatly. Using a saw to cut existing decking is impossible to do perfectly.

5. We have offered to address this issue at no additional charge.

I am rejecting this response because: The venting was originally vented out the roof, EcoStar did not do so, the simply pointed the vent out the roof cap. They have been out to the house four times for different problems as the roofing job was not properly done. I am attaching pictures to enable you to see what I am talking about. I've also attached a copy of an email [redacted] sent at one point saying he was going to turn it over to his insurance company and then pulled back on the offer.

As to meeting specs - It's never been inspected by anyone - just looked at by EcoStar and and [redacted] who we would like to have do the work.

The problem still exists, we never had the problem before EcoStar replaced the roof, it's worse since EcoStar's repair, and if it had been done correctly in the first place, we never would have had the problem. Therefore, we completely and absolutely reject his response.

Response:

We are very sorry this consumer has this problem but it was created because the venting for the bathrooms that was done before we installed a new roof was done incorrectly. We simply tried to correct the problem without charge after she complained nearly 2 months after her roof was finished. We never charged her and did the best we could given what we had to work with.

1. Here is an estimate this customer got on Novenmber 1, 2012, more than a week before we even started on her roof, indicating the problem was existing.

2. The second photo is how the exhaust vent was run before we installed her new roof.

This consumer's old roof failed completely after only 10 years because of the way the old exhaust vents were run as is obvious in the photo.

I mentioned filing an Insurance claim, only to see what she would do and her response was to get this other company to give her an estimates for nearly $4000 because she thought she was going to have a payday. I think it's very clear this consumer is simply attempting to extort money from our company using the threat of a diminished rating with the Revdex.com as a pressure tool.

We have forwarded all correspondence to our company Attorney for his recommendation on how to proceed and will not be responding to an additional requests for information regarding this "Claim".

Review: [redacted]

I am rejecting this response because: the roof did not fail because of the venting. We never had a drop of water or problem in the attic prior to "Sandy". The price went up because of the work around the black pipe in the picture where it looks like a hole was started to be cut then "kicked out" t resulting in the wood is serverely splintering and cracking. [redacted] even said "it could have been done better but it's ok". And, where the hose venting was put in, nails were hammered in that have split the board in two.

We also are consulting an attorney as to legal routes of resolution as this work is sloppy and extremely unprofessional. My husband and I have made every effort to resolve this issue without damaging the reputation of EcoStar but we will not pay for someone else's lack of knowledge ([redacted] told me he had jsut gotten into the roofing area in expanding his business) and serious lack of ability in the carpentry and roofing area of his "crew".
