Elgot Kitchens, Inc. Reviews (2)

Review: Customers contracted with Elgot to complete certain renovations to their apartment on the Upper East Side. Elgot originally provided a written timeline listing 10 weeks as the estimate to complete the job. Once the contract was signed, Elgot provided a completion date 22 weeks out (January - May). Elgot blew past that date, too, and ultimately did not complete the work until early September (almost 40 full weeks). The job was inappropirately staffed and the work is not done in a workmanlike manner. A different contractor ultimately had to come in to finish the project and to redo certain work that had been done in a faulty manner. It has cost huge amounts of money to correct Elgot's breach and Elgot has never once been apologetic. We have tried to resolve the matter several times, and they are only willing to make small monetary concessions for the massive delays and costs we suffered. It is truly an appalling way to do business.Desired Settlement: Elgot has done enough damage and caused us enough pain. We would like them to release us from the amount remaining on the contract and to leave us alone. It is as if they have no understand of the suffering caused by their inappropriate staffing and lack of coordination of our job. It affected our lives greatly and the fact that they seek any money whatsoever from us at this point is insulting.

Business

Response:

Delays were caused by a number of factors, including unforeseen job conditions(large holes in walls hidden behind cabinets, leaking plumbing pipes and valves which had to be replaced, etc), client change orders and faulty materials ordered and supplied by client from unreliable vendors. Our work was completed in a workmanlike manner. The client was charged $2500.00 by a contractor hired by the client to repair work completed by Elgot as well as work completed by a decorative contractor. The client owes Elgot in excess of $30,000.

Consumer

Response:

I have reviewed the response made by the business in reference to complaint ID# [redacted], and have determined that my complaint has NOT been resolved because:

The business continues to claim that it bears no responsibility for taking roughly twice as long as promised to claim that it had completed work, which work was never actually completed in a workmanlike manner the business's actions were and continue to be in violation of New York State and City home improvement consumer protection laws, as well as statutory and common law relating to fraud, breach of comtract, breach of warranty and various other violations of the law. These consumer protection and fraud laws exist for the very purpose of preventing the abusive practices of contractors in cases like the present one.The business also damaged parts of the consumer's just-purchased apartment where no work was planned or completed. The business's own employees have indicated that the four-plus month delay was caused in part by another project the business was completing simultaneously on "72nd street." The business's other projects led to unreasonable staffing of the jobsite. A vast documentary record has now been compiled and reviewed, containing hundreds of photographs, admissions of fault by the business and its agents and employees, and pleas from the consumer to better staff the job in order to achieve completion by the contracted date (the majority of which were simply ignored by the business).

Response:

Elgot completed 1 kitchen and 2 bathroom renovations for [redacted]. The latest is the 3rd or 4th complaint about Elgot to the Revdex.com (one of the complaints was from [redacted]'s lawyer). [redacted] continues to make false accusations against Elgot and is damaging Elgot's reputation. Elgot's attorney and the client's attorney have had communications about the matter and the case is in litigation.Elgot has been trying to reach a reasonable settlement with [redacted]. He continues to be unreasonable and does not want to pay more than $5,000 to settle the matter. [redacted] owes Elgot in excess of $30,000.Elgot has been family owned and operated for the past 70 years. As you will find in the Revdex.com records, Elgot always works with a client to resolve a dispute.Kind regards,Ellen E[redacted]

Response:

I have reviewed the response made by the business in reference to complaint ID# [redacted], and have determined that my complaint has NOT been resolved because:The business continues to bemoan the fact that a complaint has been filed against it rather actually attempt to fix the problem. The business prepared a contract that fails to comply with New York law and Elgot cannot grasp that it must perform its obligations under contracts in just the same way that consumers must perform theirs. Elgot is even suing us for defamation for writing reviews and complaints with the Revdex.com.My opinion is that Elgot is not an honest company and that consumers in New York should be educated so that they do not do business Elgot, now or ever.-[redacted]

In order for the Revdex.com to appropriately process your response, you MUST answer the question above.

Sincerely,

No matter what you do, do not hire Elgot. These people were hired to renovate an upper east side apartment for our client and originally provided a written timeline of 10 weeks to complete the job. It ultimately took them almost 40 weeks to complete the job. In the meantime, Elgot fraudulently signed into our building's sign-in sheet to claim that workers were at the site when in fact they were not. When we complained, they stopped fraudulently signing the sign-in sheet, but they still didn't send any more workers! Worst of all, Elgot just served us with papers asking us for more money for the neglient and late work that they provided. We wrote to Elgot to attempt to resolve the situation amicably but they refused. No matter what you do, don't do what we did--DO NOT hire Elgot. You will regret it.
