***SEE DOCUMENT ATTACHED***This letter is in response to ***'s complaint regarding our debit/credit card authorization processIt is my understanding that *** is frustrated regarding the length of time her funds were held during and after her visit to Emergency Veterinary Hospital. When a
client visits Emergency Veterinary Hospital (EVH) they are asked to provide an authorization for paymentThis can be in the form of a debit card, credit card, check, or even cashWhen a debit or credit card is used EVH places an authorization on their card for the estimate of services that they are presentedThis authorization locks in their funds to ensure that we receive our payment for services renderedOnce the client is released from the hospital the authorization is pushed through and hard charged to the client's bank accountThis authorization 'hold' can continue to be held on their account anywhere from 1-days depending on the bank the client usesEVH does not make the decision to release the hold on their card, their bank does and EVH has no control over thatI have provided the definition of a debit/credit card hold for possible easier understanding:"An authorization hold (also card authorization, preauthorization, or preauth) is the practice within the banking industry of authorizing electronic transactions done with a debit card or credit card and holding this balance as u navailable either u ntil the merchant clears the transaction (also called settlement), or the hold "falls off." Debit card authorization holds can fall off the account (thus rendering the balance available again) anywhere from 1-days after the transaction date depend I ng on the ba nk's policyCredit card holds may last as long as days, dependi ng on the issu ing bank."Our Visa/MasterCard machines are settled every night at 11:pmAfter that time, it is up to the client's bank to release those funds at their discretionI do not feel that EVH is responsible for waiving any of ***'s bank fees because the release of funds is out of our control. If you have further questions please feel free to reach me at 541-746-
