I paid a retainer to Excel Builders to complete a proposal for our basement Detailed drawings and ideas to them of what we wanted When we were presented the proposal by the Designer (Christine ***) and Owner (Trent ***), when I pointed out errors in the proposal, Trent acknowledged that he "dropped the ball" and that they needed to go back over the numbers There were things missing we wanted and they didn't include, and they had errors between their drawing and the wording of the proposal Even with that, the price was significantly higher with less features than other proposals we received for our basement When they came back with an updated proposal, the only thing which changed was the labor cost (total cost reduced by 15%) This is unsettling as they took two weeks to develop the original proposal which was clearly an attempt to overcharge This caused me to lose trust in them and coupled with the poor quality proposal that did not evidence attention to detail, I

Revdex.com:

November 13, 2017 To Whom It May Concern: It is unfortunate that we were unable to work things out with Mr. [redacted], and that it has come to a no win situation. We strive to give our best effort and put honest hard work into everything we do On Monday October 2, 2017 during our proposal, some...

errors in the detailed proposal did arise, and I did admit to Mr. [redacted] that there were some issues on my end which affected the attention to detail in the proposal. However, I asked Mr. [redacted] to allow me to make the corrections and send over the revised proposal later that day; Mr. [redacted] did agree to those terms. Revisions were completed on Monday October 2nd, including the changes that were requested by the [redacted]’s to fit within their budget, and were immediately emailed to Mr. [redacted], and followed up with a phone call. The changes included, removal of cabinetry, removing all tile, adding in a few details that were missing, and a few other minor tweaks. The next morning on October 3rd. we received the email from the [redacted]’s, requesting additional revisions before moving forward, which I worked on that evening and early the following morning, and had planned to send over On Wednesday October 4th. However, to our surprise, Mr. [redacted] emailed back on Wednesday October 4th, and said he had received lower bids, and felt they did not want to move forward with Excel Builders, based on lack of communication, and would like a refund. Now it is unclear why Mr. [redacted] concluded that I was attempting to “over- charge” him based on his comment, "this is unsettling as they took two weeks to develop the original proposal which was clearly an attempt to over-charge". When we present the design process and proposal, we strive to present a good, solid preliminary proposal, and then move forward with revisions until all parties agree before moving to a contract. I have discussed with my designer, Christine, regarding her conversations with [redacted], and she did not guarantee a refund; this is also not solely her call to make. The design retainer that was signed does not state that a refund would be given, but that a credit will be given upon moving forward with the project with Excel Builders. As I stated above, it is unfortunate that this happened. I am the type of person that believes a phone call or a face to face meeting can settle most disagreements before they get to this point. In fact, we made the effort to arrange a meeting with Mr. [redacted] or conduct a telephone conference to discuss his grievances in the hopes of coming to an amicable resolution. However, Mr. [redacted] responded by email, stating that is was not worthy of a conversation. Resolving any issues Mr. [redacted] had with our work product and/or his design retainer was made quite difficult due to his refusal to communicate with me and/or my designer outside of emailing us to demand a refund as well as threaten our credibility, if he did not receive an immediate refund. Mr. [redacted] has not been willing to meet with me or hold a telephone call to discuss his retainer and how we might be able to come to an amicable solution. Therefore, I will not be refunding his design retainer. Sincerely, Trent [redacted] Trent [redacted] Owner
