Review: Since my wife, daughter, mother-in-law and friends frequently do business here, my wife purchased a Gift Certificate for $100 for a friend. She gave her credit card and not thinking anything wrong, she took the receipt without looking at it along with the Gift Certificate indicating $100. When I was paying bills a few days later I noticed a charge of $108.38 from Fabulous Hair and Beauty. My wife found the receipt and noticed that they charged her tax for the Gift Certificate. She called the establishment several times and always got someone saying that the manager and/or [redacted] were not there. I walked over, approximately three minutes form my apartment, and the [redacted] was sitting there. I told her that she may have mistakenly charged my wife tax for a Gift Card also explaining, as mentioned in the The New York State [redacted] website, that you do not pay sales tax on Gift Certificates because it is just a transfer of money and that the person using the gift card was subject to sales tax because they are paying for the service. The [redacted] wouldn't listen and said that because my wife used a credit card she had to charge her sales tax; so that means that if my wife used cash she would not have been charged sales tax. How about the person using the Gift Card? I'm sure they're going to charge her tax also. Where is this money going? The [redacted] said she wouldn't charge a customer with a gift certificate tax - I didn't believe her. At this point I knew I wasn't going to get anywhere with this dilemma and told her that she illegally charged my wife sales tax and that losing $8.38 isn't going to make me lose sleep but I hope it was enough money for her losing my family and friends as customers.Desired Settlement: The $8.38 won't put us into bankruptcy and a refund of the this overcharge would be nice - along with an apology but, knowing that their practice of charging tax for Gift Certificates, and to only people using credit cards, is going to change, that would be satisfying enough.
