I am responding to a letter I received from you on 10/13/17. Jeff [redacted] purchased a Heatilator SC60 from Fireside Hearth and Home and it was installed on 5/5/2016. We then installed the Air Tight Doors on 5/11/17. The total purchase price was $4876. I received a VM from Mr [redacted] and I...

returned his call on 5/10 at 11:55. When he called me back we discussed his concerns. He said the unit was not putting out enough heat to heat his home and he felt that the sales person that sold him the unit Lied to him. I explained to him that the unit he purchase was rated to heat but there are many factors that determine how much heat a unit puts out. I agreed to send a tech to his house to check the unit out and see if there was anything physically wrong with the unit. The tech went out and checked out the unit and determined that the unit was installed properly. He said it looked like the unit was over fired slightly but seemed to be in good condition. I left messages for Mr. [redacted] on at least two separate occasions but had not heard anything back. I was willing to upgrade him to a more efficient unit for the difference in price which is about $2000 I will contact him Today to try to resolve the situation.

Initial Business Response /* (1000, 5, 2015/11/13) */
Fireside Hearth & Home installed the fireplace on 8/20/15. Once the roof on the house was completed we returned on 9/18/15 and put the cap on the chimney. We received a text message from the customer on 9/28/15 stating "Just wanted to...

let you know that the chimney is leaking now that the cap has been installed. I think they'll have to come back out and look at it". We sent our installer to the house on 9/29/15 to examine the chimney cap for leaks. The wood and pipe around our chimney cap was completely dry and there was no evidence of a leak. While we were there we inspected the attic for evidence of leaking and our installer found very wet wood and boards around the flashing area where the roof line meets the chimney. This condition was caused by the contractor who installed the roof on the house. Our installer took pictures of the area that was leaking for our job file. We told the homeowner what we had found and that we re-caulked everything just to be on the safe side. The homeowner explained that he had previously had a leak at the flashing, but had all that fixed and that he hadn't heard or seen any more water. We told the homeowner that if he needed anything else to please let me know and that if there were any other water leak issues that we would schedule a time to have him and the roofer present and we would do a water test to determine the exact area where the water was coming in at. On Saturday October 24th we received another text message from the home owner stating that the chimney cover was still leaking. On Monday, October 26th we called the homeowner to schedule a time to go back out and look at the chimney. The homeowner didn't answer the phone so we left a message. Shortly after that we received a text message stating that they had hired another contractor to fix the leak and the cost was $300. The homeowner sent us a copy of the bill along with photos of what had been done. What we observed from the photos was that the contractor they hired used an interior grade caulk on the chimney which requires and exterior grade caulk. We told the homeowner that we could not pay for the repair because we did not have the opportunity to address the issue with our own technicians; the repair was not done correctly; and we believe that the chimney cover was not the source of the water leak and that the roof may still be leaking.
As a company Fireside Hearth & Home installs 40,000 plus fireplaces a year and the issue of improper flashing at the roof line due to roofers or stone installers is far too common. Even though this area of work has nothing to do with our scope of work, we highly recommend the homeowner having this addressed with a professional who can identify and remedy the issue caused by the improper flashing to prevent further leaks and damage to their residence. As mentioned above we were, and still are, willing to participate in an investigation to identify the true location of the water infiltration with all parties present.
Initial Consumer Rebuttal /* (3000, 7, 2015/11/13) */
(The consumer indicated he/she DID NOT accept the response from the business.)
The reason we decided to hire a contractor to fix the leak caused by the cap install was because of the poor customer service we had gotten up until that point. After I contacted Ellen on 9/25 I was advised they'd be out there the next week. I called on 9/28 to inform it was raining and asked if they could come that day, I was told no. They arrived on 9/29 when neither of us were there to explain the situation...and we were never asked if we could come meet them. Later that day I received a text with pictures from their inspection only of the attic...coincidentally, not of the roof where leak was later determined to have been...and were advised they did it right, our previous contractor did it wrong. We spoke with Ellen the following day. When we advised her that the previous leak had already been fixed months prior and it was a pretty big coincidence that day after their install the chimney started leaking again, she advised if we wanted them to come back out to the house we'd have to pay. Pay for them to do a water inspection!? How could they be so sure they didn't cause the leak when they didn't do a water test during their follow up inspection? It was due to this poor customer service and finger pointing that we decided to pay someone else to fix it. I had zero faith that Ellen would handle the matter objectively. It's very surprising that a company that installs 40,000 fireplaces a year has such mediocre customer service skills. One can't help but think they are more concerned with making a dollar rather than standing behind their product and/or service. Very disheartening. I will never recommend this company to anyone.
Final Business Response /* (4000, 9, 2015/11/17) */
Fireside Hearth and Home will be issuing a check in the amount of $300.00 to reimburse the customer for the work performed by their roofer. I spoke with Mr. [redacted] on 11-17-15 and informed him of this.
Thanks

Review: A prepayment of $175 was required for service call to resolve bird infestation in ducts of gas fireplace. It is glass enclosed and live birds get in there and eventually die because they cannot get out. 2 24 16, serviceman came out,got live bird out, it flew around my bedroom defecating everywhere, curtains, floors, bed linens, furniture and I had to clean extensively.

My towel was used to swat at the bird to catch it. If they knew live bird was in the fireplace, why did serviceman come with no net or proper equipment to catch bird? Another one of my towels was used to stuff actual vent, until they could come back with proper ladder height and part. The original service call advised them of the purpose of the call and that the vent cap is outside of our house,15-20 feet high. And, yet, they came unprepared without proper ladder nor part?

Several calls have been made, messages left and, to date, no courtesy of return call,no end in sight. Birds continue to fly in, flap around and screech and eventually die. The stuffed towel is loosening probably due to weight of dead birds? The sounds of dying birds is so disturbing for my children, my pet and my husband and I. My husband did get through to Sue P[redacted] once, who told him "she forgot about us" and "I know exactly the part to fix issue" We still, have not heard back and that was over 2 weeks ago.

Please, please intervene. We are helpless, we don't know how to fix, nor would we try because it is a gas fireplace and we are not knowledgeable to deal with dangerous gas and electrical issues. Also, fireplace was working before they came, but serviceman disengaged it when he put my towel in the vent. Now we don't have working gas fireplace and bird infestation continues. We are out $175. We have been taken advantage of and this must stop. We want our job to be serviced professionally and properly. I cannot bear the sounds of dying birds in the vents. Please help us.Desired Settlement: We want our glass enclosed, gas fireplace in working order once again. We want the bird infestation in the vents corrected. Birds are getting in from outside of vent and finding their way into the glass enclosed fireplace. Please help us get this done professionally, properly and before more birds get in there and die. Please help us.
