Five Star Painting, Inc. Reviews (2)

Five Star Painting did a great job for us painting three room. They finished ahead of time, did an excellent job covering imperfections in the walls, and charged a fair price. I will definitely hire them again soon to paint the rest of the house!

Review: I hired 5 star Painting to power wash and stain my deck. (12'x20') They worked for me previously and I was very pleased with them. They arrived and the gentlemen who did the the deck last time dropped off a young man (30 years old) to do the work. I was not aware that an assistant would be doing the work. The young man power washed my deck for more than 3 hours. There was no oversight from the man I thought I had hired. The next day the assistant arrived in his own truck so I didn't see the boss at all. I was shocked at the dark color as I had requested he use the same color he had previously. The young man stained the deck by applying the stain with a pad as opposed to a brush. After it was done I saw that knots in the wood had become visible and were now black, darker than the dark stain. So I have many black knots visible which were not visible previously. There were also lot of black blotches in other places. So it did not look good and there was still mold between the boards. However, the most serious problem is that the boards seems to have lifted up at the edges so the deck is no longer even. It is unnerving to walk across. I suspect this was caused by the excessive power washing. Not only is it uncomfortable to walk on, it could cause someone to trip. I met with the boss on Saturday September 28 re my complaints and he did get rid of some of the black blotches that were not over the knots in the wood But it still looks bad and the color is uneven. But my main concern is the uneven boards. They were even before this. I see no solution but replacing the deck. There is still mold between some of the boards. There was also an issue with my power outlets in the front and rear of the house. The assistant told me he had power the day before. He told the boss that he didn't so I don't understand why the difference in what he told me and what he told his boss. This whole thing has been very upsetting to me as I feel that if the man I hired had done the work it would be fine.Desired Settlement: Because of uneven boards I don't see an alternative to tearing the deck down and replacing it. If the young man had had more oversight perhaps this would have been prevented. But I am now left with what I feel is an unacceptable and potentially dangerous deck.

Five Star Painting Inc. responses to complaint with [redacted]

We have tried to make [redacted] happy but there seems to be some in accurate statements she has made. She said that I was not supervising my worker. I was there at the start that day and had check on him again. He is experience worker and I felt he can handle the job which he did. She as failed to mention the age of the deck. She said that she was selling the house and wanted to get the deck to look better.

First we only charge her 428.00 for labor and material. We power washed her deck and around her house (at which we did not charge for). We stained her deck about 4 year prior with solid stain and at that time the deck was in bad shape, the wood was dry and spitting. This past year when we started the deck the wood was twisting, warping and splitting. We had to remove the solid stain to get deck prepared to apply an oil stain to put some moister back into deck.

The day we started [redacted] showed my worker and I the deck which had green algae and dirt she wanted power washed and then stained. I left my worker to power wash the deck and [redacted] then had my worker power wash other areas around the house. We first had to remove a table and picnic benches that had been on deck. We don’t know how long they had been on deck which plays a big factor on wood condition. Between snow, ice, rain, and sun will damage wood badly.

The next day my worker went back to sand the deck, to make it as smooth as possible. I went back later in the afternoon to see if everything was going good but I didn’t tell [redacted] that I was there. We used [redacted] timber oil stain. We used a pad to stain for better coverage and less spattering that can get on house. I had gone over in the afternoon some time to check on my workers progress and did not see [redacted].

[redacted] contacted us that there were some problems with the deck a day or two later. I went over and she pointed out some knots on wood that were darker than the rest of the deck. Also some spot under a post and some spots in between the deck floor that was not stained as dark. I personally went back the next day and took care of the thing on deck. She was not happy with the brown color we used. She wanted a solid stain and explained that using the oil base stain will give moister back into the deck. Also she said the color look black. We look at her neighbors’ deck which was black and she agreed that hers was brown.

”Decks take a lot of punishment over a single season. The flat surface of a deck responds to water, snow, ice, and rain that can dwell and sunlight can damage boards because there's no overhead protection. Over time, nails can partially work their way out of deck floorboards. Boards will warp, twist or crack, dirt and dead leaves can accumulate between the floor boards and bird droppings, and dirt and pollution can stain and discolor the finish. Mildew growth, loose treads on the stairs, ponding and wobbly railings can happen.”

We feel that the only thing we did wrong was the apply the wrong color. If [redacted] is really unhappy with the color then she can use the $428.00 that she was to pay us, to get another contractor to chamge the color. I do not feel we should replace the deck.
