Five Star Roofing & Masonry Reviews (%countItem)

Five star did work on our home last summer (less than a year ago) and we have significant concerns with it. The job consisted of caulking around the Stonetile on the front of our house ***).

We believe 5 star misrepresented themselves as experts in Stonetile. We recently learned from the *** that 5 star used the wrong caulking on our home. The correct caulking is ***, as per ***). If 5 star was an expert in Stonetile, as they represented themselves, they should have used the correct caulking. This could have been easily found by 5 star on the *** website if they had any questions about what product to use. They also used incorrect procedures when applying the caulking. The correct procedure is to clean the original caulking and apply a thin coat of the correct caulking *** over top (for adhesion purposes). They did not clean the previous caulking.

The quote and invoice we received from 5 star stated they would/had used *** on our home, which is not a recommended product for Stonetile. When in contact with 5 star recently they informed us that they did not use ***. Instead they informed they used ***, which is also not a recommended product for Stonetile. 5 star made a unilateral decision to substitute the caulking on our quote and did not inform us. We did not approve of these changes. Was there a price difference? Why the change? We believe this change was a breach of the contract we had with 5 star. We asked for receipts for proof of what was actually used on our home. We were given a receipt with some areas blacked out. We are leery of this and do not trust them, given everything to date. We also asked if this work was sub-contracted out and have not received a response to date. We can forward this information when we get a response.

In less than a year the caulking applied to our home is already pulling away from the stonetile in some areas (pictures taken as proof). This work is still under workmanship warranty and there has been no offer from 5 star for remedy. We have given 5 star the opportunity to do the right thing: to provide a refund and remove the caulking. *** also offered to help facilitate this. However, after weeks of correspondence with 5 star (mostly one sided from us and ***) 5 star responded with a no. We are seeking the help of the Revdex.com to receive a full refund, as we believe 5 star misrepresented themselves, was negligent, breached the contract, and did poor work on our home. ***, as true experts of Stonetile, have agreed to correspond with the Revdex.com if helpful in this matter. They reviewed the work of 5 star and can attest to the wrong caulking, procedure, and workmanship.

Five Star Roofing & Masonry Response • Jun 22, 2018

This customer has been in contact with us.

We provided a quotation to the previous homeowner when he had an offer on the property. The new owner took over the quotation, which was issued in their name and we proceeded with the work. At no time did Five Star Roofing & Masonry represent themselves as an expert in the Stonetile product.

There was no warranty on the tile product on their home at the time of the work, so we did not void the warranty on the product. No warranty was provided on the work we completed.

The produce we used is an acceptable product for the application. The work was completed a year ago and the customer was satisfied with the project.

Now a year has passed, the homeowner wants to apply another coating to the tile surface and this product is not compatible with the product we used. We were not notified of the future application, and had no ability to meet the product recommendations, a year in advance.

In an effort to assist the homeowner, an offer was made, which was declined.

WE WERE NOT NOTIFIED OF THE FUTURE APPLICATION, AND HAD NO ABILITY TO MEET THE PRODUCT RECOMMENDATIONS, A YEAR IN ADVANCE OF THE APPLICATION.

I am rejecting this response because:

5 Star verbally informed us that they had expertise in Stonetile, otherwise we would not have hired them. We spoke with them a few times directly before getting the work done. They assured us that they had lots of experience doing this specific work. The person who did this quote for us and who I spoke with was ***. 5 star should have informed us if this was not the case and turned down the job. We were informed (by a representative of ***) that 5 star used the wrong caulking when looking into options for having our Stonetile cleaned. There are a few water marks under our windows. One option presented is a treatment they are referring to. At that time we also noticed the caulking 5 star applied was starting to pull away in less than a year. Some pictures have already been sent to the Revdex.com and 5 star. If proper procedures and the correct caulking was used it should not be pulling away from the Stontile in less than a year. This work is still under the 1 year workmanship warranty in the province of Nova Scotia. 5 star is the only company claiming the *** caulking they used is acceptable for use on Stonetile. We recently forwarded the Revdex.com correspondence from *** stating the only caulking they recommend is ***. They also stated they could not recommend use of ***. If 5 star is not an expert in Stonetile, as they now just stated in their message to the Revdex.com, how can they say it is acceptable? Could 5 star please send along any evidence that this caulking has been tested and approved for use on Stonetile in our climate? Also, the technical representative for *** has given us information, which we forwarded to the Revdex.com, which shows they improperly used ***. Previous caulking should be removed before applying ***. 5 star put *** over the existing caulking. In their quote 5 star stated they would remove 1/3 to 1/4 of the faulty caulking and replace with ***. They covered over 90% of the existing caulking with a completely different caulking and did not inform us. 5 star made us an offer of $1500 on June 14, 2018 at 9:00am and gave us 4 hours to decide. Not only was this a very limited amount of time, it was not enough to even cover the cost of removal of the faulty caulking 5 star applied to our home. We have been quoted 2650 +HST for removal and 3000+HST to put the correct caulking on our home. We think it is more than fair for 5 star to give us a full refund, as it is going to cost us more than that to fix the work they did. It has been recommended to us that we remove the *** from our home in a timely fashion. We have been in contact with an expert in Stonetile who has agreed to speak with the Revdex.com about this matter. He has also agreed to testify in court in the matter, should this matter not be resolved via the Revdex.com.

Thank you for your help

I Hired Five Star Roofing to install a new roof on my home earlier this year. A quote was given and agreed upon. The roofing job began in late February/early March. After a few days it became noticable that the job was not being completed well. I contacted the company owner who come to my property himself and agreed that things were not being done properly. He then told me if I wanted them done, there would be an additional fee and he issued another quote. The job was resumed the third week of March 2018. The workers removed all my gutters and downspouts and attempted to install flashing and starter strip, but with inconsistent colours. It was also not installed according to industry standards. The faschia and drip edge work was very poorly done, with rotten wood in some places and incomplete in others. Some of the step flashing on the roof was reused and not replaced. I have not seen or heard from Five Star roofing since the third week of March, despite sending them several emails asking when and if they would be resuming the job. At this time, I have had no gutters, so water pooling around my home has become an issue and my garage door is now water damaged and needs replacement.

This has been passed along to *** who has tried a couple of times to get ahold of the homeower. We will be looking into this issue and provide a solution as quickly as possible. I will update this as soon as I have further information.

Revdex.com:I have reviewed the response made by the business in reference to complaint ID 12885130, and find that this resolution is satisfactory to me.

Although Five Star says that *** has tried to contact me, that is not true. He has both my email address and my phone number and there has been no attempt to contact me.

I will give this company a couple more weeks to get in touch with me and to repair and complete the roofing job, but if I have not heard from them by July 3 I will be looking for someone else to complete the job.

I have made 17 attempts since Oct 2017 to have 5Star come back to do repairs as my roof continues to leak less than a year after they did work.
Roof work and installation of new skylight was done in June 2016. In Sept when it rained again...we immediately still had leaks below the skylight box. I have now called 17 times to have action taken with many promises of "I will be out tomorrow" and it has not happened. In past 3-4 months I now have leaks around the chimney where they had replaced all the fascia boards and installed new caps on chimney. There is just a plain failure to act. We did withhold full payment last year (thank goodness) but I would like to actually have them fix the roof so it does not leak. I will never use them again after that.
