This truck ca me into our s hop with a comp laint of ove rheating while going up hillsWe brought the truck up to the shop to sta rt inspecting the unitThe radiator looked clea n on the outside,the coolant level was full, & there we re no signs of a ny major leaksWe did find one small leak at the water pump weep holeUpon inspection, t he top and bottom radiator hoses see med to be the same temperatureWhile unit was running, there was no sign of coo lant mov ing in the tank, no circulation of coolant;like a water pump not wo rking properly It is common knowledge in the trade that Cat engines are know n fo r wate r pump failures ca used by impeller slipping on the shaft under continuous work,as in going up hills.Beca use the unit was a with over 1.1million miles we asked the driver for history on the engine, but he was una ble to provide a ny informationWe ca lled the owner of the truck to get history on the t ruck We we re told he had only had t he truck for a year and he had no previous information on this unitWe asked if the water pump had been changed while it was in his possess ion, he stated it had notAt this time, we explained what we had found a nd to ld him it co uld be the water pump, that w ith no history we co uld not be complete ly sure that was the ca useThe t-stats seeme d to be ok due to the fact the upper and lower radiator hoses feel like the same temperatureThey would not if the t-stat had failed.We gave the truck ow ner an estimate for water pump replacement, he accepted the estimat e, and we performed the work agreed uponWe rechecked the new water pump was functioning properly and released the unit to the driverAfter leaving the shop, the driver found the unit was still running hot a nd returned to our s hop.We hooked unit to compute r to check temps comparing to tempsreflected by the ga uges on t he truck: they matc hed.We c hecked the coo lant f low in t he reservoir, we co uld see there was now coola nt circulation, where there was none when unit was first in our shopRechecked tempson rac!iato r hoses, this time.finding they we re degrees at radiator a nd degrees at engineWeta lked to the owner advising that it could be a P.lugged radiato r or the t-stats ha d fai led.At this tim.e, he asked if the water pump was just a waste of time and moneyWe expla ined that no, it was not because a water pump is a maintenance item and wit hout any history on an older truck with that many miles it --see attached

We expla ined that no, it was not because a water pump is a maintenance item and wit hout any history on an older truck with that many miles it --see attached
