Abusive, malicious and unprofessional nurses outweigh the few kind and knowledge nurses
My partner Dr *** * *** was a patient hereHe suffered horrble abuse, violations of standard of care and patient's rights by, and outright lies from, Nurses in the ER and ICU right in front of me
Staff in general were rude and some deliberately cruel; I can only assume a prejudice against his appearance and unemployment status, for they were downright surprised when I told them of his accomplishmentsÂ
After my complaints were verified by a supervising RN, some improvements were madeAnother supervisor and a patient advocate also spoke with me the next morningOne nurse  claimed erroneously  I had no right to his medical status and lab reports because a common law wife isn't a legal spouse  (the hospital had the legal documents stating that I am his health care proxy and  along with his signed directive that I be informed and consulted regarding every procedure or lab result)
Once the supervising RNs made clear to staff that yes, I was authorized to, and they were required to, provide status updates, they would not call as requested and when I called, I had go through the whole "check the chart and see you survivors notes" routine before information was released
He was denied the picc the doctor ordered on the first morning, to reduce the number of times his veins were punctured for frequent blood drawsThe nurses told us there was no picc team available (the supervising RN said they always have a picc team available)When I said if the doctor had ordered one, when would he get the picc, the nurse snapped, "he doesn't need one." He got the pic on the third day
He had no way to sanitize his hands after using the toilet or bedpanHis throat was dry and he had no way to drink water unless I brought it to him with their permissionThey did not clean the day old vomit from his hair and face; I did
The nurses would tell me that he wasn't permitted to have reading material and I would call up the policy for them to review, and after they read it, he was allowed his newspaper and booksThey didn't provide hygiene care for him until he was strong enough to shower on his own days laterNo wonder hospital infection rate is so high
We received erroneous information about his release and transfer and it wasn't until I said I would call my attorney that staff "remembered" there were actually decisions we could make rather than "you have no choice." Despite repeated requests, the treating physician didn't call me once during the horrific day stay
I would never consent to be treated here and would never permit a loved one to be without a family member's observation round the clockI must reiterate how shocked I am by the harsh insensitivity he as a patient and we as a couple enduredOne charge nurse commented to me, he's such a nice man and such an easy patientI responded in tears and explained what was happening and it was she who got the supervisor
