Review: We turned in 3 boxes of silverware and a Silver Tea/Coffee, creamer, and sugar, 2 big silver platters which held these items. Also a separate silver creamer and sugar container to [redacted] at his Portage WI Jewelery store to get estimates on the value. We were able to get the silverware back but he told us that he couldn't find the other silver items and he didn't know where they are. He kept the most precious items to me because the tea/coffee set, etc., was given to me by my mother as she went into an assisted living facility. These items were given to her by my great grandmother and my grandmother. I would please appreciate any help I can get on either getting these items back (which would be my first preference) or at least getting the value which to me is priceless. I have called him several times and he won't even return my phone calls. I have gone to his store in Portage and his staff say I need to talk to him. I am at loss at what to do. These items are precious to me and my family and he won't even have the professional attitude on calling to talk to me. He "doesn't know where they are." I believe these items were genuine silver and had a high price value. He returned all the 3 silverware sets mixed up in a box. In trying to put these back in the boxes lastnight I also realized that half of each set of silverware are missing.Desired Settlement: My first request is to get these precious items back. If this is impossible I would like some kind of money settlement. I am sure these items had great value.

Response:

Hi [redacted],

I apologize for not getting back to you sooner with this problem. Opening a new store just before Christmas and working on moving my coin store to the front of our old building. Plus I do coin shows so there's been some travel in there also.

[redacted] our company Collectors Choice buys and sells thousands of items be it coins or flatware, scrap gold. The last thing I wont to do is rip off some old lady or anyone for that matter.

The way this started was a gentlemen came into our store with three flatware sets in box to see if there was any value after look at the three sets there name Rogers/Oneida they were plated sets and I explained to him that this is the norm 9 out of ten sets I look at are plated and are good at the dining room table and that's about it. After going through everything we found a few odd pieces that were sterling and I weighed them told him what I could pay for them and also just lately I was approached by a customer of mine from Illinois who now purchased plate stuff at a $1.50 a pound. I told this gentleman that it was not much but it was an option for someone not wanting to use or keep this stuff because nobody up to this point would buy it. I offered $1 a pound, this person called the owner told her that there was a few small pieces of Sterling about $5 worth he told her that the rest was plated and if she wonted so sell it it was not much but a $1 a pound.

She said that would be fine now at the time I had only one scale for weighing by the pound a garden scale and it at the time was at my Sun Prairie Store and I told them that I would need to take this back to sun prairie to weigh or bring the scale to Portage and he could bring back at a later time. He told me it was no big deal just take back to sun prairie and call him with total. I told him the the wood boxes would be junk to me and I ask him if he wonted me to save and he said yes and that he would pick up later when he picked up money.

A day or two later I took back to Sun Prairie weighed and called the gentleman and told him I had some figure on the plated Flatware. A month plus later he calles and I tell him the figures and at this time hes says to me that she was thinking she would get $75 per set I told him with what I told you and your mom about it being $1 a pound that would of been 75 pounds plus per box and you would of had a hard time caring in all three boxes in to store at one time. He said that shes not going to go for it, so I said fine the box of plated silver was at Sun Prairie and I would bring back.

A few days later I bring back the box to Portage, I call and again leave message that its has here. Then a month pass and he shows up to pick up along with wood boxes that it came in.

Then a day or so I get a call that there was pitcher and paters and Im accused of being a bad person

All I can say is something that would of made me ten dollars and some change was turned into a hornet nest.

I have a scale at both locations now and the people sign off that the got payed after every transaction from now.

All I can say [redacted] I buy a lot of items through out a years time Ive been doing this since 1988 and this is the only complaint that Ive ever been aware of.

We have had a few Quacks in the Jewelry part of our business but this is the first for me in the Coin, Medal part of our business.

I hope this shed some light on this problem I do not know how to fix .

Sincerely

Consumer
