Mr*** dropped off his Chevy Trailblazer (VIN 1GNET13HXXXXXXXXX) on February 2, The vehicle had 100,miles on the odometerMr***'s original complaint was noise that increases with engine
speedUpon testing, we found more than one noise existed, and the loudest noise was coming from the front differential areaIt was noted that the customer had mismatched tires installed (see attached photos)The front differential had significant deterioration from driving on these mismatched tiresThe customer stated that he knew it was *** his vehicle but he didn't think it would be a problemHe further stated that the mismatched tires had been installed for many months
It is well documented within the automotive and tire industry that mismatched tires on AWD or 4WD vehicles create undo wear on the front differentialThe front differential on a Chevy Trailblazer is no exception and failures have occurred with as low as 50,miles
Both our Service Advisor, ***, and our manager, ***, explained to the customer that mismatched tires are not recommended from anyone, including General Motors*** further explained that - from the first drive after the tires were installed - damage was occurring to the drivetrain and that failure was inevitableEven if the mismatch is corrected, damage to some degree would already be done
The customer stated that it broke down in our shop, and we should cover the repairIt is our position that this failure was ready to occur due to prolonged tire mismatch REGARDLESS OF WHERE THE VEHICLE WAS AT THAT POINT IN TIME, and therefore, it is not our responsibility
The responsibility lies with the party who made the decision to install mismatched tires, despite numerous warnings from auto manufacturers, tires dealers, and repair professionals
