To Whom It May Concern,
Ms [redacted] contacted me regarding an applicant she had been dealing with who began...

every conversation they had with a threat that if she was denied an apartment, she would sue for discrimination. I advised Ms [redacted] that I would handle the applicant and she provided me with the necessary information.
I contacted the applicant, now known as Ms [redacted], to ask her for information she neglected to provide in the application. That information included the monthly income amount (our application clearly states on the first page, second bullet point that gross monthly income must be at least 3X the rental rate), and desired move in date. Ms. [redacted] provided me with her income amount, and expressed that she was looking to move "ASAP". I told her the first available I would have would be October 1st, and asked if that was soon enough. This was on September 9th. Ms [redacted] replied by saying that was not too late. I then informed her that we would let her know, once the application was processed.
On September 14th, Ms [redacted] contacted Ms [redacted] regarding her application. Ms [redacted] referred her to me. Ms [redacted] called while I was out of the office for meetings, and left a message asking that I contact her. Upon returning to the office, I sat down at my desk to a ringing telephone, Ms [redacted] was calling. I advised Ms. [redacted] that we were unable to approve her based on the amount of her income, as it was not even twice the rental rate, let alone three times as required. Ms [redacted] then proceeded to issue threat after threat, alleging I denied her based on her income source. Despite my attempts to calm her down and stress that she was denied based on income amount, not the source, she continued to issue threats, attempting to bully me into approving her. I advised her that I was completely aware of the Fair Housing laws, as were the owners, who are attorneys. I informed her that I attend Fair Housing seminars regularly, and that our application and its language are in full compliance. Each and every member of our staff, and any vendors on the property are educated on the Fair Housing laws. She continued on, threatening to call her attorney. I interrupted her and requested her attorney's contact information, as that would be the best way to handle this, as I could forward to him/her the signed application Ms [redacted] submitted, agreeing to the terms and conditions outlined therein. Ms [redacted] vehemently refused to provide the info, and continued threatening to sue. She advised me that she was getting ready to settle a "case" she already had with the "Department of Human Rights", and that she would file one against me as well. I am not sure if Ms [redacted] realizes that an administrative agency for the State of IL has no jurisdiction in the State of IN, but felt it was not the time to point that out to her. At that point, I told her the conversation was over, and should she wish to provide her attorney's contact info at any time, I'd be glad to take it and answer any questions he/she may have, and ended the call.
Ms [redacted]'s baseless claims of racism are not only inaccurate and offensive, but yet another desperate attempt to bully and intimidate. Our community is overwhelmingly minority, and our apartment community reflects that diversity. Our families include persons from no fewer than three nations outside of the US, African Americans, Hispanic, East Indian, Asian, Nigerian, Native American, and Caucasian, to name but a few. We have families of all sorts, from single parents to multi-generational all under one roof, varying orientations, and levels of ability. Income sources are as diverse as the ethnicity and race of our tenants. The common thread among our families is that each of them have met the criteria outlined in our application, which they all agreed to upon signing that application.
It is unfortunate that Ms [redacted] is being forced to vacate her current apartment in Chicago, but I fail to see how it falls upon me to find a resolution on her behalf. Ms [redacted] did not meet our eligibility requirements, and was denied based on that and that alone. I wish her nothing but the best in her quest to find suitable housing.
