Galyean's Garage Reviews (1)

Review: I first contacted Gayleans Garage when I was considering purchasing an automobile from a private seller in Galax, Va. I am a rural mail carrier living in WI. I contacted the post office in Galax, Va and asked if they could recommend a mechanic to look at a car I was considering purchasing. The supervisor at the post office referred me to Gayleans Garage. He said that Mark at Gayleans Garage was an honest and reliable mechanic. I asked Mark to look at a 1998 Subaru right hand drive mail vehicle for me and give me a report on the condition of the car so that I could make an informed decision on purchasing the said vehicle. Mark agreed to look at the vehicle and I contacted the seller and the seller agreed to take it to Gayleans Garage with the understanding that I would pay for Mark to inspect the vehicle and give me a report. Mark inspected the vehicle and called me and informed me that he only found two things wrong with the car. The two things were rust on the rocker panels and an oil leak that he was not sure where it was coming from. He said there was oil at the front lower part of the engine. I called the seller and told him I wouldn't purchase the car without knowing what or how bad the oil leak was. A few weeks later the seller contacted me and informed me that the oil leak was just a very minor leak. I called Mark at Gayleans Garage to verify that it was in fact only a very minor oil leak and Mark confirmed this. He said I should have no problem driving the vehicle back to WI. I asked Mark what I owed him for his service and he said nothing as he does this for people quite often. Based on Mark's report of a very minor oil leak I purchased the vehicle from the private seller. Within the first 3- 4 minutes of driving the car I realized that the AC did not work. Within 8-10 minutes of driving the car I found out the vehicle did not go from drive to reverse unless you put the car in park first. Within 18-20 minutes of driving the car we had stopped and then the car wouldn't start. The problem was a loose battery cable that my husband tightened and we proceeded on our way. The reason the battery cable was loose was because the battery was not being held down by anything. It moved back and forth on the shelf it sat on. Within 30 minutes of driving the vehicle we stopped again to purchase some Freon for the AC and there was smoke rolling out from under the hood. I asked a mechanic to look at it and he said the problem was that there was a major oil leak and the oil was dripping on the exhaust manifold as I was driving and when we stopped it was burning off. We wouldn't see this burning oil as we drove as all of the smoke was just blowing off behind us. You would only see the smoke when you stopped. We had to check the oil every time we stopped. We added 2 quarts of oil after driving the car 455 miles. The whole back of the car was oily from all this oil burning as we were driving. The vehicle was also hard to steer. We added some power steering fluid which seemed to help a little. Obviously I was not told the truth about the condition of this vehicle from Mark at Gayleans Garage. When I got back to WI I took the car to my mechanic. He told me that there was a bolt missing and a seal and that was why the oil was leaking. The shift cable was bad so that was why the car wouldn't go from drive to reverse without putting it in park first. The fan was broke and was hitting the belts which caused the belts to need replacing. The rack and pinion steering also needed to be replaced. This is why it was hard to steer. I have had to pay approximately $1850 to get this vehicle in proper working order. If Mark at Gayleans would have told me everything that was wrong with this car I would not have purchased it. I feel I was duped by this mechanic. There have been many other things that my husband has fixed as well. I could supply of list these items if needed.Desired Settlement: I have two desired outcomes. Ideally I would like for Gayleans Garage to have to pay for the repairs I had to pay for since Mark didn't tell me the truth about the condition of this vehicle that I asked him to inspect. I feel he was negligent in his duty as a mechanic to inspect the vehicle and give me a report of EVERYTHING that was wrong with the vehicle. Secondly I want my complaint on file so that if anyone looks this mechanic up they will see that they would be dealing with a less than honest person.

Response:

Pre-Purchase Inspection of a 1998 Subaru: In response, to the complaint ID: [redacted] has made about meand the inspection of the 1998 Subaru, yes, I did an initial inspection of the Subaru back in late July or early Aug.2013.But, first let me say that I am honored, that a person from another state could call our local Post Office and the supervisor would refer that person to us out of all the auto repair shops in our area. I have been in business for 38 years and I strive to have an honest, reliable and high quality of work reputation. For the most part we only survive in the auto repair business with having repeat business and loyal customers. I feel it speaks volumes to our credit that we were referred to, as having a good reputation. With that being said, let me respond to the accusations of being negligent and dishonest of the inspection of the Subaru. Virginia has in place a state vehicle safety inspection program for all registered vehicles in Virginia. I performed this vehicle safety inspection on this Subaru as if it were going to be registered in Virginia. Every point of inspection required by the Virginia vehicle safety inspection passed inspection, except for a hole in the floor pan. This concluded this part of the inspection. I then performed a visual inspection of the engine and transmission areas looking for leaks and other concerns of the vehicle. I informed her of the rust issues with the vehicle. The hole in the floorboard, (which would not pass Virginia's safety inspection) the rusted out rocker panel and a considerable amount of rust throughout the frame and suspension, although not to the point of distress, but rusty, In her complaint, she only mentioned the rocker panel. The other thing was the lower part of the engine was covered in oil and grime from what looked like years of buildup. I informed her that the engine needed to be washed off and driven to see where, or if, any leaks showed back up. She requested that I do that. Therefore, I pressure washed the lower part of the engine and engine cradle. I let the vehicle sit overnight on a clean place of the floor of our garage. The next day I inspected the underneath of the vehicle for any kind of leaks. There were no leaks of any systems containing fluids at that time. These fluid systems included the antifreeze, oil, brake fluid, power steering fluid, transmission fluid and washer fluid. Again, there were no fluid leaks at that time. That evening after work, I drove the Subaru for approximately 30 miles. While driving the vehicle, I was checking and paying attention to the drivability of the vehicle. The engine and transmission performed and operated properly. Also, the steering and suspension performed and operated properly. During my test drive, I weaved the vehicle back and forth. During that time, there was no looseness or stiffness in the steering nor were there any suspension problems felt. I also released the steering wheel in a straight stretch and the vehicle tracked in a straight line. There were no problems found at that time. During the test drive, I also operated the air condition system as well as the heating system. Both operated properly with very cold air on A/C and very hot air on heat. There were no problems with the A/C and heat systems at that time. I did not do any further inspection of the A/C or heating systems other than to see if they operated properly and they did at the time of my inspection. As she referred to, the vehicle sat for several weeks after my initial inspection. If the A/C system did have a slow leak in it, it would leak the Freon out and, of course, would not be cold. But, it was very cold at the time of my using the system on the test drive. I returned the Subaru to the garage that evening and once again parked it over a clean place of the garage floor. The next afternoon, I visually checked for any kind of fluid systems leaks. There were no fluid leaks of any kind on the floor under the Subaru. However, there were a few droplets of oil on the bottom of the front cover of the engine, but not to the point that they had dripped onto the floor at that time. This was a visual inspection only. I did not remove any covers to investigate the oil leak, because the oil leak was not severe at that time. As for the gearshift and starting problems she referred to, I moved the vehicle around the garage and parking lot several times while the vehicle was at our shop, plus driving the vehicle. Not once did I experience any gear shifting or starting problems of any kind. As for the battery, it had a strap on it when it was at our shop that was holding the battery snuggly in place. I do not know what happened to the strap after the vehicle left our shop. I also do not know about the conversation she had with the owner of the vehicle or what he conveyed to her. However, what I verified and conveyed to her was the engine does seem to have an oil leak at the front of the engine. I also conveyed to her that I had driven the vehicle approximately 30 miles and at that time, it seemed to be a slow leak. When she asked me if I thought the Subaru would make the trip from Galax to WI, my answer was "it might make it fine on the trip or it might break down before you make it out of Galax. It might make a good mail carrier vehicle or it might give a lot of problems. Nobody knows." That was my answer to her. Also, if a seal had been completely missing, it would have poured oil out at the shop before I ever washed the engine off. Now, I will say that a seal could have blown out on the trip to WI. However, it would still be there, just not sealing off the oil from pouring out. We spoke several times on the telephone during her interest in the Subaru. At one point, she asked me if I thought the Subaru was worth the seller's asking price. I chuckled and said "No, I did not think it was." She asked me what I would pay for this vehicle. I stated that even if were in the market to purchase a right hand drive vehicle, I would not buy this vehicle. Even though it ran and operated fine for a fifteen year old vehicle, I would not buy it, simply because of the rust issues. She stated the rust did not give her any concerns. I guess she was so intent on getting particular vehicle she didn't hear or want to hear my opinion on purchasing the vehicle, just the mechanical issues. But, at the time of my inspection, everything checked out okay. I am terribly sorry for her misfortune with the Subaru. However, I gave an honest and forthcoming assessment of the Subaru. Once again, at the time of inspection, the oil leak did not seem to be severe at all and all other systems checked out okay. Also, I gave her my opinion on purchasing the vehicle, and my opinion was I wouldn't purchase the vehicle, not because from any current mechanical problems but because of the rust issues. I do not feel negligent or responsible for the problems of a fifteen year old vehicle that happened several weeks after I gave an honest assessment on. When a mechanical device or system is operating properly at the time of inspection, that is all a mechanic as to go on. No one has control over future problems of any mechanical problems that happen to any vehicle in the future. Even new vehicles have problems sometimes. As I stated earlier, we had spoken several times on the telephone and I felt we had established a good rapport between the two of us. But, I am sadly mistaken. I do not understand why she thinks I would be dishonest or untruthful about a vehicle I was checking out for her when I wasn't even charging for checking it out. I was just trying to help someone and that someone I didn't even know. I had no personal or financial interest or gain in it either way, I had no reason whatsoever to be untruthful or dishonest about the vehicle. I am sorry she feels she had a negative experience with me. However, I told her honestly and truthfully about the Subaru. The same thing I would have told a regular customer or a family member, if they had been interested in the Subaru. I cannot do any more than that. I respectfully ask that she remove her complaint about me. However, if she doesn't, people who know me know that I strive to be honest, truthful and reliable. I hope this explanation of my inspection of the Subaru is satisfactory for all concerned. With Sincere Regards, Mark Galyean Galyean's Garage LLC

Response:

I have reviewed the response offer made by the business in reference to complaint ID [redacted], and have determined that this proposed action would not resolve my complaint. For your reference, details of the offer I reviewed appear below.I don't agree with some of his statements and I feel that the problems I encountered didn't just happen to come about after I purchased the car. I have a letter from my mechanic stating that the oil leak wasn't very minor as he told me. The shift cable did NOT work from the first time I tried to go from Drive to Reverse. He asked me to remove my complaint and I am not going to that. I don't accept his response but I also don't expect that he is willing to do anything about it. So although I am still not happy we can consider this case closed. I will be leaving my complaint on the Revdex.com site. I feel he and the seller were in cahoots to get me to buy this car. Maybe he was even paid something by the seller to give me a good report. Whatever I am done with this business and will be leaving my complaint on the Revdex.com site.Regards,[redacted]
