I must strongly dispute the characterization of our session as a "meet and greet".  I routinely offer brief consults to familiarize myself and the potential client without charge.  However, when Mr. W indicated a desire to proceed beyond that time, I made it clear that I would charge him...

for it at a rate of $300.00 / hour.  That is my standard discounted rate (from $350.00/hour) for non-court professional services.Mr. W proceeded to bring out page after page of questions involving tax and liability issues surrounding several properties.  He took copious notes, and made specified inquiries, not limited to general concepts but directed to his particular situation.  We took nearly 1 1/2 hours, not including my initial preparation from our phone conversations preparatory to the session.  In fact, he continued far into my schedule beyond what had been reasonably budgeted, making me late for my next appointment.  Nevertheless, when he was completed, I looked at the time and offered to accept only $300.00 even though we had gone well beyond an hour.  He said "ok" and proceeded to tender his check which I accepted.I thought we were satisfactorily concluded.  I provided him with valuable advise for well over an hour.  He paid my standard discounted rate as agreed.  I was surprised to hear from him later that he wanted to be refunded, and expected me to answer his pointed questions and get free advice from me for a substantial amount of time.  He says other attorneys say it was not right, but does not name them.  I doubt any qualified attorney, fully informed, would have rendered that opinion.  I am not in the habit of providing my services and expertise without payment in accordance with the terms agreed.  I do, however, consider waiving my fees for charitable or other good reason.  I was considering doing so for Mr. W until I received this complaint.I am still inclined to do so, but not under unfair threat, nor under claim of fraud or unethical behavior, which I strongly deny.  If he wishes me to consider his request as a fair request out of need or misunderstanding, I will do so, and respond favorably within 2 business days.
