I was browsing the web when a window opened up saying that there was some kind of an issue with my Mac and that the computer's main "firewall" had been damaged and would eventually result in major problems to my computerThe window had a phone number I could call if I needed it repairedI had been having some slow-down issues for the previous month or so and I did call the number on the screenThe person I spoke with identified himself as a former Apple employee and now with "GEEKASSURED";I reluctantly allowed my computer to be taken control which I had done before with an actual Apple technician, and ***, the man's name, explained to me what he would do and that it would repair my computer and restore its original speedHe said he could also install some anti-adware software for an additional charge, which I declinedHe preceded to take control of my computer and said it would take about an hour and that he would call me when the work was doneHe did not ask for payment before starting the work
I became worried after a couple of hours when no call was received but my computer seemed to be operating normally, so I shut it down, unplugged it and disconnected my modem, then called a local Apple business and explained what had happenedThey said it was a total scam and to bring my computer down and they would scan it for and remove any installed softwareI took it in to the Apple Store and within five minutes reported that I had an abundance of "Adware" on the hard drive and that they would remove it and install some adware removal softwareWithin a couple of minutes my computer was returned to me for no charge, free of adware and with the promised software installedThe rep and owner commented that in the years the company had been open, they had never found a virus of any kind on a Mac but a lot of "malware " including adware
I was told by the Apple folks not to pay them any money and I have notI did, however, change passwords and logins on my bank accounts, and other businesses immediately after my "Apple Store repair since I was concerned about identity theft, etc
This was two weeks ago and today I received a call from the rep from Geekassured asking whether my computer was fixed and running okHe said that he was not calling to be paid but to explain why he had not called back; he said their phone lines were down and were unable to contact meHe was very pleasant and I told him that when I investigated his company, the responses had been that his company was a scam which he emphatically deniedI must conclude based on my experience with "GeekAssured" that I was not scammed and that I was treated with respect by the reps that I spoke with and that my computer seemed to run normally after the repair by the company

Review: This is an apparent scam operating from New Delhi, India. Its website claims a Wilmington DE address (653 Vandever Ave.), but I found no listing on the Delaware state controllers site when I searched for Geek Asssured Technologies. Geek Assured burst unsolicited into my computer with a great flashing window saying that my computer was infected with a virus, that I should not turn it off or reboot, and that I should immediately call [redacted] answered and said that the main firewall of the computer has crashed, that the computer is 60% stopped, that there was a problem with something called Ad Block, that the computer was infected with 781 harmful files, and that I am not protected. He offered to repair the situation while I waited. He said that the process would take two or three hours and during that time he would service, tune-up, and clean the computer, reinstall Microsoft files, repair the network, install AdBlock and network security, and remove the viruses. He said my case # was [redacted]. I took it that he was therefore connected with Microsoft.I agreed to a three year plan for $249.99. The company took my credit card information, provided a receipt number of [redacted]. The charge to my credit card account was made through PayPal. After they launched their process, I called my husband to tell him what had happened. He checked with the IT department at University of Arkansas, which advised him to immediately shut down the computer because the operation is a scam. I shut it down. I also called my credit card company to inform them. I then received a call identified as coming from Techvisor Solutions, phone number [redacted]. A man who said his name is [redacted] demanded to know why I had shut down the operation. I explained. He said he would refund the $249.99 and that he would send an email receipt for the refund.Shortly afterwards, [redacted] telephoned and said he would fight the refund. He said I should have checked them out before I agreed to their operation. I asked him how I was supposed to have done all this checking when he was on the phone with me saying that the computer had crashed. He said You can use the computer, which didnt match up at all with what he told me earlier about it being crashed. He said the company is approved by the Revdex.com, which is not true.A second opinion from Best Buy technician revealed that there had been no problem with my computer in the first place and therefore Geek Assureds claim that it was crashing was a lie. The technician also said they were practicing a common scam.Desired Settlement: I would like a refund of $249.99 posted to my credit card account, as promised by "[redacted]"
