Review: We had received an estimate from Deck Masters to build our deck 4/21/14 at 8pm, and we decided to have Deck Masters build our deck. We signed the contract and also the rescission papers that allows us 3 days if we change our minds. The following morning at 8:10am 4/22/14, I called and spoke with [redacted] O. and advised him that we decided not to build the deck that something came up and we could not financially make it work. He said no problem, he will send our check back to us and we also have to mail the rescission paper back as well. I said no problem, we will do so today. The rescission paper was signed, dated, and mailed on 4/22/14. This morning 4/23/14, our checking account was debited the $1500 deposit we made. I called and spoke with [redacted] O. and he stated oh he deposited the check on the way home on the evening of the 21st because he didn't want to lose it. I told him that when I spoke with him on the morning of 4/22, 12 hours after we met, that we decided not to do it and he advised that he would send our check back. He stated that he did mail our money back this morning (4/23/14). I advised him that I have the 3 days to decide why would it be deposited, and also why did you tell me you would send our check back. If you did deposit it already why didnt you tell me that in our conversation 4/22/14. I was led to believe the check was not deposited and was being sent back to us. He again gave the reason that prior checks have been lost. [redacted] did not offer any apologies for misleading during the 4/22 AM conversation we had. This situation is UNPROFESSIONAL!!!!Desired Settlement: We want our $1500 deposit replaced and if we recieve any fees from the bank they need to pay for those as well.

Response:

In response to the complaint by [redacted]. Our policy is to deposit down payment checks when a contract is signed, unless the homeowner specifically asks us to hold the check, which Mrs. [redacted] did not do.

When [redacted] called to tell me she needed to cancel on Tuesday April 22, 2014, I wrote her a check and put it in the mail before checking to make sure her check had cleared my account, or waiting for the official Right of Rescission Notice. I am sorry this caused her any problems, as that was not my intent. I thought I did apologize for the misunderstanding.

According to my account statement, [redacted] has received and cashed my check back to her for the deposit.

Response:

My complaint is that [redacted] stated that we have 3 days to decide if we want the deck or not. [redacted] never stated at any time that he will automatically cash our check like he did on the way home. Why have the 3 days to decide and he takes the money anyways. This is not professional at all. I would not do any business with him and why have the 3 days to decide rule?

Regards,

Review: My wife and I purchased a deck from Deckmasters, which was completed around April of 2004. At time of purchase we were informed that the deck came with a lifetime guarantee, which also included a lifetime workmanship warrantee, that gave us "100% complete protection for as long as you own your deck". We have had minor issues over the years, all of which were taken care of with a phone call and them sending someone out to do the repairs. In the Spring of 2015, we noticed that the railing on the one side of our deck was starting to lean out away from the deck. Upon further inspection we noticed that the support post for the corner of that railing was pulling away from the board that is attached to our house. This movement is causing the decking boards to separate(they are of a tongue/groove construct). It has also caused one of the decking pieces to pull out of its attachment point on the house. My wife called Deckmasters West on July 13, 2015 and spoke with Lisa. She informed my wife that Bob, the contact person from Deckmasters who we dealt with when we purchased it, would call us back. The following day, July 14, after not receiving a call, my wife called back in an attempt to get someone out to look at the deck as we were on vacation that week and would be around. She spoke again with Lisa, who informed her that she was "sorry to be the bearer of bad news", but Bob had retired, and since our original contract was with him they were no longer responsible for honoring the warrantee. On July 20 I called the 1-877 # on the Deckmasters website in an attempt to speak with someone to try to get this resolved. I received no return call. I also sent an email to the address listed on the website on July 20. I again called the 1-877 # on July 21, with no return call. On July 22 I called the Pittsburgh West office, leaving a message explaining that I had called the other number twice and asking if someone would please return my call. I received no return call. On July 28 I received an email from Lisa, requesting to know what the issue was, what material the deck was built with and who the owner was I dealt with. She stated that "these answers will help me help you". I responded on July 29 with all requested information. As of todays date, August 12, 2015, I have not received a response from Deckmasters-neither by phone or by email.Desired Settlement: I would like Deckmasters to honor the "Forever deck" lifetime guarantee and lifetime workmanship warrantee that was given at purchase, so that my deck can be repaired.

Review: My husband & I hired Deckmasters to build a basic rectangular deck with stairs. We signed the contract in April. Material was delivered on June 5th and we were told work would be started on June 6th. No one showed up on June 6th. Throughout June & July we have had to consistently call the contractor ([redacted] Oliver) and inquire where he is - why didn't he show up to work on our deck. Often times, he doesn't show up for long periods of time. For example, he was here on July 2nd and didn't return until July 22nd. The contract signed stated, project shall start within 10 business days of this start date [mid may 2014] and continue without delay until completion. This obviously didn't happen. The contract also states, project working hours are generally scheduled between 8:00am and 4:30pm weekdays. [redacted] would show at random times (never at 8am) and leave always before 4pm. Some days only working a few hours, most days not showing up at all. Therefore, the contract was violated. [redacted] rarely communicated with us on when he'd be here. We always needed to hunt him down, leaving voice mails on his phone and calling the main office looking for him. When we did talk to him and explain our issues he would promise he would show up only to not show up with no phone call as to why. It is July 30th and our deck is still not finished. We are very unsatisfied and displeased. My husband & I feel we've tried as hard as we can giving [redacted] multiple opportunities to change and fix the situation, only to be lied to again and again. We have other projects on hold waiting for this deck to be completed & we have waited long enough. [redacted] called stating he would be here Monday or Tuesday of this week to finish & he never showed nor called to let us know anything. (he has done this before). We can't trust him.Desired Settlement: We would like to get someone else to finish the project. Therefore, not paying [redacted] the final payment.

Review: I hired George O[redacted] on May 1, 2015 to install a patio deck. He collected $1k in a deposit and never showed up to do the work. Mr. O[redacted] never returned phone calls and went MIA.

On October 30, 2015, I went to the local police station. Although Mr. O[redacted] does not answer my phone calls, he did answer the phone call from the police station. He had no excuse for his non-performance and not doing the work for the last 6 months. The police told him he had 5 business days to refund my deposit or he would be brought under charges for theft.Desired Settlement: Mr. O[redacted] has until Nov. 6 11 am to refund my deposit or legal action will be taken. His track record speaks for itself and I am doubtful if we will pay what is owed to me.

Contractors such as Mr. O[redacted] should not be allowed to do business in our great country. His course of conduct and track record should be noted for other's contemplating doing business with him.

Review: We are in the process of having a deck built by Deckmasters. Work began in early June and we are still owed a few items that were agreed upon in our contract as well as a final walk through with our contractor (George O[redacted] ###-###-####). We have placed numerous calls that have not been returned. The last time we saw or heard from him was 7/23/15.

Since then, we have found out that the contractor never applied for a building permit and never scheduled any of the required inspections, even though our contract explicitly states that he was responsible for doing so and it was also included in the project cost. Our building inspector ([redacted]/Moon Township ###-###-####) reached out to the contractor on numerous occasions to submit the proper paperwork, but the contractor has failed to do so. [redacted] also brought to our attention that our contractor has been in violation with at least one other project in Moon Township. Also, the contractor as well as the company owner [redacted] ###-###-####) has failed to respond to the Violation Letter sent from Moon Township.

We proceeded to submit the paperwork for the building permit ourselves. The building inspector then carried out an inspection on 8/24/15. There were several issues found to the extent of what was visible, most importantly the guard rails do not meet the 200 pound lateral load required by the building code. As a result our deck is unsafe and should be blocked off from access. Our building inspector spoke to our contractor on 8/25/15 and was assured that we would be contacted to have our deck brought up to code. However, as we have come to expect we have not heard a word from George O[redacted]. So what we have is a deck that is completely useless (nor totally complete as agreed upon in our contract) and a contractor who refuses to return any of our calls.Desired Settlement: We would like to have the deck that we agreed upon in the contract completed, as well as the code issues that were found during the deck inspection resolved and after such completion, the Workmanship Warranty we are entitled to as stated in the contract.

Review: November 11, 2014, [redacted] accepted, then cashed, my $300 checkas deposit for installing a railing. He never did the work nor has hereturned any phone messages. He has not responded to a certified letter(see attached).I wish I would have checked into his company to see his “F””rating butsince he was at the Pittsburgh Home Show I thought he was reputable.don’t understand how someone with so many complaints against him isallowed to stay in business——taking more customers’ moneyDesired Settlement: I want him to return my $300.

Review: Signed a contract on May 8, 2014 for the work to be done ASAP. To date this work has not been started. I have talked to the owner- George Oliverand also Lisa from Corp office several times. I sent a letter of the time line as trying to contact him of my complaint, which I do have a copy. I ask for my $500 deposit back and to date have not yet received my deposit. Extremely dissatisfied consumer with the practice of business. HELP!Desired Settlement: I want my $500 deposit returned as a cashier's check, to ensure I get the money.
