Vehicle was towed to our facility because it had been broken into, vandalized and was not starting
We diagnosed the starting problem to be the started motor and did get the car started after new starterBut once the car was running there was an abnoise when starting engine and then it lessened after a short period
Customer was made aware of this abnoise at that timeCustomer requested to replace engine oil and filter and requested to get vehicle ready for smog test
Check engine light has been on since 9/3/2013, the first time customer brought vehicle to our facility with numerous fault codesVehicle cannot be smogged unless check engine light is off and monitors are set, and if there is no other problems
Customer requested us to drive her car and attempt to reset fault codes and get her ready for smog testWhile test driving her car coming to a stop at idle, the engine started making a lot of noise and shut offUnable to start the vehicle we towed it back to our facility.
Please see attached repair order for details of our findings
Customer was made aware of all internal engine damageEngine has over 202,miles, and vehicle has lots of other problems as wellThere are signs of neglect and abuseAlso, there was some work done on the engine by another shop about a year agoCost of repairs far exceeded the value of the vehicle
We regret that the customer is trying to blame us for the internal damages to her engine and trying to make us pay for it
We are not responsible for her engine failing internallyWe did a partial tear down in good faith, with customer's permission to see what happened and if it was feasible to repair it, not because we had something to hide.
As a goodwill gesture, we did not charge customer anything except the cost of part for the starter, and as per her request we put all removed parts in boxes in trunk

Review: German Auto Center received my car 8/7/14. [redacted] assessed the car & advised it needed a starter. My check engine light was on & I asked them to also do a full service so the check engine light turns off. I was called on Monday 8/12 that my car repairs were completed & I could pick up my car. I advised due to work that I could not make it into the shop until 8/15. When I spoke to [redacted] he stated since I couldn't pick up the car, that he would drive it home & drive it for the next few days to ensure the codes re-set and the check engine light shuts off. On Friday the 15th, I received a call from [redacted] stating that when he was driving my car that day, he heard a loud snap and the engine blew. When I received that call I was in shock because I took it in for a starter & service and they had been driving my car since that Tuesday. [redacted] responded with saying, he was already having a terrible day & just received news he had to put his dog to sleep, and I would not receive any other information about my car until 8/18. I demanded to go to the shop that following Monday where to my surprise, I met with [redacted] and he took me to my engine that was already taken apart and in pieces. He explained to me what he thought happened and proceeded to say I need to get rid of my car. I then told them I was having it towed out & to my surprise they just put all the engine pieces in boxes in my car. I wanted nothing more to do with them so I had my car towed to a reputable shop that has worked on my car for years. The shop owner of 27 years assessed my car & stated that no shop would do additional work & take an engine apart unless there was damage to hide & advised to get an attorney & file a claim through the German Auto's insurance. I hired an attorney who called [redacted] & he stated he needed to talk to their shop owner [redacted]. [redacted] then refused to give his insurance info and gave his attorneys info. My attorney has made several attempts to reach their attorney with no calls back..Desired Settlement: Their insurance to cover the engine repairs to be completed by [redacted] who now has my car and reimbursement of my rental car that I have had since I took my car into German Auto Center.

RE: [redacted] complaint ID #[redacted]

Dear [redacted]:

Thank you for letting me know about the complaint against our company. I am not sure if you have a copy of out repair order on file, it is included in this fax, please review as it will explain the facts.

Vehicle was towed to our facility because it had been broken into, vandalized and was not starting.

We diagnosed the starting problem to be the started motor and did get the car started after new starter. But once the car was running there was an abnormal noise when starting engine and then it lessened after a short period.

Customer was made aware of this abnormal noise at that time. Customer requested to replace engine oil and filter and requested to get vehicle ready for smog test.

Check engine light has been on since 9/3/2013, the first time customer brought vehicle to our facility with numerous fault codes. Vehicle cannot be smogged unless check engine light is off and monitors are set, and if there is no other problems.

Customer requested us to drive her car and attempt to reset fault codes and get her ready for smog test. While test driving her car coming to a stop at idle, the engine started making a lot of noise and shut off. Unable to start the vehicle we towed it back to our facility.

Please see attached repair order for details of our findings.

Customer was made aware of all internal engine damage. Engine has over 202,000 miles, and vehicle has lots of other problems as well. There are signs of neglect and abuse. Also, there was some work done on the engine by another shop about a year ago. Cost of repairs far exceeded the value of the vehicle.

We regret that the customer is trying to blame us for the internal damages to her engine and trying to make us pay for it.

We are not responsible for her engine failing internally. We did a partial tear down in good faith, with customer's permission to see what happened and if it was feasible to repair it, not because we had something to hide.

As a goodwill gesture, we did not charge customer anything except the cost of part for the starter, and as per her request we put all removed parts in boxes in trunk.

Thank you for your time and assistance, please do not hesitate to contact me should you have any questions or concerns.

Consumer
