A Voice for the Elderly

I am writing regarding the treatment of my parents at the Gershwin Theater on July **, 2015. When they entered the theater the workers saw my 81 year old mother on her cane ([redacted]) and my 82 year old hunched over ([redacted]) and slow walking dad (no padding on the bottom of the [redacted] of his feet) and immediately brought them to the front of the line and showed them the handicapped bathroom. These workers were excellent and knew how to help the elderly and handicapped. I just wish the managerial staff was half as compassionate.

After the play my mom and dad were walking around the lobby looking at all the pictures. My dad felt a little tired and leaned against the showcase. It gave way and came forward causing him to fall to the ground, then the showcase fell on top of his [redacted]! Fellow theater patrons ran over to help him. They lifted the showcase off his [redacted] and helped him to his feet. Finally management came over. They asked if he wanted an ambulance and due to pride, embarrassment and a good old veteran spirit he declined. They did not push the issue but rather showed him to the handicapped bathroom then the exit. It was as if they couldn’t get my parents out of the theater quick enough. I imagine them thinking..”If we can get him out the door then he’s no longer our problem. He declined an ambulance and he walked out of the theater. We did what we were told to do…ask about an ambulance. Our responsibility is over”. They probably didn’t want anyone else to see or document with phones what happened to my dad.

When I spoke with the manager Rick that following Monday he informed me that he was not on duty that night but heard about the incident. I mentioned that when dealing with elderly, especially when one was thrown to the ground and had a showcase topple over on them, an ambulance should have been called no matter how many times a patron says it is not needed. Elderly bones DO NOT bounce back like a twenty year old! Medical attention should have been administered to make sure 1) he is able to walk and 2) did he hit his head in the fall?? Also, they should have had a taxi take my parents where they needed to go. Instead my dad with that smashed [redacted] had to walk and go up and down subway steps!! My mom couldn’t help him since she was on her cane.

On August ** Elyse R[redacted] from [redacted] sent my dad a letter stating “you leaned against a display case and it fell over on you. There has never been an incident with this display case until now. The display case is not meant to be leaned on. We are sorry you were injured but in this case, we find no liability on this matter”.

I was very upset that she was blaming a frail 82 year old man for getting hurt on their property and wrote her a letter in response to the one she sent my dad. I stated how she would have been writing a different letter if this had happened to a child rather than an elderly person. I guess she just assumed that an elderly person would not have the energy and wherewithal to argue back…and she’s right. My dad is still embarrassed by this and refuses to do anything. Because of her letter he thinks that now it is his fault. However, anyone would know that A SHOWCASE SHOULD NEVER BE ABLE TO FALL ON SOMEONE!!!!!!!

Elyse’s response to my letter stated “The display case has been there for over 15 years without a problem. It didn’t just fall over on its own. Also, it was noted that your mother told the theatre or the medics that he was not using his cane that night. However, I am not placing blame on anyone”. Really??? You’re not placing blame on my dad??? AND…he doesn’t have a cane; never did. My mom has the cane.

Elyse then offered to finally “look over” his medical bills. (Unfortunately, there is no way to attach pictures of his [redacted]). He had a [redacted] and x-ray done on his [redacted] and was told that it was thankfully just severely sprained and would be swollen and sore for a while.

Right now I do not care about being reimbursed for the medical bills. That is not my issue. I am speaking out on behalf of all elderly people. My dad thankfully is OK now and he has family that was able to help him. But what if this happened to another elderly person? What if their [redacted] got smashed and they fell down the subway stairs because they couldn’t walk on that bad [redacted]. What if in the fall they hit their head then passed out crossing the street? I feel they were very irresponsible sending an injured person out to the street. Sensitivity, compassion and concern for my dad, an elderly veteran, who was hurt on THEIR property was not shown and to me that is extremely horrible management!

The elderly DO matter!!!
