Review: My very valuable wheel was damaged while in the tire shop.

On November 2, 2013 I took a wheel and tire to Giant Discount tire to get a puncture repaired. The wheel is a high performance alloy wheel, for a 2011 Subaru WRX. The car belongs to my son, but he was not involved in the transaction. The wheel was in perfect condition when brought to the shop. The service technician noted no problems or defects on arrival or release. I received the wheel, put it in the trunk of my car, and took it home. When I got it out to put back on the car, I noticed multiple scratches, including areas on the inside edge of the rim. The finish is damaged beyond repair and the set of wheels has lost its value. We estimate the wheel was worth $300. The manager states that, since the technician did not record any damage done, it must have occurred after it left the shop. I had not inspected the rim carefully at the shop, but did have it under direct observation at all times when not in the trunk of my car. I am absolutely certain the damage did not occur after leaving the shop.

I approached the manager, who contacted the owner. They are willing to obtain a wheel and sell it to me at no mark-up. This is categorically unacceptable. They are willing to direct me to someone who can make it look better. This is also not acceptable.Desired Settlement: I require a new Subaru wheel, identical to the other three.

There are a few items to clarify on Mr. [redacted]'s account of events. First, typically customers drive their vehicles to us and we remove the wheel/tire from the vehicle ourselves. In this case Mr. [redacted] brought in a loose tire/wheel, meaning someone other than the employees of Giant Discount Tire removed and installed the tire/wheel on/from the vehicle. Second, the wheel in question is unique in that it can only be placed in the tire changer upside down with the finish surface pointing away from any pry bars or moving equipment parts; the finished surface is utterly untouched by the machine or tools.

As stated by Mr. [redacted], he picked up the wheel/tire from our shop and took it to his car placing it in the trunk. During this time he did not notice multiple scratches that according to him are so bad that they cannot be repaired?

Giant Discount Tire cannot comment on what happened with the wheel once it left the shop. We don't know if the wheel was damaged in transit while in the trunk of the vehicle or possibly damaged while being reinstalled on the vehicle (as noted above the vehicle itself was not at the shop on this date). All we can do is assist Mr. [redacted] in getting his wheel back to proper condition.

As indicated be Mr. [redacted], there were 2 options discussed. The first was to assist Mr. [redacted] in the purchase of a new wheel at cost. The second, recommended by us, was to let us send the wheel out to a wheel repair shop. This shop specializes in restoring vintage wheels as well as late model wheels. Since the wheel in question has a powder coated surface (think high end paint job), the repair is straight forward and always looks as good as new. As stated above, Mr. [redacted] was not even interested in trying this option. This would be like someone telling their insurance company that a scratch on there cars' fender require the whole car be replaced instead of the scratch being repaired. It seems Mr. [redacted] is not willing to look at other viable solutions.

Review: On 2-15-2014 my van was taken to shop for a diagnostic for overheating problem. We clearly told them our van would overheat & radiator would make bubbly sound when the vehicle was hot. We went back to the shop that day after not hearing back from them, at that time we were told we had a leak by the timing belt gasket & a faulty water pump & fixing those issues would fix the problem. Five days and 1300.00$ Later we picked up van only to find it was still overheating. Again we took to the shop, And again they ran test and said they replaced the thermostat and gasket due to a leak. We questioned if they checked all possibilities of an over heating problem specifically if our block heads were tested. We were told yes by bob who works the front office. Again we left the shop with a vehicle that overheated. We took the van back a THIRD time. [redacted] the "manager" was working the front, I explained situation to him he took my keys said he call when they found something. A few hours later [redacted] called told me we had a blown head gasket & the cost to repair would be between 1000-2000$. When questioned has to why problem wasn't found last 2 visits he claimed we NEVER brought in for overheating. He said we came in wanting our timing belt and water pump replaced. I was at work and unable to leave, my boyfriend and step father went in, both been there during the other visits to the shop. [redacted] insisted we never came in with that problem at which point my boyfriend walked him threw the entire scenario of [redacted] and the mechanic showing him the wet spots on the water pump and where timing gasket was leaking. [redacted] all of a sudden switched up his story and claims the gasket blew due to all the new parts. Said when they test drove it didn't get hot. On the invoice from 1st repairs mileage in an out we're same asked if they test drove mileage never changed claims it was entered wrong. The problem we went in for was never fixed they kept replacing parts but NEVER resolved issue which I believe was head all along.Desired Settlement: Due to them insisting we replace water pump and timing belt. I am not requesting full refund only labor cost since the issues they claimed would resolve our problem NEVER did. I am not a mechanic which is why I took my car to there shop. The total of the bill for the repairs was 1358.68, 611.96 for parts and 697.76 for labor. The amount I am requesting to be refunded is 431.20 for timing chain replacement, 176 for what they documented has misc service labor.

Response:

On 2/15/2014 the 2000 Chrysler Grand Voyager was brought into our shop. The Customer requested us to "Inspect coolant leak/oil leak. Inspect only today". Upon inspection of the vehicle it was determined that coolant was leaking from the Timing Belt Cover and Water Pump. The vehicle was dropped off on 2/17/2014 to complete these repairs. Work was completed and a pressure test was done on the vehicle to check for any additional leaks. None were found. The vehicle was returned to the customer on 2/21/2014. We were informed by the customer several days later that the vehicle was still over heating. On 2/25/2014 we inspected the vehicle again and determined that coolant was leaking from the Thermostat/Thermostat Gasket. This was not a part of the original repairs. The technician observed that at some point the thermostat was changed by someone else and that they left pieces of the original thermostat gasket in place; this allowed a small leak in fluid to occur. We replaced the Thermostat Gasket properly at no charge to the customer. Several days later we were again informed by the customer that the vehicle was overheating. Upon inspection it was found that all previous repairs were correct and that fluid was now leaking from the Head Manifold Gasket(s). A majority of the time fixing a visible leak in the cooling system will take care of the problem and no additional repairs are needed. Other times, however, once the original leak is repaired other leaks will develop. Unfortunately this is sometimes the reality with older vehicles and cooling systems. Fluid will find the path of least resistance. In this case it started with the Timing Cover and Water Pump, then moved to the Thermostat Gasket, and then to the Head Gasket(s). Sometimes these failures occur while the vehicle is still on our property, other times, like in this instance, it takes several days and miles before another weak part in the system is revealed. If the vehicle does not fail the pressure test and no leaks are visible we cannot recommend any other repairs (aside from preventative maintenance). To do so might/would lead to our customers paying for something they did not need.

Response:

I am rejecting this response because: Being that I took said vehicle in for inspection for an over heating problem their mechanic should have inspected all avenues and possibilities prior to suggesting repairs. Ultimately the last paragraph of the there response says it all a customer should not have to pay for repairs that we're not needed or did not resolve the problem that it was originally brought in for. And an auto repair shop should ALWAYS test drive said vehicles before and after repair to determine the existing problem and see if they ACCURATELY resolved said problem. If they had test drove the vehicle in the first place after repairs they would have found it to still be over heating but since they did not and there documentation on the invoice from the repairs proves they never even moved my vehicle the are up 1300 dollars and I am stuck paying for another shop to repair the problem they were initially paid to to fix. If this shop will lie about test driving a vehicle what else are they lying about.

Sincerely,

Response:

In response to Monday, April 7th correspondence. [redacted] states that she rejects our earlier response stating that all problems should be found on the initial inspection. Unfortunately this is not always possible. As stated before fluids will leak at the weakest point, when she first brought the vehicle in the coolant leak was at the timing cover. The system was pressure tested and checked after the repair with no issues found. Unfortunately a repair not done at our shop caused a problem a day later. Giant discount Tire doesnot know if this repair was done before our after our original repair, but we fixed the issue at no cost to [redacted] (even tough the work was done elsewhere or by the customer). Once again the vehicle was tested and the system pressure tested with no issues found. The vehicle was picked up and driven for 21 days and nearly 225 miles before another issue arose. Unfortunately this is the reality with older vehicles and cooling systems, once oneleak is fixed another "weakness" in the system is occured. We understand the customers frustration in this situation. our goal is to get our customer reunited with a working vehicle. In order to ease this frustrating situation we occer to make the needed repair to the vehicle at wholesale price, essentially crediting a large portion of the last repair to the current fix that is needed. [redacted] has been a long standing customer with no past problems or issues. Giant Discount Tires would like to continue that relationship.

Response:

I am rejecting this response because: I am currently dealing with the bureau of automotive repair in regards to this complaint. I have talked to SEVERAL other mechanics about the repairs done and continuous issues with the shop all of whom have said that they would have checked the heads and gaskets with the symptoms described. Has far has driving the vehicle the miles they claim is neither here nor there they were notified immediately after the vehicle was picked up that said problem still existed. The vehicle was not taken in sooner due to me having 4 children to take to school during the last big storm. Giant tire was the one who said I could bring it in and "they would get to it when they had time." The worst part of this situation is the first thing that pops up when you Google "how to tell if your machanic is ripping you off?" Is the exact same repairs that this mechanic told me needed resolved to fix my problem. They are right I have been a loyal paying customer for YEARS and the thermostat they said they replaced at no charge was a LIE because they called me a week after the repair was done asking for payment at which time I told them I was not paying them anymore money till my original problem they said was resolved was actually fixed. I don't doubt that the repair is now free it is the least they can do after failing to do the job I paid them to do. And I personally do not trust there mileage documentation since it was in accurately documented on my invoice in the first place. This fact of the matter is what was the point of me taking my vehicle to this shop to a professional to fix if all the basically did was play the guessing game. They can say they did all the diagnostics and this and that but I wouldn't know since they failed to provide me with copies of the test done but I guess looking back that was probably intentional on their part makes it a little easier to cover up a mistake.

There is no better service center for cars in Lodi, than Giant Discount Tire.

Their staff is highly professional and top notch in every way. I trust them to do the best thing for my vehicles.

They have a very large and comfortable waiting area, that has allowed me the opportunity to hear the kind, considerate, knowledgeable

Conversations with different customers.

I have always been impressed with the Sales men's ability to handle the most difficult customers. I have witness on more than one occasion, people come in with a very poor attitude, to only leave a few minutes later fairly happy and most of the time laughing at a joke or funny statement the guys at the front counter have made.

I have always been very consistent in obtaining three quotes for any services above $100. It has served me well over the years. I am an accountant and it is second nature for me. I have always found that Giants pricing to be 30 to 40% less then others.

I truly appreciate the home town feel, and the reasonably priced services.
