On August 7, 2013, Gillespie Roofing started the reroofing of our home as contracted in July by their Estimator. The workers had to pull up the old roof which was a hot-mopped asphalt roof with roofing nails attached. Many of the old rusty, tar-smudged nails found their way to the ground. The workers retrieved some but not all. We found several (more than 10) around in the flower beds, etc.
The worst part was: one nail which I unknowingly stepped on went through my sneaker sole and into the base of my right big toe. Unfortunately, I have neuropathy in my feet and did not feel that nail puncture so I walked on it most of the afternoon. By the time I took off my shoes and discovered the nail and the blood, there was quite a big hole gouged into the ball of my foot!
Because the nail had also dug into the bone, an infection set in which in spite of antibiotics and hospital stays, the toe had to be amputated in order to save my foot. After many hundreds of dollars, hospital and clinic visits, and the loss of my summer, planned vacations, not to mention the pain, I was able to walk again and the incision healed.
All the above can be documented through photographs and medical records.
I sent a letter similar to this to the Estimator of the job in November 2013. I was hoping he would come clean to his boss or the owner so they would find a way to contain the nails on future jobs and not jeopardize anyone else. I don’t know if that happened but I never heard a word from the roofing company in the way of an apology or regret.
Since then, we have found some more nails in the flower beds as we clean them out (but very careful where we step).
