In response to the letter explaining [redacted]'s complaints, we understand that the student isnot satisfied with the amount that they are responsible for paying the school. The student signed acontract with Glen Dow Academy on December 23, 2016. Students have 3 days after they start theirprogram...

All students who have never recieved Financial Aid, grantsand loans, to pay for their schooling have a 30 day time period in which the Department ofEducation places a hold on the students loans. The student withdrew before the 30 day time periodin order to obtain those loans. The student stated that they had not received any equipment in theircomplaint. Upon locating the students locker, which had no lock on it, we have obtained anequipment list that the student themself had filled out along with equipment and 3 textbooks. Review: My daughter was attending Glen Dow and they continued to pick on the students, grabbing tools right out of their hands and making a seen in front of the whole class. After three weeks of being mentally abused, she quit school. Her finanical aid was charged for her attending and my undertanding is that pays for books and supplies. Upon leaving, she was asked to leave to put everything back into her locker , lock it and go ahead and go. Her finanical aid she has to pay back, so how many other students have they riped off. Another thing that bothers me is they were not going to let her leave , trying to convience her stay. Why would someone want to stay and be mentally abused. I believe you should have someone check into the abuse that this school is using as their technique.Desired Settlement: I want the books and supplies that my daughters finanical aid has paid for. It would be nice for an apology as well.

Case #[redacted]

Response from Glen Dow Academy on Complaint

Dear [redacted]/Resolution Moderator,

Since the person filing the complaint did not mention her daughter’s name in the complaint I was able to track the mother of the student in question by looking at several files therefore I know the daughter of [redacted]. I will not mention the students name due to privacy reasons. I have investigated the allegation statement by interviewing the two teachers who would have come into contact with the student. Both adamantly deny ever mentally abusing or grabbing tools right out of the student’s hands or making a scene in front of the whole class. These two instructors are highly experienced one of which has been employed at the Glen Dow Academy for 30 years the other for 1 year. In my dealings with these two instructors these kinds of allegations (that were in the customer’s statement) have never been alleged by any students. In the learning process of handling tools in cosmetology most students learn by doing. We often help the student learn best by guiding their hands if need be. It is part of the learning process. As the students are learning on mannequins/clients we often need to ask the student for the tools they are working with to demonstrate the technique so they can mimic back to the instructor the proper technique. This is a common practice in all cosmetology training. Glen Dow Academy has been well known in the beauty industry for the last 45 years for teaching the best techniques in cosmetology.

When I learned that the student wanted to quit school I interviewed her for a few short minutes. She wanted to leave in the morning and go talk to her mother. I mentioned to her that it would be acceptable to do so. She returned in the afternoon with her mother and all three of us had a meeting in my office. The student mentioned her reason for leaving was to go to ultra sound school. She said that cosmetology wasn’t interesting for her. My reply was “That’s ok, and the school will do the exit paper work to disclose the fees of tuition books supplies and taxes. This would disclose how much in financial aid grants had been accredited to her account.” It was discussed in this meeting that there may be a bill owed by the student due to the regulations with the federal government on returning grant money which was not earned by the student. I mentioned to them the federal guideline of doing the exit calculations within the next 30 days and the school would contact them.

Once the exit has been disclosed to the student if there is not a bill owed by the student the school can release transcripts and equipment. If there is a bill owed to the school by the student the student must pay off the bill before the school can release transcripts and equipment. This is a standard practice in all schools across America.

At the time of the meeting all of this was explained to the mother and the daughter. They seemed to be in agreement with the explanation of all of the above.

One day before this meeting on May 15th. The Admissions Director received an email from [redacted]. She alleged similar allegations in her letter that she sent to the Revdex.com. She never gave us the name of the student in question. The Admissions Director emailed back on May 15th within the hour of receiving the complaint. The Admissions Director asked for more information so that we could have a meeting to resolve the situation. The following day the student quit school. It was never disclosed to me by [redacted] that she had emailed the Admissions Director the day before or that her daughter had other issues surrounding her reasons to quit school. At the time I did not know the connection between the email to the Admissions Director on the 15th and the student who was quitting school on the 16th of May.

After interviewing the class room teacher of 30 years’ experience, and with my 30 years of being a school director, it is my belief that the student was telling her mother fictitious and untrue stories to defend her reasons for choosing cosmetology as her choice of profession and I also think they made up this complaint so that in the event there is a bill owed she may not have to pay. I have found that people sometimes make up excuses to not have to except the responsibilities of their choices. I believe this is the case in this particular situation.

The Glen Dow Academy has always had a great reputation in training cosmetology students to be the best in this industry for over 45 years we strive to have wonderful relations with our students and customers.

Sincerely,

Glen Dow Academy

School Director
