Complaint 1D#***Glider City PowersportsThis customer brought in a crankshaft to be rebuiltThe customer removed the crankshaft from hisCmachine and brought in just that part (not entire machine) along with his own supplied parts.While his machine is not one that we sellIt is for
us to repair all makes and modelsOurmanufacturers offer similar models so we are familiar and accustomed to this type of repairThere aretwo steps to this job, the first step is to rebuild the crankshaft and the second step is to 'true' thecrankshaftOur mechanic completed the first step of the job and successfully rebuilt the crankshaft.However, when he started the second step of the job and began to "'true" the crankshaft, he recognizedthat it was not responding like a crankshaft wouldIt is a small community of mechanicsworking in this field, and they often will share information in difficult situationsOur mechanic madephone calls to several local crankshaft repair shops and found that this crankshaft was known to beextremely difficult to true and most refused to do any work on themWe searched and found one shopthat agreed to take in the crankshaft and complete the "truing" procedureAs it turns out, there is aspecial jig for this specific crankshaft, and this shop has the necessary jigThe customer was notifiedof our difficulties and of our solution to send the crankshaft out to be finishedWith the customersapproval, we sent the crankshaft out to that shop for them to complete the workWhen the work wascompleted and the trued crankshaft was back in our shop our mechanic placed it in the truing standand verified that the work had been completed to required specificationsOnce back in our shop, therewas more work to be done on the crankshaftOur mechanic had to re-install the end bearings on to thecrankshaft and install the new piston and ring set ou the connecting rodThese procedures were allcompleted and the customer was made aware that the item was ready to pick up.We are not a franchised Cdealer, but our manufacturers have comparable machinesTodetermine the labor fees for the job we used the flat rate mechanic hours specified for a crankshaftrepair on comparable Kawasaki and Yamaha machinesThese labor hours are and hours,respectivelySince the customer provided the crankshaft already removed, we adjusted the rate toaccount for that The adj listed the labor hours came down to the rate to approximately labor hours.Breaking down the bill for this job is as followsOur current shop labor rate is $68/hour, so ~68/ hourtimes hours(the adjusted labor rate) is $We charged Mr*** $(less than the adjustedlabor rate) plus sales tax of $for a total of $for the jobThis equals only labor hours(227/68=3.33)There is a "crank works" line item showing up on Mr***'s receipt, but this is notus charging him for this work done at ''crank works"This line was entered as such so our computersystem could accurately show the loss in billable labor hours (the signitlcant time our mechanic workedon the crank that was NOT billed to tile customer)We explained this to Mr*** when he picked uphis crankshaft.The final bill paid by the Mr*** was the same price he would have paid if all the work (rebuilding,truinginstalling end bearings, and installing he new piston and ring set on the connecting rod) wasdone in our facility.As we found out, this particular job is recognized as extremely difficult by several crankshaft specificrepair facilities, which is why we did not bill for the large number of hours we had invested in the joband only billed the fair value for the job
