On May 17,2014, [redacted], one of Great Eastern Management
Company's leasing agents, met with [redacted] to show her a 2 bedroom 2
bathroom apartment. After showing [redacted] the apartment, she told Brooke
that she would need to talk to her sister, [redacted], and that they would
come back on Sunday, May 18,2014, with some other family members to take
another tour before making a decision. When [redacted] and [redacted] returned to
the office on Sunday, [redacted] showed them the same apartment that she had shown
[redacted] the previous day. They really liked the apartment and decided to
proceed with the reservation process by completing the applications, paying the
application fees of$35 each, the security deposit of$350, and signing the lease
agreement. They were both given the lease to read over and sign and were told
to feel free to ask any questions that they may have before doing so. They then
both completed the applications, paid the money owed, and signed the lease
agreement.
On May 27, 2014, [redacted] called [redacted] and let her know that
their applications were approved, and they were set to move in on June 1,2014.
[redacted] then told [redacted] that she wouldn't be able to move in until June
5,2014. [redacted] explained to her that the lease starts June 1st, but that she could choose to come in on the 5th as they were
getting the first month's rent for free anyway, but we could not alter the
dates on a signed lease. When [redacted] came in on June 6,2014 to sign her move
in paperwork, she said that she would have [redacted] come in to sign as well
and pick up her keys. [redacted] never came in to sign or pick up keys.
On June 26th or 27 [redacted] came into the office and asked to speak with
[redacted] privately and they went into one of the other offices to talk. [redacted]
explained to [redacted] that her job situation had changed and she did not want to
move into the apartment or pay for an apartment that she was not going to live
in. She wanted to know how to get off of the lease and [redacted] told her that,
with written permission from [redacted], we could remove her from the lease. [redacted] left the office and returned later that day with [redacted]. They sat down
with [redacted] who went over their options to either remove [redacted] from the
lease, find another roommate to take [redacted]'s place, move to a smaller
apartment for less rent, or sublease the apartment. [redacted] was not willing
to remove [redacted] from the lease and be responsible for the rent on her own,
and [redacted] didn't want to go on a lease for a smaller apartment with less
rent because she would still be paying for an apartment that she would not be
living in. At this point in the conversation, [redacted], another leasing
agent with Great Eastern Management Company, overheard the conversation and offered
assistance. She reiterated the options that [redacted] provided, which was for**.
[redacted] to find another roommate, move to a smaller apartment by herself, or
sublease their apartment. She also added that since [redacted] qualified for the
apartment on her own, she could stay there and not have to move again. **.
[redacted] was irate at this point and said she didn't want to get the keys or sign
the paperwork because she was not going to pay for a room that she would not be
staying in. She asked what she needed to pay for July and she wrote a check for
half of the rent then left saying she did not have time for this and she had to
get back to work.
There were multiple conversations very similar to this one that
followed, and in each one we worked to help resolve the issue by presenting the
same options. Until receiving this complaint from the Revdex.com,
neither party ever said that they felt like they were scammed into signing a
lease. They did, however, say that they signed the lease without reading it.
[redacted] has since found a roommate who has signed the lease, and
is in the process of moving into the property.
Thank you for your attention to this matter, and thank you for
taking the time to discuss this last week. Please do not hesitate to contact me
if you feel that I can be of any further assistance in this matter.
Sincerely,
[redacted]

Review: • On May 18th I went to WESTGATE APARTMENT leasing office with a second party in search of a 2bedroom 2 bath apartment. On that same day the leasing agent told us to pay a security deposit of 200dollars and a 70 dollar application fee for them to both hold the unit and then run a credit check on us. I asked what happened if I change my mind about the apartment. She responded our70 dollars application fee would be non refundable and our security deposit would be refunded. She then proceeded to handout some paper documents to each of us to sign which we were told was our agreement for them to have the right to check our background.

• On June 1st,I received a call from the apartment cautioning me to come by and receive my key to the apartment as I had been approved. I furiously demanded how I'm told to come get a key when I haven't even signed a lease. They proceeded to inform me that in fact one of the paper work I signed that very day of inquiry was a "lease " agreement. I came by the office on June 4 to verify this and lo and behold I had been scammed to sign a binding document which explicitly make myself and the second part liable to a total payment of 14,399 for a 12month lease with the first month being free. I was told I had no option but to move in otherwise face the consequences. I helplessly obliged and moved in to the unit on June 5. I was given my key and told that the second party would be contacted in the same manner to also come by for her key since we both signed the suppose "lease'. When the apartment contacted the second party, she vehemently refused to move in stating the apartment totally tricked her into a corner. She refused to come for her key or move in as indicated in the supposed lease. She subsequently left the country.

• I contacted the apartment to nullify the lease or sublease the apartment since I had been a victim of corrupt leasing practice. The apartment refused stating the second party would have to be present and I have to be liable for the total monthly rent;(making me wholly and unethically responsible for their crude corrupt scheme). Trouble is their second party refuses to have anything to do with their apartment and refuses to be tricked into another document. The apartment tells me the only way for me is to find another roommate in order for them to take the second party and reassign another person to the supposed lease (how is this even possible if the supposed paper work is a binding lease). Again the apartment is trying to coerce, and manipulate the situation and victimize me for the second time. It is their responsibility to bear the consequence of corrupt business practice.

• I'm willing to pay the rent of the month of July and move out at the end of the month thereof. I'm also willing to turn in their 300 dollars incentives given on the move in date(They would have to return all my receipts also). I'm willing to forfeit my security deposit. I'm willing to bear the full cost of my moving out and getting another apartment by the end of the 31st of this month. I'm willing to take responsibilities for my part of this bad business deal. The apartment can sought out their scandal with their second party abroad thereafter. As a student, this is really threatening my very sanity.Desired Settlement: This so called lease appear to be a scam form the very beginning and need to be nullified. I'm willing to pay the rent of the month of July and move out at the end of the month thereof. I'm also willing to turn in their 300 dollars incentives given on the move in date(They would have to return all my receipts also). I'm willing to forfeit my security deposit.
