Dear
Mr***:
Thank
you for contacting us on
behalf of Mr*** *** and for providing us the
opportunity to address his concerns in regard to Great Lakes’ past credit
reporting
The
Higher Education Act of 1965, as amended, requires that Great Lakes report the
status of all serviced accounts to the national Credit Reporting Agencies
(CRAs). Additionally, the Fair Credit
Reporting Act, as amended, requires Great Lakes to report this information
accurately and objectivelyWe are audited to ensure our compliance with these
requirements
Upon
receiving Mr***’s request for a credit report reassessment, we
re-evaluated his account and the data reported to ensure no errors were made
that would lead to, or result in, inaccurate delinquency reporting (such as
misapplication of payments).
Mr
***’s Stafford loan account transferred to Great Lakes for servicing on May
22, At the time of transfer, Mr***’s demographic information,
including his mailing address and phone number, were provided to Great Lakes by
his previous servicer, Direct Loan Servicing Center (DLSS/ACS)
As
of May 22, 2013, Mr***’s account was days delinquentTwo letters were
sent to the mailing address listed for Mr*** on this date: a welcome
letter and a delinquency noticeIn addition to the letters mailed to Mr
***, Great Lakes attempted to contact him by phone multiple times prior to
reporting his account as delinquent to the Consumer Reporting Agencies (CRAs)
On
June 17, 2013, Mr*** was successfully reached via the phone number listed
for his accountThe following day, Mr*** updated his mailing address and
made a payment via our website, mygreatlakes.org
While
we commend Mr*** for making a payment to bring his account current, it has
been concluded that Great Lakes’ prior credit reporting is accurate and we are
unable to remove the past adverse credit reporting from his credit history
Although
we are unable to grant Mr***’s request, Myfico.com indicates that
individuals who were delinquent in the past are able to improve their FICO
score by paying their loans on time, and the longer an individual pays on time,
the more their FICO score should increase
I
hope the information provided is helpful to Mr***If he has any questions
or concerns he may contact our Borrower Services Department at (800) 236-4300,

Dear
Mr
***:
Thank
you for contacting us on behalf of Ms*** *** and for providing us the
opportunity to address her concern in regards to the phone calls she is
receiving via her cell phone, after she has requested that Great Lakes no
longer call her cell phone
I apologize if Ms*** finds our calls
frustrating. However, it is important for
her to understand that when we contact her regarding her past due student loan,
we are trying to help.
The
federal regulations governing the Federal Family Education Loan Program (FFELP)
require that we contact borrowers after their account(s) becomes past due
Additionally, we are only required to obtain consent to call a cell phone
number when calling via an autodialing system, which we are not utilizing
during our phone attempts to Ms***
Ms
***’s account is currently $past due since August 18, If Ms

Ms***’s phone number has not recently changed, and she does not have an

Dear
Mr. [redacted]:
Thank
you for contacting us on behalf of Mr. [redacted] and for providing us the
opportunity to address his additional concerns in regard to Great Lakes’ past
credit reporting.
As
stated in our previous correspondence, Mr. [redacted]’s account was reviewed to
verify that the delinquency reported to the national Credit Reporting Agencies (CRAs)
in May, 2013 was accurate. However, we made a one-time courtesy adjustment and
instructed the following Credit Reporting Agencies (CRAs) to remove the
delinquency from his payment history: Experian,
Equifax, TransUnion and Innovis.  Hopefully
the CRAs will promptly display these changes to his credit files. Each
individual agency determines when the adjusted data will display on a
consumer’s credit file.

If
Mr. [redacted] feels there is a discrepancy with reporting that was done by DLSS/ACS,
he may wish to file a dispute with the CRAs as DLSS/ACS’ offices are now
closed. Great Lakes is not authorized to make changes to credit reporting done
by a different student loan servicer nor should our reporting overlap with the
previous servicers reporting.  Great
Lakes began reporting Mr. [redacted]’s account as of the same month we began
servicing his account, May 2013. DLSS/ACS did make arrangements and set
parameters for the handling of any disputes with the CRAs prior to closing
their office.
Mr.
[redacted]’s lender, the U.S. Department of Education, does not charge late fees. Our
records confirm that neither Great Lakes nor DLSS/ACS have assessed any late
charges to Mr. [redacted]’s account.
If Mr. [redacted] has any
additional questions or concerns, he may contact our Borrower Services
Department at ###-###-####, or by email at [redacted].
Sincerely,

[redacted]'s response:
It is true that payments were late to Directs Loans. This is because I WAS NOT CONTACTED and I WAS NOT BILLED. How can you make a payment if you have not been billed? How can you make a payment if you are not informed who to pay? I supplied proper contact information in addition to my University email to Direct Loans including: personal email, home address and phone number. It seems that Great Lakes simply adopted Direct Loans dysfunction. How is it that Great Lakes can "Adopt" the late payment history from Direct Loans? The effect is that now, BOTH Direct Loan AND Great Lakes show as late payments on my credit history even though there is only one account (mine) involved? This procedure seems analogous to being charged twice for the same crime. What happens if Great Lakes sells my loan? Will I then have three late payment history's on my credit history?
Ms. [redacted]'s assertion that I was contacted by phone and mail is incorrect. I have had the same phone number (only 1) for over two years and received no letters. My provided, personal email address has not changed in 10 years. I continue to insist that Great Lakes take responsibility for failing to contact me so that I could begin repayment. Obviously, it is in Great Lakes interest to be able to add late fees to may account. Those fees were paid and that should be enough (even though I did nothing wrong and was a good faith borrower). Ms. Latham states in her reply that I was contacted by phone after several months. Again, I have had the same phone number and always take my calls. In order to meet their responsibility as lenders, I insist meet their obligation to resolve my credit report (late payments showing) in a timely manner.
Regards,
[redacted]

Great Lakes ID: [redacted]...

Dear
Mr. [redacted]:

Thank
you for contacting us on behalf of Ms. [redacted] and for providing us
the opportunity to further address her concerns about her student loan that is
guaranteed by Great Lakes Higher Education Guaranty Corporation (Great Lakes)
and serviced by [redacted]. Her concern, as we understand it, is her
desire to regain her ability for new financial aid to return to school.

At
this point in time Ms. [redacted] remains ineligible for new financial aid because
of the default status on her student loan account.

Although
her loan(s) guaranteed by Great Lakes are in default, she is able to resolve
the default status by rehabilitating her account.  A borrower may rehabilitate a defaulted loan
by making a pre-determined number of consecutive, voluntary, on-time monthly
payments.  The rehabilitation payments
must be reasonable and affordable, but should be sufficient to satisfy the
outstanding balance on the loan within a 10-year repayment period.  The successful rehabilitation of Ms. [redacted]’
defaulted loan(s) will result in the following:

•           Removal of her student loan(s) from
default status
•           Removal of the default status from her
credit bureau report/delinquencies reported prior to default will not be
impacted.
•           After four consecutive voluntary
payments in an approved payment plan, Ms. [redacted] would regain her eligibility
for new financial aid to return to school*
•           Her eligibility for all remaining
periods of deferment or forbearance

*Although
Ms. [redacted] had made payments via Administrative Wage Garnishment from
September 23, 2008 until April 18, 2014 these payments were involuntary and
thus do not qualify her for new federal student loans.

In
order for Ms. [redacted] to find out more on the rehabilitation process she should
contact her account representative at   ###-###-####.

*
It is important for Ms. [redacted] to understand that she will remain responsible
for the collection fees should she decide to rehabilitate her loans.

We sincerely apologize for the frustration Ms.
[redacted] has experienced with the entire default process and we hope this
information will be helpful to her.  If
you require future assistance from our office, you can reach us between 8:00 am
and 4:30 pm Monday through Friday at ###-###-####, or by email at [redacted].

Sincerely,

Dear
Mr. [redacted]:

Thank
you for contacting us on behalf of Mr. [redacted] and for providing us the
opportunity to address his concern in regard to the processing of his Teacher
Loan Forgiveness (TLF) application.

I
sincerely apologize to Mr. [redacted] for
the frustration he experienced during his communications with Great Lakes. Great
Lakes takes pride in providing quality customer service and we appreciate the opportunity to
provide any necessary feedback and training.

Our records confirm that Mr. [redacted]’s TLF application was
received on June 5, 2014. Once a TLF application is received, it may take up to
six weeks for Great Lakes to review the application for eligibility and
accuracy. For loans held by the U.S. Department of Education (ED), such as Mr.
[redacted]’s, Great Lakes is required to forward TLF applications to ED for final
approval once it has been fully processed.
Despite the additional time required by ED for their approval process,
the TLF payment will be applied as of the date the application is forwarded,
provided the TLF is approved.

On June 18, 2014, Mr. [redacted]’s TLF application was
initially approved by Great Lakes  in the
amount of $17,500. Great Lakes concluded our review of Mr. [redacted]’s TLF
application on July 14, 2014, and we forwarded his application to ED for final
approval on July 17, 2014.

On September 9, 2014, we received ED’s approval of Mr.
[redacted]’s TLF application for the amount of $17,500. The forgiveness payment was
applied towards his account as of July 17, 2014 and his account now reflects as
paid in full.

Since the TLF payment was applied as of July 17, 2014,
Mr. [redacted]’s July 31, 2014 payment of $170 resulted in an overpayment of $40.98.
Therefore, he will be receiving a refund from the U.S. Treasury for that amount
within 30 to 45 days.

I
hope that Mr. [redacted] finds this information helpful and encourage him to contact

I was not entirely sure how this works but I heard Spy Stealth is good at helping people with their credit scores in all honesty I could slowly work on my score myself, but the eviction I had on my account was seriously hurting me. I was living with a room mate who's brother will be moving in by May which means I had to move. I didn’t want to live in hotels anymore I just wanted to be able to get my own place...As I speak, Spy Stealth got rid of all negative listings and eviction on my credit at a reasonable price. Thanks to him, I can’t imagine what my life would have been If I had not met him. And for those interested in his services, his email address is spystealth . org @ gmail . com.

Review: Most banking and financial institutions credit a payment on the day the payment is made, even if it takes additional days to process the monetary transfer of funds from my bank to their institution. With Great Lakes I made a payment last week. at that time, my accrued interest to date was $15. Today, I checked to see if my payment had been processed. I noticed my payment has NOT been processed and my accrued interest is now $35. This company deals with student loans. What they are doing is fraud. The payment should be credited the day it was made.Desired Settlement: Great Lakes should credit payments the day that they are made on their website or over the phone. If this change requires software of operational updates, it should be done. Other financial institution operate this way in order to protect consumers from paying unnecessary interest.

Response:

Thank you for contacting us on behalf of Ms. [redacted] and for providing us the opportunityto address her concern in regard to the processing of payments she makes through our website,mygreatlakes.org.At the present time, we service Ms. [redacted]’s Stafford loan with the U.S. Department of Education(ED). Concerning the online payment she referenced, we reviewed her account and determinedthat it appears to be either the $300 payment she scheduled on November 3, 2015 with aNovember 3, 2015 posting date, or the $100 payment she scheduled on November 6, 2015 with aposting date of November 9, 2015.First, it is important to note that payments made through mygreatlakes.org for ED held loans areprocessed through a clearinghouse (pay.gov) on behalf of the U.S. Treasury. Since pay.gov isresponsible for processing payments, there is typically a short delay between the time we receiveor are notified that a borrower’s payment has cleared and the time the payment posts to theirpayment history. In most scenarios, this delay takes approximately 2 to 3 business days from thedate the payment was scheduled to post. However, regardless of the amount of time it takes a payment to process, please be assured thatpayments are applied as of the date the payment was scheduled for. For example, Ms. [redacted]’s$300 payment was scheduled with a posting date of November 3, 2015. This payment was sent toand cleared her financial institution on November 4, 2015. Even though her payment didn’t clearher financial institution until November 4, 2015, it was posted to her account as of the date shescheduled it to be sent to her financial institution, November 3, 2015. Ms. [redacted] may confirmthis by viewing her payment history, which we have also attached for her reference, through ourwebsite. Also for Ms. [redacted]’s review, we have attached the payment confirmation messages that weresent to the message center within her mygreatlakes.org account. Please note that anytime apayment is submitted online, a confirmation detailing the amount of the payment and date it isscheduled to be processed is subsequently sent to the borrower’s message center. It appears as if Ms. [redacted]’s confusion may be stemming from the payment she submittedNovember 6, 2015, but scheduled to be posted on November 9, 2015. Since she scheduled it tobe posted on November 9, 2015, it was not sent to her financial institution until 5pm CT that day.Consequently, since her loan is a simple interest loan, meaning interest accrues daily based onthe interest rate and principal balance, the amount of interest satisfied by this payment was morethan the amount of accrued interest listed on her account as of November 6, 2015.Ms. [redacted] may be interested in enrolling in Auto Pay, Great Lakes’ automated billing service, which allows for a borrower’s monthly payments to be withdrawn from a checking or savingsaccount automatically each month on their due date. Additionally, if a borrower chooses, theyhave the ability to modify their Auto Pay settings to increase the amount they would like withdrawnon a monthly basis. Since Ms. [redacted]’s lender is ED, making payments through Auto Pay whilein repayment will allow her to take advantage of the 0.25% interest rate reduction incentive theyoffer for utilizing this method of payment. If she is interested in Auto Pay, she may enroll throughher mygreatlakes.org account by clicking “Auto Pay” under the “Payments” tab.By enrolling in Auto Pay, Ms. [redacted] could be assured that future payments would be posted toher account as of her scheduled due date regardless as to when the payment cleared herfinancial institution.I regret the frustration Ms. [redacted] experienced and hope she finds the information providedhelpful. If she has any questions or concerns she may contact our Borrower Services Departmentby phoning ###-###-####, emailing [redacted], or by mailing:

Response:

Review: I am currently still enrolled full time at school until the end of May 2014. I should not be liable for any interest incurred, due to a billing error on part of Great Lakes Higher Education Corporation. If the company was notified by my school that I was no longer full time, I would like to see proof of the communication that was provided by the school indicating my ineligibility for deferment. I recently received an auto-generated email indicating my updated enrollment information and would like confirmation that this issue has been resolved by the school already, and do not require further input from me.Desired Settlement: I would like the billing issue resolved, any interest and fees incurred should be null and void, and my deferment period reinstated to the end of May 2014. In addition the grace period should not be affected due to the result of this billing issue.

Response:

I would highly advise against doing business with Great Lakes Higher Education Corporation. This is a company that benefits from govt imposed monopoly and operates as a mutt of a loan shark operations and the DMV. Never mind that their fixed loan rates are way above the national norm--justify it by offering forbearance etc at huge cost--catering to fear of loosing your jobs etc--when it comes to ethics and problem solving they are a disgrace.
Prior to sending them a check to pay off the entire balance of 51K, I contacted GL to ensure that:
-They are aware of a final payment coming
-I know what would happen if the payment arrives before my due date
-I know what happens if my check is more than the balance I owe at that moment
-Ensure that my auto payment will not be pulling out money if have a balance of zero
After informing the rep, that my payment is on the way I was told the following answers
If payment arrives before due date
autopay will cancel immedietly, no need to cancel plus
only the right ammopunt will be accepted.
Today, GL accepted a check that included a 700 dollar overpay a day before my due date, deducted 650 dollars from autopay. When asked, I was told, we cash checks that cover ballance that can be a week old, not at the time of payment. Our autopay actually pull fund from accounts 5 pm a day before due date. And now that we owe you money it takes 4 weeks to make a refund . Never mind the incompetency, GL effectively using your money interest free for overnight, than reserve the right to keep you fund using it interest free for another 4 weeks. This is illegal GL, I know this thanks to my MBA and decades working in finance.

Review: I talked to Navient and the told me that Debt Management collection systems took my tax refund without any notice or court order and then they did not apply it to my student loans balance.when I called the number that Navient gave me and it turns out that Debt Management Collection System is actually the us department of education. ..Desired Settlement: DesiredSettlementID: Correction to a credit repair

How is one to know how to make a payment PAYABLE to if it does NOT appear after looking for an hour.
Do I use: Great Lakes Loans
Dept. of Education
Stafford Loans
OR To Whom it May Concern?
Stupid website. I want to make a payment on behalf of a STUDENT. It only took three das to identify a MASTER ACCOUNT number and, after two hours, NO LUCK finding CHECK PAYABLE TO info. No wonder our college graduates work at McDonald's. At least they can identify a hamburger.

They call me 4-5 times within a few weeks, I usually finally answer. They ALWAYS ask for contact information of the person who had my cell phone # before me (I've had this # for 6 years). Someone I have no info on. I've told them this multiple times, they've told me multiple times that they'll take me off their list. Yet the next year they call me multiple times until I answer, AGAIN, I tell them the same info, AGAIN. They aren't a scammer, but they use less than truthful tactics. They're a nuisance! I'm disappointed to see that the Dept. of Education uses this company.

Finally signed up.... And the site is unable to provide me with any account info at this time... Not cool

Review: I wet to a college and found out that it was not credited so I withdrew myself out of it and found out that even after I was not enrolled they were still taking money out for financial aid and now this company is harassing me about money that I do not feel I should have to pay and not only that they are charging me over $1700.00 in finance charges and that is just out of control crazy right there. I do not feel that I should have to pay for something that I can not use in the future if I chose to expand my education.Desired Settlement: DesiredSettlementID: Refund

settle all of my school loans that I have with this company so the debt is no longer there. I do not want to have anything to do with this if I was unable to use these credits for future use.

July 21, 2014

Review: This company is evidently a servicer for education loans. Once we figured out that the alleged charges were the result of credit fraud, we began making efforts to get the necessary documentation requested to dispute loan and put this behind us. It has now been over 2 years of back and forth and run around. During the same period our electric utility company was also taken by an individual residing at the same address used for this student loan fraud. However, after filing the required police report, providing bills showing we have not lived within a 100 miles the other address, and filling out an affidavit, the electric company put it to bed within 90 days.

Now after jumping though every conceivable hoop, their position is that we have not done enough and we need to go hire a "certified handwriting analyst" - at our own expense - to prove I did not sign the loan agreement. I can guarantee you that they didn't spend 10 seconds analyzing these signatures, because the signer did not even use my actual name, it was misspelled!

My 10 year old and I looked at the signatures provided (finally, it’s taken 2 years just to get something in writing from the original paperwork) and can easily see at least 4 discrepancies between the signatures – not including the fact that the thief misspelled my name! It doesn’t begin to rise to the level of needing a professional handwriting analyst.

I am thinking that Great Lakes is just being obtuse because they have someone they can harass into paying them something. They know if they did the right thing and gave more than lip service to the “required” efforts to correct credit fraud, they will probably wind up writing off the bad debt.Desired Settlement: Remove me from the obligated party, leave me alone, and go after prosecuting the criminal whose address they have!
