Customer notified us on 8/regarding receiving the incorrect productRather than us sending out the correct product, the customer asked to return the product and get a full refund. We notified the supplier of the issue and received notification from them on 9/that they issued a
refund and advised the customer could keep the incorrect productWe notified the customer and issued the refund to the card used in the transaction on 9/Because the credit is issued to a credit card it may take a few days for it to show up on their statementWe communicated this to the customer via e-mail on 9/

He personally contacted the customer to apologize for the error and offer the customer a compromise solution.  School Outfitters agreed to sell the product to the customer at a significantly discounted rate, that is well below our normal selling price.  The customer was not satisfied with this solution, but we felt that this was a reasonable concession to make for the very unusual mistake.
