she did not include a tax document (1099-MISC) regarding a cashed-in IRA from Schwab. Prior to beginning the preparation of her 2014 tax return, our accountant asked [redacted] to confirm that all relevant 2014 tax documents had been provided, which [redacted] verified. To our accountant’s knowledge, there was no IRA income to report for 2014. Additionally, [redacted] had ample opportunity to review her 2014 tax return. It was only submitted to the IRS following [redacted]s approval.Further investigation revealed that, in 2013—a year prior to engaging Greenback for assistance with her 2014 tax return, [redacted] sent a non-specific Schwab statement (with no details as to what it was in reference to—IRA rollover vs. transfer, etc.). This is the document that [redacted] mentions was received by Greenback. To report income, a 1099 would have been required, and such documentation was never provided by [redacted] at any point in time.Greenback Expat Tax Services prepares thousands of tax returns each year, and if an error does arise, we are absolutely committed to making the situation right. It is Greenback’s belief that no error was made in this case; [redacted]s return was prepared accurately based on the information she provided at the time of her 2014 tax interview and collection of supporting documentation.Despite this error not being our fault, we did everything we could on our end to help abate these penalties for our client- including writing a letter to the IRS requesting leniency.
