This contractor installed a roof that leaked from day one. We didn't realize how bad until just recently. We have had to replace the entire roof. It is a metal roof that is supposed to have a lifetime warranty and it's only 9 years old. Also, our plumbing is not properly vented and the bathroom fans are not vented correctly. Our Steam shower fan should vent to the outside but it does not.

Well, I was completely caught off guard by all of this. It has been 10 years since the roof was installed and although I was aware of a leak early on, I haven't heard anything about it in at lease 4-5 years. I initially had the roofing company, who issued the warranty directly to the client, come out and work on the problem 10 years ago. My client told me that she would handle any further problems directly with them. When I did hear back about 5 years ago, I as told that there was a discoloration problem and was asked if I knew who manufactured the panels, as the roofing company had apparently gone out of business. I offered to come out and remove a few panels to try to find something to identify the manufacturer. I did, but we were unable to find anything. At that point, I again offered to try to help in any way, but was told again that she would handle it. That is the last correspondence we had before this complaint was filed. When I found out about the complaint, I again offered to come out, this time to see if we could figure out why it was leaking, but was told that the roof was already being replaced.

Regarding the steam bath vent, this complaint was the first time I have heard anything about it. I honestly do not remember how it was vented as it was over a decade and hundreds of projects ago.

The same is true for the plumbing vents. I have never heard that there was a problem and furthermore, tying them together is an accepted practice to reduce roof penetrations and therefore potential leaks. It was also requested by the architect.

We do good work and stand behind everything we do, but in this case for some reason, we were never made aware of, or given an opportunity to remedy anything.

Complaint: ***

I am rejecting this response because: It is an accurate account of what transpired
We never knew the roofer or laid eyes on him. We did not know the ceiling was still leaking until three years after the remodel was completed. I never discussed the roof with him and I certainly did not receive a warranty from him. That is completely false.

If we had a warranty, *** would not have needed to look under the roofing panels for the name of the manufacturer. We only thought to pursue the discoloration issue as a last ditch chance of having the roof replaced without having to spend another forty thousand. We had someone look at repairing the roof. However, because it was improperly installed, they could not guarantee their work even if the leaks were found and repaired. We told *** all of this information the day he came to the house. We showed him the water stains in the living room and hallway. He knew the roof was leaking.

I have also included an unpleasant email exchange initiated by *** with a few redactions. He acknowledges in this email that he came to the house several times. I only remember the one time but my point is, he came to the house to look at the roof because it was leaking and he states this in his first email.

He then emails again two days later and suddenly wants to fix the roof and acts like he knew nothing about the leak even though his email from two days earlier says otherwise. I think the Revdex.com had contacted him at this point though he denies it. We would never let *** work on our house again nor would I recommend him to anyone as a contractor.

I don’t know what else to say. We gave him every opportunity to fix the roof but he just blew us off. If he really cared about the quality of his work and his reputation, he would have fixed the roof. Instead, here we are ten years later, replacing a roof, chimney, some drywall, insulation and ductwork and tying up a few loose ends. It is a huge disappointment to say the least.

The pictures included show the email exchange, the chimney before and during replacement, some of the drywall damage, the steam shower fan’s location, and the way the bathrooms were supposed to be vented per the architect’s plans.

Regards

I cannot see any of the photographs the says are included, so I cannot address them.

I submit that there has been no direct communication regarding the roof since October of 2014. That communication is attached. I would have gladly remedied the problem had it ever been brought to my attention that it continued. Also attached is the final exchange between us prior to the week this complaint was filed.
