Revdex.com: I have reviewed the response made by the business in reference to complaint ID [redacted] , and have determined that this proposed action would not resolve my complaint [Provide details of why you are not satisfied with this resolution.] Both my son and daughter in law were kept in Emily [redacted] 's office for HOURS, given photos of before & after pictures for cosmetic procedures and even offered Botox Neither of them were offered regular cleanings at any point When I called them to discuss my dissatisfaction, after my son and daughter in law had already left, they made an offer to ME that my son could come back and they would do a cleaning on his teeth There are many very similar complaints on the internet about this office being nothing more than a scam to lure people in so they can be offered services they do not need, overcharged and also be told they have more problems than they actually haveI should have simply read the internet before sending them in For example, here are [redacted] and yahoo - a couple of sites they cannot control: http://www.***.com/biz/emily-e- [redacted] -dds-spring and https://local.yahoo.com/info-19116811- [redacted] -emily-e-dds- [redacted] -emily-e-dds-spring One lady even reviewed that she went in on the "special" and then was charged extra for the "normal" cleaning Some special offer Also, they were told they have cavities they don't have My son went to a very respected dentist in the area just a few days later and had a cleaning, was told he doesn't need deep cleanings or have several cavitiesAnd also, he wasn't insulted by being told he needs cosmetic procedures to improve his appearance I do not retract my complaint I believe this office sets out to take advantage of people Regards, [redacted] ***

In dentistry, there are basically two types of teeth cleaning. The first is what we call the regular
cleaning, or prophy, and is performed above the gum line, typically when the
gums are healthy. The second type of
cleaning is what is referred to as a Scaling and Root Planing (SRP) or
deep
cleaning, which is performed both above and below the gum line in the presence
of periodontal or gum disease. It is a
much more extensive cleaning, requiring more time to perform, and sometimes
requiring anesthetic, depending on the patient’s pain tolerance. Additionally, in our office, after the deep
cleaning we treat the cleaned pockets in the gums with a diode laser to
eliminate all sources of bacteria causing the periodontal disease, which helps
ensure a better long-term outcome for the patient. Because of all of this, a deep cleaning is a
much more expensive procedure than a regular cleaning Without the deep cleaning, the periodontal
disease will only escalate in severity over time. Failure to treat the periodontal disease means
the patient will experience halitosis (bad breath) and the condition eventually
leads to bone loss and tooth loss. Periodontal
disease is also contagious and can be passed from one spouse to another through
kissing. Scientific studies have also
shown that periodontal disease is related to an increased risk of heart attack,
stroke, diabetes, pre-term labor, low birth weight as well as other conditions.
As dental health professionals, part of our job is to diagnose
conditions in the patient’s mouth and recommend optimal care for the patient to
treat any conditions that are foundAs such, we believe it would be unethical NOT
to recommend the deep cleaning to a patient that has gum disease, since
anything less would be considered sub-optimal care. Not
recommending a deep cleaning to a patient with gum disease would be like a medical
doctor not recommending anti-hypertensive medication to a patient with high
blood pressure In our opinion, it is just
unethical to do so and not good practice.
The cost is irrelevant to the recommendation. It is still the patient’s choice to accept or
decline the recommendation. If they
decline the recommendation of a deep cleaning, we will only perform a regular cleaning on the
patient if they sign a release stating that they are declining the
recommendation and are aware of the risks of not treating the gum disease
Ms***’s son and daughter-in-law visited our office as new
patients on 5/21/to receive exams and cleanings for their teeth. As part of their comprehensive examination, the
patients were evaluated by both a dental hygienist and dentist for tooth decay
and tooth fractures, and periodontal (gum) disease using x-rays, intra-oral
photographs, the Diagnodent laser cavity detection system, and gum measurements. Oral cancer screenings were also performed by
the dentist. As part of the
comprehensive examination, the patients were also informed about cosmetic
procedures that could improve the aesthetics of their smile. Results of the comprehensive examination,
including x-rays, photographs, gum measurements, clinical notes, etcare part
of the patient’s electronic medical record that we keep on our secure office
server Periodontal disease was diagnosed in both the son and his
wife. During the examination, the wife verbally informed us that
she had previously been diagnosed and treated for periodontal disease in
another office and we included that information in the patient’s clinical
notes. I am unable to provide supporting documents because HIPAA regulations do not allow us
to share medical records with the Revdex.com unless the patient provides consent for us
to do so. Since
the patients are both adults, the mother cannot provide consent for us to share
the medical records with the Revdex.com either.
The son has signed a HIPAA consent for us to share his medical records
with his mother, but that does not give us permission to share his records with
the Revdex.com. The daughter-in-law did not
sign a consent form, so I am unable to share her records with either the Revdex.com
or Ms***.
Because gum disease was diagnosed in both the
son and daughter-in-law, we recommended the deep cleaning for both
patients. They both refused this
recommended treatment. Ms***’s daughter-in-law did not sign the
release form so there was no additional treatment for us to do at this time. Her son did sign the form, but left our
office at his mother’s request before we could perform a cleaning. However, the comprehensive examinations,
involving a doctor and hygienist, were performed on both patients before they
left the office
In the $special, there is a clear disclaimer in the
advertisement that states the offer is only good in the absence of periodontal
disease. Many different dental offices
offer a similar New Patient Special with the same disclaimer. Without the special, a comprehensive examination
would cost up to $318, depending on the number and types of x-rays taken. For her son, the regular fees for his visit,
even without the cleaning, would have been $since he received a
comprehensive examination, digital x-rays, and a digital panograph. For the daughter-in-law, the regular fees
would have been $since she received a comprehensive examination and digital
x-rays, but not the digital panograph. The
standard fees for a regular cleaning, if performed, would have been an
additional $89. So even though her son
and daughter-in-law did not qualify for the special because of the presence of
periodontal disease, we decided to honor the $each for just the
comprehensive examinations and x-rays, which was a savings of $versus what
the standard fees would have been for those services.
Regardless of the fees, we are still concerned about the
oral health of her son and daughter-in-law.
If Ms*** will come to our office, we would be happy to show her the
x-rays and results of our examination on her son to show her that the
periodontal disease is real and needs to be addressed sooner rather than
later. Unfortunately, we would not be
able to show her the records for her daughter-in-law because we were not given
consent to do so. We would hate for this
disease to go untreated long term and impact the quality of their smiles and
possibly their overall health
Our dental hygienists have between and 20+ years of experience
in diagnosing and treating cases of gum disease and both of our doctors have
over twenty years each in diagnosing and treating thousands of patients with
gum disease Our doctor and hygienists stand
behind their diagnoses We are not responsible for the dental hygiene that
patients practice in their home We do
not put gum disease in our patient’s mouthWe are not there to see how
patients take care of their teeth on a daily basis. When patients come to our office, as dental
professionals we are obligated to do our best to identify problems that could
negatively impact their oral health and potentially their overall health. Doing that may make some patients
uncomfortable if they hear something that they do not like and it may result in
a diagnosis and treatment that is expensive.
It does not make us wrong or dishonest.
We are just doing our job the best we can. It is up to the patient to decide whether
they want to proceed with the treatment that we recommend
Even though Ms*** feels that her son and daughter-in-law
did not receive anything for their visit and for the $spent, they actually
received comprehensive examinations with x-rays performed by both a dental
hygienist and a dentist These services
were provided at a significantly discounted rate below our standard fees. Again, we welcome Ms*** to come to the
office so that we can show her the results of the examination and the presence
of periodontal disease in her son’s mouth
