Grey Heron Construction, Inc. Reviews (1)

We bought a house from Grey Heron Construction in October 2011. Recently the snow storms we had blew snow in the ridge vent and ruined the drywall on the ceiling. We also had some water damage in the walls. A lot of the insulation in the ceiling also has to be replaced. I spent at least 4 hours in the attic pulling out wet insulation and drying the ceiling to prevent further damage. I had 2 trash bags full of went insulation and clumps of snow the size of grapefruits. The owner of Grey Heron Construction, [redacted], said that this was normal and we should check our attic after every snowfall. He also said his lawyer told him he didn't have to cover any of the damage. Our insurance company will not cover the damage to the roof because they said it was due to "poor construction".Product_Or_Service: HomeDesired SettlementAt this point the damage to our home excluding the roof repair was estimated at $1800. To repair the roof will be approximately another $500. At this point we obviously don't want Grey Heron Construction doing any more work to our house based on what they did initially and their attitude towards the situation. We would like them to pay for the total amount of damages, $2300.Consumer Response [redacted], the owner of Grey Heron Construction, obviously doesn't understand that you build a business by standing behind your products not by hiding behind lawyers and technicalities. A roof leaking after two years is not an "act of God" it is poor workmanship according to 2 insurance adjusters that looked at the damage to my home. Admittedly he built additional homes in the same neighborhood with the same issue. It was obvious to me when I spoke to [redacted] over the phone that he was not interested in helping when the first words out of his mouth were "my lawyer said I'm not liable..". I took one business law class in college and the overall test of fault always came down to the same common denominator. What would be considered reasonable? In this case would ANY home owner consider it reasonable for snow to be in the attic under any circumstances? I think the obvious answer is no. This is plainly a case of a builder and his sub-contractor trying to avoid taking responsibility for their poor quality work. At this point I will need to have my attorney handle this issue.Business Response In response to complaint against Grey Heron Construction's poor construction,This Roof along with the entire house was built to NC building codes,House was inspected many diff times at different stages of construction by a County official(inspector). One of these being the exterior inspection, this is specifically to inspect all flashing and penetrations to the exterior of the home, including the roof. other counties do not have this inspection, [redacted] County does. The complaint against the roof leaking seems to be a direct result of WIND DRIVEN SNOW(moisture). This is something that is out of the hands of the Builder and the Roofer the buyer and any Inspector. This home is one of many in the area that had leaks due to this same snow storm. One of the Model homes there in the same community, [redacted] had the same leaks. This was Grey Heron's Property at the time and was monitored daily, in the same way [redacted] had to monitor his.As the property owner I knew this wasn't covered by insurance and therefore It was my responsibility as the owner of the property, I had to look over it. Knowing this isn't covered by Insurance, I watched it very closely. Think the term is Act of God??? [redacted], [redacted]'s girlfriend called me late one evening and I being the builder tried to figure out what it was there on the phone with her.I called [redacted] back the next day and scheduled my superintendent to visit and review the problem. After reviewing it was apparent that it was wind driven.I then told [redacted] that I felt as though this wasn't my responsibility, BUT I would help him with the subs to do the work at my cost. In an effort to save him some money. This wasn't good enough for [redacted]. He then called my Roofer and cursed his secretary out(happens to be his mother), he was told the same thing by the roofer. After being told this he then called me and tried to tell me that the house was built incorrectly. Mainly the roof. He said the air gap under the ridge vent(required by NC building codes) was too larger and in turn letting in to much moisture in to the attic space. This is not something I can change because [redacted] thinks it should be. This is a code that all builders must follow if they want to use ridge vent in this portion of the state, if not the entire state. Please accept this as my formal and final response to [redacted]'s complaint. I have consulted with my Lawyer due to [redacted]'s offensive comments. It's also my understanding that [redacted] has said many things to damage my reputation on the internet and inside the community. This also needs to be NOTED! Thank you,[redacted] Business Response I have offered to help him by giving him the subcontractors to fix his issues at my builder price. This offer along with any to assist in the correction of his issue has been removed due to the slander and offensive comments he has made. Grey Heron Const. offers a standard 12 month builder warranty just like the rest of NC general contractors. Please understand at this point I am not willing to help [redacted] with his issue because, it's not a warranty issue and BECAUSE OF HIS COMMENTS TO ME AND MY ROOFING COMPANY. thank you, [redacted] Grey Heron Construction, Inc.
